Hello all.

The Brighton Half Marathon was my first HM and my first proper race as well! I can't express how much I enjoyed it even though my heart sunk when I saw the 11 mile marker and thought it would have been 12 or 13!!!

The weather couldn't have been better and made the setting even more impressive, it was even hot at one point. Race start was 9.30 and my pen set off about 9.40. It took about a mile before I could open up the afterburners....I mean get to my normal plod..... and the crowd started to space out, then we headed off the seafront and headed north, great crowds here and they really did give me a boost. The course did narrow a bit here so I had to pay more attention to feet and other runners, but as we got back down to the pier and headed towards the Marina the road widened out considerably and some space emerged so I started to feel like I was running my normal race.

Mrs KRunning was waiting for me at about half way and we managed to perform a reasonably cool-looking high five as I ran past.

At about 10miles I started to pay less attention to what was going on around me and started to concentrate on finishing in a good time, I was with the 2.15 pace marker at this point and my previous PB (non-race) was 2hr.16m, so I thought a PB may be on.

11 mile marker was where I started to find it hard. I didn't feel particularly fatigued and my form was reasonably good, I just thought I had gone past the 11m marker and this was 12 at least so I was slightly deflated. I then saw the course in front of me and the runners doubling back in the distance to head towards the finishing straight. Things started to feel a bit harder so I had a word with myself and then a supporter on the side had a sign up. "Free Random High 5's", I got one and that seemed to give me a boost.

Finish Time - 2hr 14min. Loved every minute of it, so much so that as I sat on the bus back to the Park & Ride (which was the only painful part of the day), I signed up for next year.........

Picture of bling in the comments. Thank you all for your support, on to the next one.

great race report - I know, because I was there! It was my first HM too and same starting pen!

Weren't we lucky with the sun, though actually I would have been okay with some cooling drizzle about the time we approached Roedean πŸ˜‚. It was about mile ten that I started to feel down- that section where we'd gone past the start and out into bleakest Hove. It felt like the longest section of all and no clue how far away the turn was to join the runners in the other direction! Thank god for that cheery random high five lady πŸ₯°.

Well done on your time, and hope you are enjoying some refuelling and rest now!

PS Do you remember that red inflatable arch over the route about a km BEFORE the finish line? Everyone I was with (including me) thought it was the finish line and it felt so cruel that it wasn't πŸ₯²

YES!!!! I have to admit that I swore when I realised there was still a bit more to do. Hope you had a great race and I agree looking over to the seafront and seeing the route snaking round yet again was a challenge to my motivation! Maybe see you again next year Runnf

Great work IR; good weather and a PB, what more could you ask for? Oh, there’s the bling of course! A remarkable first HM race, in fact you first race of any sort; you brought it all together really well. Lots of calories lost there; good food required and maybe a glass of something nice to celebrate. A day to remember !! πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
