I had to settle for a 10k run on Tuesday. I felt pain in my right calf and achilles, and with the GSR coming up a week on Sunday, I decided to get it checked out. Good news is that it is just tightness in the calf which is causing pain in the achilles; there is no actual achilles damage. Physio thinks that GSR should be fine, but no PB attempts. Lots of calf raises needed (I do them anyway) and some roller and massage ball stuff. She did suggest that I restrict myself to two short runs between now and GSR day, so I will do as I am told and call it tapering. I have booked in another appointment for next Thursday so that she can have another prod. So, I am hopeful. Injury gremlins are doing their worst for a few VRBs doing the GSR. Healing waves to all. ๐

(Happy) physio time again ๐
tight calves pre race are a symptom of pre race anxiety ๐ค๐ค. Zat is my diagnosis ๐
Honestly, with monotonous regularity I seem to come down with all sorts in the three weeks prior to race day.
I wish you all the best and hope youโre good to go come the big day ๐๐
Miss Wobble is Freud in disguise! Your secret is out.
I am sure that you are right up to a point. My calf has been a bit tight for a couple of weeks, but it has, hitherto, sorted itself out between runs. The worrying element was the achilles pain; as you know they take a while to fix. Happily in this case it was just a side effect of the tightness elsewhere. ๐
The Achilles is connected to the โฆ. ๐๐ถ๐ต. Itโs all about strengthening everything. Easier said than done I know ๐
It is 6 months since my last physio tripโฆ.might be a PB!All down to long slow runs.๐
Oh, I cringed when I read the title of your post BC but it all sounds good ๐ค
Just your bodyโs way of saying โare you really sure you want to do this? Canโt we just lie on the sofa instead? ๐
Maybe; but I am really looking forward to the runโฆand the meet up. I would have liked to get in a longer run this week, but 10 k will have to do. I have done 3 x 10 mile runs over August/September so I know that I can get the distance. Will just have to find a friendly snail to follow around the course.๐
There will be some pacers there BC, UpTheStanley ran with the same chap on his last two races.
Iโm friendly, but you donโt need a ๐ this slow Beachcomber66 ! ๐๐
Just getting the distance will be enough CC. I hope that your everlasting cold is improving. I had a Covid Booster yesterday and flu jab next week. I will be worrying about side effects next! Time to get a grip๐
Thatโs my goal too, to run over that finish line after shocking preparation. My cold is dwindling at last; at least I havenโt needed paracetamol today, nor have I been coughing like an ex 40 a dayer. Who knows, it might have gone entirely by the 16th. ๐ค
I was dreading reading this , after I saw the post title Beachcomber! A good idea to get it checked out but Iโm glad youโre ok. Whenever I have a race coming up, Iโm hyper sensitive to every niggle available, but thankfully all has been well on the big day. Enjoy that mini break and exercises.
Sorry Dexy5, not my best title. The smiley face was supposed to signal all well. Now I know that my achilles is fine, I can focus on loosening off the calf. Molly and I have just had a substantially pain free walk, despite the physioโs prodding ๐
It is weird how lots of us seem to be suffering in one way or another. My calf is the least of the issues. I will ignore it from now onwards! (Title duly edited!)
I ran 5 miles today, some of it on your race course. I am glad I didnโt have to do twice that distance, but then I havenโt been in training . It was glorious sunshine and a westerly wind, but not too strong. Perfect training for parkrun .
I saw your happy emoji and didnโt panic too much BC. If Iโd have seen ๐ฉ or ๐ฑ I might have been too nervous to read your post!
All sounds fine though. Your physio knows her stuff and knows you, so that has to be good.
Iโm very very very very excited about our meetup too. If you want to go slow, and possibly fossilize or accumulate moss, youโre welcome to run with me, but I think you might live to regret that!
Be a good BC and heed your physioโs advice and youโll cruise over that finish line. ๐
On it like a bonnet!!! Good luck BC ๐ค
Healing thoughts being sent from us, letโs hope itโs all good
Thank you both. Glad that you survived the army challenge. Enjoyed it but glad when it was over tells the story!๐
โTwas a long day but so happy that i got the chance to do that
That is fantastic! I felt the same after our first canoe trip in Canada in my sixties. We were just handed paddles, told to sit in the centre of our double canoe and sit still and that was it! It was a wonderful way to explore for miles with no chance of meeting bears!
Good news BC! There will be plenty of us taking it easy next Sunday methinks. ๐
Rest up well! ๐and be all ready for GSR ๐คx
Geriatric Musketeers rule ๐My left hip/thigh/glute is still giving me problems, but I am letting nothing spoil our mahoosive meet up next week. So excited ๐
When you think about it, the only problem with the 16th is the run! I do really want to do one โBig Runโ, and that wonโt be the GNR, so it would be really good to be fit for this one, but I am not stressed about it. It will just be great to finally meet everyone. Hotel is booked, travel is sorted; all that is left to do is to turn up! Fortunately that requires only minimum fitness levels. Catching the Portsmouth train from Waterloo will bring back memories from when I lived in Guildford in my early twenties. So, being 100% run fit isnโt that big a deal. ๐ซข Sacrilege!
That outcome must have been a real relief BC! I too am quite twitchy about next Sunday - I have ongoing niggles related to my right Achilles(?) and left knee(goodness knows what). A gentle 5k on Tuesday didn't seem to make things any worse so I decided that a longish run was needed yesterday to rule out a worst case scenario on the 16th.
I planned for 10k but if all seemed well to add an extra 2k - to cut a long story short, I managed the 12k (at 6.57 min/km) with no more niggles than you would expect and no real change this morning! So although I would have preferred to have done at least 14k in the lead up, having not run 10 miles since last year's GSR, I think that is the best I can hope for. My target pace will also be just over 7, which might just bring me in under 2 hours. ๐ค for us all!
So when you said โnext Mondayโ you meant Sunday right? As in Sunday 16, or have I misunderstood.? I nearly choked on my muesli ๐
About 7min/k would have been my target pace had all been well, which would mean a time of around 1hr 52. That was the pace of my last 10 miles on 19 September. I did a 12k on 26 September and a 10k on Tuesday last, the rest of my runs have been shorter. I wanted Tuesdayโs 10k to be another 10 miles but darenโt risk it. I knew that my right calf was tight, but thought that I had it under control โฆโฆwrong! So I am feeling a little bit undercooked, but we are where we are. Bigger picture is that I have done 3 x 10 mile runs since mid August. The calf has that usual post physio bruised feel to it, but otherwise feels ok this morning. So I may have just caught it in time. ๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค
Whoops - edited! Sorry to have nearly been the cause of a choking incident!
Glad all seems well (or at least no worse) this morning. My plan now is an easy parkrun tomorrow and probably one more short run mid-week.
Sending positive wishes to you ๐
Thanks Katnap. Latest forecast for next Saturday looks very wet! Early days yet. We are all waterproof anyway.
