This is my second time of writing the post as first time around I lost the whole thing when I tried to add the photo ๐คฌ I'm afraid it's a pretty light hearted post from me, but you can make up for that by letting us know how things are going for you in the comments below ๐ฅฐ
(First though, a big thank you to GTFC and Tasha99 for last week's great chat post.)
A funny (peculiar, not amusing) thing happened to me at the end of the Great South Run last weekend: I got pretty sweaty in the final stage of the race (that'll be down to my 'sprint' finish ๐ ) and as I made my way from the finish line to the massage tent (yes, a fifteen minute free post-race calf massage, absolute heaven) my eyes began to water - badly! And sting - badly!
By the time I got to the sign in desk I could hardly see, and my eyes were both smarting and streaming. I was less than honest when the girl behind the computer asked if I'd read everything on her consent card (in truth I could barely see the A4 card, let alone read the writing!).
Stumbling to the seats in the waiting area, I furiously dabbed away at my eyes with the balled up tissue I'd carried for 10 miles ๐ญ. I was extremely glad when I was finally lay face down on the massage bed. Never before have I had such an extreme reaction to sweat in my eyes!
It was only when I got home that I began to put two and two together. My daughter's friend has just trained to be a lash tech (for those who don't know, a lash tech spends hours painstakingly gluing individual false lashes to individual real lashes, all in the name of beauty!) and I had volunteered to be an aged guinea pig for her๐ .
Just prior to the GSR I had been for my third visit to her; the first two sets had fallen out way too fast and the poor girl was mortified that she had done something wrong. She had bought new glue and new lashes to try to finally get mine right.
Well, with hindsight it would seem that the combination of heat and sweat and salt is reactivating the glue, causing the lashes to fall off prematurely - it was most likely glue/glue fumes in my eyes that I was reacting to, rather than the sweat itself. Who knew false eyelashes could be so dangerous ๐ฑ Looking back I lost the first set around the time of the New Forest 10k and the second set after running in the heat in Santorini, though thankfully without the streaming eyes!
No real harm done, but one thing's for sure - it won't be the running I give up๐ ; the poor girl will have to find another aged guinea pig I'm afraid, but at least her skills are no longer being called into question!
So, we talk a lot about what running gives us, but has running ever stopped you from doing anything? Let us know in the comments.
Wishing everyone a good week and we look forward to reading all your news below (as well as anything you've discovered is best avoided by runners).
Let this week's chatter commence ๐

Good morning from Sydney, where I am waiting for the flight to Ayers Rock. We arrived here on Friday to blue skies, sunshine and 25c. Blissful! It has been a very busy weekend, but I made North Sydney parkrun on Saturday morning despite a lack of sleep, stiff hips from sitting for hours on the plane and dehydration. Rubbish time, but I did it ๐ Iโm not sure how much running Iโll manage while weโre here as weโre touring and moving on every other day, although Iโm targeting another 3 parkruns, but we did walk 10 miles round Sydney on Saturday afternoon so not exactly sedentary ๐
I canโt think of anything which running has stopped me from doing tbh!
Ohhh, well done you! A run after that long, long flight and the massive time difference - wow! You deserve a medal for that!!! I'm sure you will get lots of exercise, and maybe one or two lovely runs by the coast too. Have a great week yourself ๐
Hey Linda, that sounds extremely painful, sweat in eyes is bad enough. The calf massage sounds wonderful though.Running stops me doing all sorts of things, all those things my very helpful friends suggested when I not only retired but became a one. You wouldn't believe some of the hobbies they came up for me. Jigsaws, painting ( my sister's an artist I'm certainly not taking up painting) and volunteering in various places, (I worked all my life and now they think I'd enjoying doing it for free?) To name just a few. Sadly I tell them I don't have time as I have a training plan to follow ๐๐ (what plan? I hear you mutter) the one that keeps me from all the things I don't want to do. ๐. Running stopped me going back to work when they thought it would take my mind off things.
Anyway....have a great running week everyone, I'm venturing back to the gym tomorrow with my granddaughter, sadly a run, row, swim and sauna are off the cards but to encourage her I'll go and walk sedately on the treadmill ๐, I feel as if a gentle run wouldn't hurt but terrified of dislodging the new lense keeps me sensible.....but come Thursday and I'll be back out there.
Haha, this made me laugh in such a good, positive way.
But! Don't be so fast to discount jigsaws ๐ They can be so relaxing and a perfect way to pass a post-run afternoon in bad weather (especially now you have super duper new eyes).
Those new lenses are definitely worth protecting for the short wait involved. Just think how amazing that run will feel though when it's time. Enjoy!
Me too. My sister gives me a was-gij each year and it gets passed on around friend and family when done. Good job I only get one a year, so compulsive . ๐งฉ ๐งฉ
Iโve given up all pampering since taking up running. No pedicures, no colouring my hair etc. Any treat money goes towards keeping me in running shoes.
I ran 40 miles last week. I was so proud of myself. Iโm taking a break this week from Hansons marathon plan. Iโve got too many other things in the calendar to allow for a big mileage week. Iโm sure my legs will also be happy for the rest.
Crikey ย ย linda9389 , I had no idea about your eyes. All the top sprinters must be using a different glue on their giraffe like eyelashes!
Having also done the GSR, I took it nice and easy last week with a gentle recovery run around canoe lake on Tuesday, and a recovery sports massage on Thursday. First time he has massaged my shins Ooch! Then on Saturday I did my 1st parkrun on the new route here and was pleased to do it in my fastest time since May in drizzly but still conditions.
My aim is to try and keep my fitness up with 10 k distances instead of dropping to max 5ks over winter.
Has running stopped me doing anything? Well, I used to spend more time gardening, and doing house stuff before running took over, but maybe thatโs just an excuse. ๐
I was gutted to find recently that the Rimmel display at our local chemist had been completely emptied. It now sits forlornly empty and dusty ๐ Hopefully weโll be getting a shiny new one, full to the brim with fab running lippy and nail โnarnishโ Iโm not holding my breath
Since the Pandemic I have noticed a lot of make-up counters are not at full pelt which makes sense I guess. I just googled who owns Rimmel now and itโs Coty! I thought they went out of business years ago but clearly not. They own loads of big brands!
Oh! Coty used to make all those Christmas soap sets we used to collect all year round for at the chemist Christmas Club. Theyโd all be set out beautifully, along with Cussons, Goya, yardley and Lentheric etc. weโd spend hours choosing one for mum Weโd get the hand cream too but I canโt remember what it was called๐ค Nulon!๐. Out of water, on with Nulon, because itโs creamy rich. Or summink ๐
Interesting point Dexy. There certainly are some crazy extensions out there (love giraffe-like). I hadn't realised it was such a thing, but certainly wouldn't have imagined top sprinters getting them done.
The GSR training and the massage must have both paid off; that sounds like a great parkrun - the result itself, but also the reward of seeing it all work out after all your organisation and planning of the new route ๐
We'll be watching you for those 10ks then Dexy ๐. I still try to get in the garden, but for sure running has stopped me from doing any housework (not that I have ever done very much I suppose ๐ค
Arghh Linda that sounds horrendous - you didnโt look like youโd had a lash emergency when we met up after the race. Nicely disguised! Iโm glad you worked out what it was. ๐
No earth shattering news from me. No ill effects at all from the GSR, so a 5k club run on Thursday evening, and a windy PR at the weekend. I also walked 5k on the treadmill yesterday whilst watching Mr Cheeky and our older grandson swimming. I find swimming a faff and didnโt fancy running, so I set the machine to 5kph on a 3 incline and had a nice march! Thereโs a great view of the pool so it was a pleasant way to spend an hour. ๐
The lie down in the massage tent gave me chance to cool down and mop up ๐ That's amazing to run the half and then the 10 miler, all on the back of limited training, and still come out with no ill effects. You must have an excellent baseline fitness level!
I'm with you on swimming - far too much faff involved! I do prefer to walk outdoors though; I admire your staying power on that treadmill!
Iโm so interested in your post Linda. My niece has false lashes and as I was admiring them, we discussed the process of getting them done. It was all news to me as Iโd not been near a beauty parlour in years. Your experience has put me off any further exploration! Dexy is right thou, there are some top sports women who seem to cope, I wonder what their secret is?
She doesn't run but we happened to meet up with her and her husband the evening after I did my very first HM and the next day she started to swim and go to the gym and lost loads of weight, so I think there might have been an influence somewhere ๐
I don't really have the patience to be still while they're done - how a lash tech has the patience to do such fiddly work for so long I will never know! I definitely don't think it's for me, even if she does find a sweat-proof glue; but for now I'd like to help her so will stick with her attempts until she gives up (and I feel she must be pretty close to giving up on me ๐).
Maybe I should take a look at these fluffy eyed sports folk and send them a message ๐ค - for the benefit of the lash tech, not me!!!
I think the ones the athletes use are the strip lashes rather than the individual lash hair ones you had Linda. I wore some to a 60s party once and really liked the look. But not for every day wear.
The camera focuses on it. Nails in national colours , far too long to be practical. You look next season, when they are in their blocks. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price for example, who also changes the colour of her hair practically every race. She still manages to win a lot despite all these distractions.
I said to my husband that they looked really glamorous! I look a total wreck when I run but perhaps we could try to run with make up and see if it makes us run faster ๐คฃ
I do remember JuJu here always running with lipstick on. She made a point about wearing it and reckoned it made her feel better. Maybe worth a try but mine would end up a gloopy mess no doubt ๐
I have put a bit of eyeliner on, but Iโm not sure the rest would work with me, one wipe with a buff and it would be gone. Yes ju-ju- was our glamour role model.
Theyโre fantastical creatures, esp the Americans and Jamaicans. Think Flo-Jo etc and those huge coloured nails They look beautiful and exotic donโt they. Theyโve got their game faces on ๐ฅฐ
I suppose if youโre only running 100 metres itโs fine ๐ ๐โโ๏ธ
Marathon make up is an actual subject. I found that out on reading the book Running Like a Girl. Following up on her recommendations for a dry skin face restorer I found the websites dedicated to all things marathon beauty Itโs an eye opener for sure Glitter anyone ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐
Extreme fizog cream, slick of nose/lip balm and Iโm ready ๐ All soon get wiped off mind you ๐คง Iโd end up looking like a panda if I added makeup to the proceedings ๐ผ
Okโฆ.this response will be an eyelash free zone! I do get very sore eyes if I forget to mop my brow when I take my hat off after a runโฆthey canโt cope with the stream of sweatโฆtoo much detail!
I am going to use the F wordโฆ..so stand back anyone with a sensitive nature!
I set out to run 15k with CB this morning. It was a bit warm, so I took water with me and was careful to keep the pace down. I couldnโt have been more careful. But by about 8k my legs felt like pokers! I kept going until 13k, but then I felt, what is the point? It is not enjoyable, another 2k is more likely to cause an injury than make me any fitterโฆ.so I walked back to the cafe! Failed to achieve target โน๏ธ. I think that I need a sports massage. That is my excuse of the day!
Oh, running hasnโt stopped me from doing anything, except maybe growing up prematurely!
Haha - just like me then, an eyelash free zone! My eyes sting and stream if I sweat and am wearing suncream, but never to this extent and not at all without the suncream.
Now, you know how we feel about the 'F' word! So you ran on, way beyond your comfort evel and then made an informed and sensible decision to pause before injury. CB wouldn't use the 'F' word, he'd tell you that was running smart!!! And you made it to the cafe too - I'd say that was target achieved ๐
Did you book the massage?
I like to think running is stopping me growing old; I don't think I'll ever grow up (I'm always looking for the 'responsible adult') but I long since came to terms with that ๐
I never apply suncream to my forehead; it hurts my eyes much more than sweat! Peaked cap for summer running and Tilly hat when walking.
So far as todayโs run is concerned, I canโt let myself off that lightly. I was playing with the idea of booking a massage last week, but there were no appointments available, then I missed my Saturday short run because of falling branches etcโฆso I decided to go for my long run today! Hands up it was a poor decision ๐, the early exit counts as mitigation only mโlady ๐งโโ๏ธ. I have booked a massage for Friday lunchtime.
As for behaviour, I was a ridiculously well behaved youth, a necessarily very responsible adult in my work โฆ..so now is my crazy time! ๐คช
I found a great suncream BC. It's a boating one which is supposed to be sweat resistant. Although I still sweat, the cream mostly stays put so long as I use that one. It has been really useful.
Ahh ... a Tilly hat. Mr 9389 has a Tilly that he was given on one of our first trips to Canada ๐
Well, it's you that you have to answer to for your running decisions, not me! So I know you know best on this one. That the massage is booked suggests you are on the road to redemption ๐
I thought of you and molly in our local cafe on Saturday. They have started doing a sausage loyalty card for the dogs. Get 9 stamps and the 10th is free. I wouldnโt have known it was a walk treat without your posts. ๐ถ
Oh dear that sounds very uncomfortable! I'll stick to eeking mine out longer with waterproof mascara ๐๐ I'll plug the one I love as it's a sports brand ... It's the skin in motion one ๐ running has stopped me wearing sandals this summer as my post marathon training feet and nails are NOT for sandals view ๐ thank goodness it's boots weather again!! I'm gingerly returning to running as my quad still hurts and I've been busy doing not running stuff after being full on for ages. Had a Sunday night concert for charity in Birmingham last night so spent Sunday with friends .... Not doing a long run!
It was extremely uncomfortable for a while CLR, but thankfully it settled down and no harm done. At risk of sounding like I spend my life at the beautician - I promise I do not! - I recently discovered the joy of painted toe nails (sorry Beachcomber66 , I fear I may have lost you again) ... I almost always have black toenails/falling off nails and dark gel polish hides an absolute multitude of sins ๐. Flip flops are go!
Be kind to your quad, it deserves a little TLC after all it's been through for you ๐ That sounds like a lovely weekend (and perfect for any over worked muscles). I hope it's fully recovered very soon ๐ค
Thank you and yes I have discovered dark nails are good (have to hide from my parents as they don't approve and yes I'm fully grown up with adult children๐๐)
I did the painted toenails as protection from bruising on my last marathon. I still lost my toenails but I guess I did it more in hope than expectation
I just use it as camouflage rather than protection. When I lose a nail there is usually a wrinkly, paper thin one underneath, but once built up with a bit of gel you'd never know!!!
Having spent all day (and several days last week), painting woodwork at my daughter's place ... I'm not going to get defensive on the subject of painting toe nails ๐
I donโt think Iโve had a full set of toenails to paint since I took up distance running. I keep my feet covered at all times ๐
My DIL recently asked me to go with her to have our โfeet doneโ. This included the leg up to the knee. I politely declined, not wishing to inflict my feet to an unsuspecting public ๐
I have been known to show up for a toenail appt with socks on (with the toes cut out - think fingerless gloves), just so the poor girl didnt have to experience my blisters ๐
Hi Linda and all VRBs ๐That sounds like a torturous thing to have done! My friend had similar done by her nephews girlfriend as a practice. I prefer the natural look, confessed to my workmate the other day that I don't own any make up anymore!! Except a coloured lip balm! ๐
Was only thinking the other day looking at old pictures ( as my hair texture is much fluffier now its grey) that I could do with it being nicely layered again but the trouble is I hate it when I can't tie it up for running so always have a long top layer! So that's definitely a gripe! ๐ค
I always think its stopped me from a nice lie in when we have to get up at crazy o'clock to make a mainland race on time ,as I'm not good at early mornings ! ๐
But can't think of much else atm!
I've been really lazy the last week, some my own fault and others out of my control like missing a favourite event yesterday as partner needed a lift to the ferry for a hospital trip!
Natural is good! I wish I could find a way to tame my hair when running. I have great envy of sleek, swishy ponytail runners and can fully understand why running stops you from changing your hairstyle ๐
Oh yes ... running has stopped many a lie in (especially on holidays in warmer climes) and it's stopped many a late night too come to think of it ๐. Those early starts can be brutal!
Hope the hospital visit was nothing serious and that you have a great run tomorrow tomake up for the missed event๐
My husband and I spotted two lovely ladies out running recently, with sporty fashion labels abounding, swishy ponytails, full makeup, matching hats with ponytails a-swishing, grinning like Cheshire cats all while filming themselves. My husband rolled his eyes ๐ He didnโt say a word. We were next to the canal at the time ๐น ๐คฟ
Haha great post Linda and Iโve loved reading everyoneโs replies. But your experience sounds awful, I just felt my eyes stinging while I was reading it.
I don't know if you remember when I posted about getting my eyebrows microbladed and I couldnโt sweat for two weeks and therefore couldn't run. Maybe the same rule applies to lash extensions but your lady forgot to tell youโฆ.
Anyway, thank goodness your experience didnโt happen mid-race!
Iโve given up blow drys for running because thereโs just no point any more. I used to have them and then went out that same day or the next for a run and messed my hair up and realised what a waste of time and money it was, so I still have my highlights done and cuts but have given up the blow drys. Mind you I seem to have my hair in a permanent ponytail or tied up as I hate having hair around my face when I run. Thank goodness for hats and headbands!
In running news, Iโve just done my first continuous 20 minute run in my recovery, the longest continuous run for over two months! The hip feels great, the orthotics feel great so all is good. Thank goodness ๐
I canโt stand a single hair near my eyes so I cut any interlopers off with the kitchen scissors My hairdresser noticed this last Monday. I suggested she get new specs ๐
I had my hair sheared ready for race day My hair is very heavy ๐ Every little โelps ๐ง
I had those lashes done the day before my wedding 43 years ago. They cost a bomb but they looked ace
However, on my two week โhoneymoonโ spent cooking three meals a day for Mr W, I melted my gorgeous new lashes in the rush of heat from opening the oven door. The blasted things melted and shrivelled up ๐ฉ. They looked like dead beetles ๐ซฃ. I couldnโt get the damned things off! ๐ฑ Nothing I did would unglue the damned things. I was so hacked off I downed tools and went back to work! Cook your own rotten meals! Hmmff!
they stopped doing those eyelashes maybe due to folks pitching up in Casualty ๐.
The lashes shed naturally with your own lashes was the selling point but I guess the melting thing got the technology shelved for a time. When I tried later to get another set I couldnโt. They looked fab ๐you could choose the spacing and the length Heavenly ๐
I donโt do eye makeup at all now - not since dry eye and psoriasis etc โน๏ธ Running outdoors in all weathers doesnโt help either ๐
