... and just like that, we move to the first chat of the year!
Itβs another short one as we get everything back to normal after the festive period. I don't know about anyone else, but I love those few days between the demands of Christmas and New Year's eve/day; they tend to be pretty laid back in our house.
I'm now itching to remove the Christmas paraphernalia and clear away, ready for a fresh new start. I'm not sure what will be different, but it's a good opportunity to reflect on goals and achievements ... a bit like renewing wedding vows perhapsπ My main running goal for 2024 will be to try to run a marathon; but just that, not how or where or when, just to run a marathon (after training properly for it this time). There. I've said it π
There is one thing that will be a little different this year; Cmoi has decided to leave the admin team after helping out for a significant amount of time now. IP and I are both enormously grateful for all the time, effort and support that she has given both us and our forum members, and we're sure you join us in wishing her all the best in her running and life adventures in general.
Remember, this is your chat, so please pop in and out over the coming week to share your news and any new year running resolutions/goals you may make; or indeed pop in just to check out what everyone else is up to π₯°
We wish every one of you all the very best for this New Year; may it be peaceful and happy, and full of running adventures. May all your hopes and dreams come to fruition π
With love from The Team xxx

π½ Do you have a race/event in January? Would you like a pompom cheer? If so, then head here to give us the details:
π Have you run a new distance? 10 miles, Half Marathon, Metric Marathon (26.2K), Marathon, Ultra (50K and beyond). You can claim a shiny new badge by going here:
I'm so envious of everyone running today. I almost wish I hadn't gone out yesterday now π Great goals for this year and I am absolutely certain you will achieve them both, and some!
Happy New Year Linda and all admins and runners. Thanks for all of the weekly chats you have led Cmoi ; it isnβt easy I know having had the honour once! linda9389 and Irishprincess , you are both due an injury free year β¦.and a Marathon Linda?β¦of course you can do it; we just need IC to leave you alone for long enough!
The sun is shining here, the rain has stopped, the wind has dropped and it is 7c. Must be a New Year run morning.π
Indeed BC! You are so right, the only thing that will stand between me and a marathon this year will be the injury couch. The IC and I hope to keep a healthy distance; if I could, I'd have a restraining order put on it!!!
I am so envious of these NYD runs, but having run yesterday (mindful of the above para), I will wait 'til tomorrow π. Hope you have a great one π
The sun did shine Dexy5 thanks. Happy New Year to you and UTS. Mrs BC is sporting a very black eye after have fall down the stairs last week. Hope that 2024 is incident free for this household!π
She has had a clear CT scan, so hopefully that is the limit of the damage; the bruising has continued to develop. Will try to persuade her to go to the surgery today. Helpfully it is our morning for a weekly chat with our medic friend in Australia, so he will no doubt have a view when he sees her.
Happy New Year to everyone. As Iβm still on the sickness couch I will write for all those unable to run at the moment because of ill health or injury, and to borrow from Falstaff (TMWofW), I wish I could take all our troubles βand give them to a dog for a New Yearβs giftβ. (A metaphorical canine of course !). And for those making New Yearβs Resolutions here is Cassius (Julius Caesar), βI am fresh of spirit and resolved to meet all perils very constantlyβ. If you are still partying then βI drink to the general joy oβthe whole tableβ (Macbeth) and to all I wish you βjoy gentle friends! Joy and fresh days of love accompany your hearts!β (AMND).
Happy new year to all here! I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.
Cmoi Youβve done an amazing job as admin. Your admin contributions to the forum have been insightful, helpful and consistent and will be missed. I especially love your self deprecating sense of humour and honesty. I hope this doesnβt mean weβll be seeing less of you though!
Personally Iβll be clinging on to the thought that Iβll be in a position to defend my UK title this year. My more ambitious hope is to attend the world championships in August. Iβm still unable to train on the track but Iβm hoping to get it resolved soon.
Hi Brian; a frustrating start to the New Year for you, but π€you will be right come race season. In the meantime you have an amazing 2023 to look back on.
If there is any fairness in this world, resolution must be close Brian - you have worked so hard as always. Stay positive and focus on those goals. You'll have your day again ... hopefully a nice bright one in August π
Iβve been injured since the middle of October. π’ Ankle problem that wonβt go away. Iβve been waiting patiently on the NHS but sadly there is still no sign of an appointment for a scan. I will be going privately this month I hope. Need to get back to the track to continue speed work there. Gym has been fun and kept me strong in the meantime but Iβm aware that my speed and speed endurance will be lacking and the longer I leave it, the worse it will be. My patience has finally run out and I will get to the bottom of it this month!
I hope you and UTS have a successful and happy 2024.
Oh no Brian, I can understand your impatience. I ended up taking the private route for my rotator cuff injury. The trouble is, thatβs also becoming slower as a result of the demand. Good luck to you. Getting the scan done is key to you getting the right treatment and rehabilitation. Happy injury free new year to you.
Happy New Year Linda and all. I took my decorations down yesterday π then sat up late watching a film, fireworks with neighbour who raised his eyebrows when I opened all the windows to let the old year out and the new year in. We will miss Cmoi on the admin team but hopefully she'll stay around here.
I don't want to renew my wedding vows thanks, 39 years with an alcoholic was long enough, 10 with Willow no where near long enough .
My goal for this year is to run a half Marathon π
You have permission to just renew your running vows Sue! I'm sure there have been some difficult moments through this festive season, but your strength has shone through. Hope 2024 is especially kind to you π₯°
Thank you Linda, at the moment I'm walking, at least half hour a day, have added press ups to my squats so I'm sure my comeback to running will be fun π.This New Year feels significant and so far it's good π
Aww that's lovely of you to say so Linda, I feel very ordinary , I'll have my eye op in 9 days hence the walking, I'm hoping it'll be a habit by then so I'll keep walking while I can't run, then it'll be easier to start running again, I'm still coughing a bit but not so chesty, π
A Half Marathon; brilliant! I will be resuming my NRC HM plan as soon as I get back up to 10k ( I got to 15k and required physio; then the mud descended!!). I just did 3 of the 5 runs per week and ran 30 seconds per lap slower than my best 10 mile pace on long runs; it worked! You will enjoy it!
Happy new year Linda! All the best for the new running year. Itβs a mouth-watering prospect isnβt it π Hopefully those currently unable to run will soon be back out there π
Iβve not cleared away the detritus yet as the family only departed yesterday afternoon so Iβve not begun the clean up. Laundry first π
Iβve only got one race pencilled in for March. The event I fancied for Feb just seems so hard I canβt really face it because my psoriasis is so bad. My ever-helpful husband got me some Adidas βhip hopβ pants but theyβre too short (even for me) I looked like an oompa loompa ππ Iβve not ruled it out but am uncharacteristically talking myself out of it π
To avoid further domestic drudgery Iβm off out for my first run of 2024 πββοΈ
For anyone else running today, have a good one ππππββοΈπββοΈ
Oops I nearly forgot π‘ Thank you Cmoi for all your hard work in keeping the boards refreshed and interesting. Your running in the French mountains always made me want to visit β πββοΈ
I simply cannot visualise you as an oompah loompah Miss W πππ
What a shame that you don't feel positive about the Feb event just now - the psoriasis must really be wearing you down π’ Hang in there, hopefully it will begin to improve and lift your spirits. In the meantime, enjoy your first run of the year and hopefully set a happier tone π
Happy New Year to all... First day of Red January done... 15 minutes YWA and then a 40 minute strength work out... ! Okay.. rest time now!
Gearing up for some Red January runs to get me in trim for the Monsal Trail 10K in April! It has forecast rain, every day from today onward...looks like I could get damp!
Ooh, you're all fired up there OF! I'm going to try YWA Flow this month (at east til we go away); I have always felt the difference when I do daily YWA, but think I need to set a reminder in my calendar as it's so long since I did any yoga! We too have a very damp forecast going forward, but it'll be great practice for you - should it rain for the 10k you won't be in the least bit fazed by it!!! π
The 10K turn around is just at the beginning of the first tunnel...the GM goes through both...they are a tad eerie, but with runners in them not so bad...I've walked and cycled through too, many times.. cold and scary...no lights on!!!
I've been walking through some serious mud since getting home; with my new wellies (Christmas pressie) it's almost a joy! I won't be running through it though, not a chance!
Boots from Santa! I would have had to recite Emile Victor Rieuβs Hippopotamusβs Birthday! Jill always told me off for reciting it, because it made her cry!
As it happens, I too received a pair of boots for Christmas in the form of an RNLI planter. It is a garden reminder of Jill; her name is (amongst many others) on the number of the new Whitby Life Boat. She would have approved of the boat and the boots..but not the poem, beautifully written or not! π
Happy New Year Β linda9389 , Β Irishprincess and Β Cmoi , and thank you for all the time and effort you have given to the forum over the year. I hope you will still be posting those tales of running through the woods, avoiding huntsmen, and scaling mountains Cmoi - so different to anything that I can do.
I donβt think Iβll be changing much over the next year as it is working for me with 3 runs a week. I need to get the long run back to 10k again though (weather and Christmas preps have got in the way a bit).
And a happy new year to all forumites π₯³π₯πΎ
Things can get a bit bumpy at this time of year can't they; I imagine you've had more than your share of wind and rain to contend with there on the coast too. I'm sure you'll be back at 10k before you know it, and I totally agree - if it' ain't broke, it don't need fixing!!!
Hi linda9389 , Happy New Year to you and all my VRBs .Sorry to hear Cmoi has left your team π’ she has been brilliant. I hope she will still be here to tell us of her adventures xxx
Well I'm attempting Red January, only my 2nd time and the last one probably 5 years ago. Managed parkrun this morning and legs didn't feel so bad, we shall see! Need to train for my 10miler,its in just under 5weeks !
Pouring down here atm, but cosy and warm inside. Feeling tired after mulled wine at the Steam Train event I took my Dad to this afternoon! Lightweight! So a quiet night in now.
Hope everyone has a good start to the year xxx ππββοΈπββοΈπͺ
Slunds like you've had a lovely start to the new year. Lots of respect for REDers ?especially those who repeat it!) - good luck. It will certainly build you up for that 10 miler. You've got this!
Thanks linda9389 Had to do a walk not run last night as back bit sore after chiropractor but still got out while dinner in oven! Trail run tonight!πxxx
Love this linda9389 you go and get that Marathon. As you know, it's such an adventure training and completing one and a fabulous goal to have. You really deserve the achievement again β As for Cmoi I'll always be grateful for her humour, support and kindness π and wish her well π
I didn't really het to train for my one and only marathon to date, so am hoping this time will feel like a real achievement. I don't have enough confidence in staying injury free, but we'll see. I'm taking a very cautious approach to training and will take out insurance if I enter an event πWe'll all miss cmoi, but I hope she will pop in and keep us updated on her running adventures π₯°
Just popped over to wish you all a very happy new year and send best wishes to Cmoi and thank her for all her help and support. A big Pom Pom cheer to herπͺ πͺ ππ₯°xx
Linda your marathon awaits β¦β¦.you will do it Iβm sureπββοΈπββοΈxx
Happy New Year Linda and all. And thank you Cmoi , youβve been brilliant, I hope you still chat as weβll miss you too much otherwise π€
Iβm just chipping in before I go for my 2nd 5k of RED Jan. Itβll be my first heart rate based run so will be very frustrating, Iβm hoping it will make a difference if I just do it for January, I havenβt got the patience to do it any other time.
My goals? Iβve no idea really! Just keep on keeping on. Iβve got lots booked, and Katnap and I will be staying in a lot of Premier Inn rooms over the coming months! I want to keep being able to do HMs without having to train much, then I can work out the speed bit. Iβd also like to drag my 5k time back down as itβs still suffering from marathon training. There you go, a few goals!
Right, I need to get up. Last day off before going back to workβ¦yayβ¦
Another REDer! You have a lot going on there TC - no surprise though π A month of low heart rate training? Well that will no doubt be a real challenge (frustration) for you. Wishing you bon courage with all your goals, do let us know how it's going.
Thanks Linda. Yes, you know I canβt resist a challenge! I went out this morning but I hadnβt set my watch properly so it didnβt warn meβ¦ah well, I was getting soaked anyway so it was better being a bit quicker. Judging by todayβs rainfall, I may need a snorkel more than a heart rate monitor tomorrow.
Happy New Year to everyone! Letβs make our running dreams come true this year π
Linda, thatβs a great goal and with what youβve been achieving in recent months I have every confidence that youβll do it. I know what you mean about the injury thing though as Iβm the same and every time I start a new goal I feel a potential injury kicking at my heels.
But what these recent months have taught me about injury is that Iβm now super-careful and super-sensitive and will nip any niggle in the bud early rather than carrying on which Iβve done before!
Our year hasn't got off to the best start as our boiler gave up on New Years Eve so we have no heating or much hot water. Thank goodness we have a wood burner and itβs not that cold outside so weβre fine. The chap comes out this pm and, hopefully, heβll fix it π€
Running-wise, - whisper it as I donβt want it jinxed again - I started a new HM Plan yesterday. Iβm taking one run and one week at a time. Iβm also going to use the stationary bike for my cross training and it starts today!
Good luck with the training Linda and to everyone else with your goals. We CAN and WILL do this!!!
Kicking at your heels, waiting in the wings, round the next corner ... injury potential is everywhere in my world it seems π The cross training is such a good idea. I'm going to try the YWA daily yoga for this month and see how that goes. I'm following the NRC plan too, but have slightly changed my approach which I am hoping will help keep injury at bay - we'll see! We're all behind you with the HM plan; maybe I shouldn't jinx it by asking if you have a specific event in mind ... π₯°
Hi Linda, Happy New Year to you and all VRBs on here. I haven't been very active on here just lately, leading up to Christmas, work and both my health and my partners' health issues dominated all my time.
As you may remember my health hasn't been too good over the last few months, but now I've had most of my hospital procedures, and 1 more month left of treatment . My goals for 2024 is to get back my fitness to tackle my second half marathon in April and then in May, I'm signed up to do the Welsh 3 peaks, 24 hr challenge and I want to be at top fitness to do that.
I challenged myself to run 10.5 miles yesterday and although it was tough, I did it, so I know Im getting there. This year I would like an injury free year π€.
Linda, Im in awe, a goal of running a marathon, just wow!!
Good to hear from you HH! I'm sorry to hear your partner has also had health issues, and hope he is getting better. I've seen your runs on strava and was wondering how you were doing - still getting out there at least, and for some great distances at that. Well done, determination right there. You definitely deserve an injury free 2024 and, with so many events to smash, I very much hope you get your wish π
