It’s been a while since I’ve been on here so it’s about time I posted something.
I started the training over a year ago so it’s about time I put a course together. Posted it earlier today and, so far, I’ve had four people showing interest.
As for my running, having been set a (cautious) limit of 118 bpm and advised to do two minute intervals (with one minute’s recovery), I built that up to eight intervals. I then dropped the odd recovery intervals to make it four intervals of five minutes each. With a ten minute walk to warm up and cool down, I’m covering 5k in about 45 minutes. That’s been enough to get me round a few ParkRuns.
So, although I’m still only doing recovery intervals, it seems that I’m not too far off being able to run 5k. Still a long way to go, but it’s a start.
Motivation has been an issue; for me, being able to go at a moderate pace is much more motivating than keeping the brakes on. Still, there’s still a need to exercise for diabetes control, recovery and general health. I’ve signed up for the Forest of Dean (5k) in the autumn but I’m not training with that in mind; it’s more about staying connected. Somehow, it’s not the same as training for something like an HM PB attempt. Anyhow, the C25K should help keep me focussed.

I know exactly what you mean by keeping the brakes on. So a recent 'run' for me was also based on the Galloway Method. After much trial + error, I think I've found the best Galloway mix FOR ME to get distance up whilst not over-exerting the ol' ticker. A12 mins brisk walk w/u + c/d, 5 mins jog, 1 min walk. I've got up to 10 reps recently. It's about looking forward and listening to my body.
Taking others through their C25K journey sounds like a brilliant plan, their enthusiasm will hopefully be catching and make you realise how well you're doing. Good luck and enjoy 😊
Don’t think I had much of a plan when I started C25K. Although I guess I might have had some thoughts about trying to beat my time for power walking an HM. A little while after graduating, I remember wondering how far I could go if I kept to a comfortable pace.
Think I’d have been surprised to learn that I’d be leading a C25K course though.
Hey, so good to see you back here SkiMonday , and to know that your recovery's continuing. Enjoy C25K from the other side, as it were - it'd be great to hear how things go!
Our club runs tend to vary between 5k & 8k so I guess I might end up extending the C25K into a C28k!
Although I’m aiming to follow the standard programme (so that they can use the app to fill-in), I may well end up adjusting depending on how the group progresses. On the other hand, we might end up doing the 9 weeks exactly as scheduled in the plan.
One of the group seemed a bit daunted to learn that I’ve scheduled two sessions a week. Decided to wait until R2 to mention that there’s a “homework” run making it three a week.
With just over two weeks to go ‘till the start, I’ve set up a WhatsApp group and added all the participants who’ve signed up so far. Somehow, that brings it much more into focus in my mind.
Good to see you back! Albeit not at the pace you crave, you know you;re making progress. Hopefully the C25K course will give you sufficient distraction for the short term.
