Today was billed as an 8 mile long run in the NRC HM plan. I measure everything in metres, so I was expecting 12.87k. I started the NRC app and Garmin at the same time. Garmin said I did 13.16K whereas NRC says 12.87 in the same time! I know the route….and I am going with Garmin! Garmin gives me a 7:08 average pace which makes sense.
Whatever; the run felt pretty tough. There is a 102m elevation gain, nearly all of it being in the first 2.5k, and whilst the sun was bright, the air was decidedly nippy. I think that 13.16k is a pretty big leap from the 2x10k long runs of the preceding two weeks. My legs clearly thought so. BUT…..I did it. I even upped the pace towards the end when instructed.
I stopped off for my flat white and triple chocolate brownie (that is one piece with 3 types of chocolate in it Mudita11 …..not three pieces 🙂) and also drank a large glass of water before setting off for home. Molly is now making “going for a walk time” noises. Doesn’t she care that I am tired out? Answer; no. She knows that it is Monday and therefore sausage day at the cafe! No rest for the wicked as my old Dad used to say! Oh, I found my never used Injinji socks hiding in a draw, so I took them out for a trial run. Really comfortable; thanks for the nudge 🙂
I wonder what the long run for next week is! Bring it on 😂😂😂😂

oh yes, the delights of technology! Still it sounds like a fabulous run, well done. I’m a tiny bit envious of your ‘post run banana’, sounds delicious.
I am doing three runs a week; the long run, one of the tempo or interval runs and the half hour recovery run. Last week I played the 15 minute recovery run as I walked home; useful information without additional effort.
Of course I don’t have another brownie on the Molly trip! That would be gluttony. I did share a mars crunch with Mrs BC, just to be sociable.🙂
Always trust Garmin over NRC is my motto. It’s slightly annoying when there’s a whole 0.5k difference like I once had on one of my long runs, and my legs were about to fall off, but because I needed to follow the plan to the letter, I snailed on until Coach B told me I was done. 🙄
Well done though, that’s a chunky one and you’ve chalked it off! I hope you treated Molly to her walk on sausage Monday. Bet she’s been looking forward to that all week! 🐶
Molly got her sausage; never in doubt! She also engages each member of staff one by one to get dog biscuits out of them. It is a really dog friendly cafe.
I did the same with my run; kept going until CoachB said we were done…..seemed to take forever! Now that I am running 10k plus again, I am thinking about flipping over into mile measurements, just for a change. My phone was down to 25% of charge when I finished….maybe I need a new one!
I’d love for Molly and Flossie to meet BC. Would you entertain bringing her to PR (one near you) one weekend, and parkwalking? There’s always chat of PR meetups afoot!
That is a lovely thought but it is an awful long way Cheeky. I am sure they would get on really well (when properly introduced!). I will give it some thought 🙂
The NRC app is bad at distance! I love it enough to forgive it but I don’t trust it at all in terms of distance accuracy. When I did my one and only parkrun with it, it only thought I went 4.2km.
Very reassuring, thanks MissU. It should make the leap to 15k next week seem easier…unless the app continues to under record distance of course in which case HM distance may happen earlier than planned! I haven’t decided to run that far anyway; the plan is just my way of building in a bit of structure. I don’t have a race in mind either; my main objective is to avoid IC!
I did one that on Saturday. Full of gremlins before I went for no good reason but the run was really enjoyable.
Last time I did the plan, I did cut some of the long runs off when I’d had enough and my watch said I’d covered the distance. The next run of mine will be ten miles and it was awful last time because I’d planned the route badly, had sore legs and the weather was grim. Couldn’t face another step. Hoping this time will be better! It was helpful knowing that I was probably training slightly longer distances so when I did the actual HM I could be super confident I was ready.
It’s a great plan. Seems like you’re really enjoying it!
It encourages me to pick up pace more often that I would left to my own devices, and there are some useful suggestions too. Despite today’s unplanned extra distance I am definitely getting something out of the plan.
Just checked. I did the “eight mile” run just over week ago and mine was 13.39km. I was practically yelling at the app to get on with it and finish the run!
I’d take Garmin over NRC too, but it is annoying having to keep going further just to complete the Guided Run 😠 Well done anyway. Just under or just over 13k is a chunky distance. I am just aiming to get back to running 10k without walking by the end of the month, but sadly no cafes within running distance of home!
Good 8 miles run for you today BC66, well done, I think you should keep to Garmin time, strange that the distance is different.
This morning I walked the exact 5K parkrun course that I ran just 48 hours earlier, at the end of my 48:50 minutes walk where the volunteer with the timer stands on a Saturday Mapmywalk on my Android phone said 4.95 Kilometres, I did start the walk at the exact place parkrun starts, perhaps the many trees on the course made the walk distance a little shorter interfering with the satallite link, by the way my neighbour, the owner of Holly the dog asked me to go an afternoon 5K walk with Holly in the countryside near to where I live, I did but that second walk with all the dog stops lasted over 90 minutes compared to the just under 50 minutes a few hours earlier.
Sounds super successful all round! I find the same with NRC and Garmin - they never can agree 🤣. A triple chocolate brownie, what’s not to love ❤️ 😊. Well done!
The plans which roseabi provided gave a range of possible extensions as in “from 10k to 12k.” The problem with the plan on this occasion was that it kept me running for a while when I thought (hoped) that I had finished. Big picture, probably good for me and the fact that I noticed shows how tired I was feeling. Like sandie1961, I was hanging on waiting for the “run finished” message ! A lesson there for the next long run. I might even repeat this week. I will stick with plan. I have got a lot out of it.
I just got a new phone and it seems to have a mind of it's own when it comes to GPS - it and Komoot bicker away and drive me mad! My phone, my watch and my bike Garmin all wholeheartedly disagree with each other too 🤷♀️ Then when it comes to an event, there's often a whole other definition of distance!!!The main takeaway seems to be a long run, no niggles PLUS a coffee and brownie (presumably with a seat?) - about as good as it gets right? 👌 🥰
Definitely Linda. I chose to sit outside for my apres run; the weather was pretty warm. The worry left in my mind was just how ready I was for the run to finish…hence my moan about NRC distance measurement on this occasion. Bottom line is that I have no niggles, and the extra distance will help next time round. Moaning is in the runners’ job description. 🙂
