The beginning of a new week already and it’s time to pull up a chair and grab your preferred cuppa and share how your running is going.
What sort of week have you had? Any news? What plans have you got for the coming week? We love to hear what everyone is up to.
I’m still plodding away and yesterday I headed to the arboretum for my long run searching for the coolness of the trees. It doesn’t open until 9am and so it was a tad hot even then 🥵but I took a little respite under the shade of this huge tree and made a mental note to get out a lot earlier for the coming week’s runs.
For those of you in the heat I hope you’re managing ok and you’re still able to run. But as with everything else in life, we know it’s temporary and so all we can do is to make hay while the sun shines 🌞😎😂
Have a great week everyone.

🥳 Got an event coming up in August? If so and you want some pompom send-offs from your VRBs then go here:
That must be lovely running there IP. We have a local arboretum but it’s not really suitable for running in - I don’t think you’d be allowed either to be honest! But it is very beautiful. Anyway, I managed three runs last week which is great, 2 short and one longer. This coming week, same as you, will need to get up early! It’s going to be in the 30s for a lot of it, so needs must. But yes, it’s temporary. Not going to beat myself up though if I don’t manage it all! I’m not working today so just had a delicious lie in, didn’t get up until 8:30 which is unheard of for me, but figured I needed it. Have a smashing day! 😁😊🌸⭐️
A lady once stopped and asked me if you were allowed to run in the arboretum?!! 🤔 I thought it was such a strange question because there were lots of walkers…..
I’m back running. My new Garmin arrived last week. I have new long run shoes (see photo) and I’ve re-started my Hanson just finish HM plan at week 7. I’ve also started looking at local Marathon options for 2023. I’m blaming TailChaser & Cmoi for making me think it might just be possible.
Fantastic that you're back out running RunWillie , and great-looking shoes too!
Of course a marathon is within your capabilities. You've been doing high mileage anyway, the challenge would be to organise the right mix of runs, especially long ones, alongside everything else you've got on your plate, notably your family. 👍😀
My cousin lives on the shores of Loch Long where the Vikings came ashore with their longboats in 16 something or other and carried them to Loch Lomond. They kept warm with all the exercise. I expect they noticed the locals wore plaid, as they do to this day of course 🙂.
Good morning all! Our thermometer says 22 degrees, which is warmish for me. Molly is sunbathing in the garden rather than curled up on the kitchen stone tiles, so it can’t be too hot. Oh wait…spoke to soon…she has just trotted in to curl up in her cool spot by my feet. Clever girl. 8k this morning, and it was a bit tough, no doubt because it was only two days after our 202m total ascent on Saturday. That run was definitely still “in our legs”, but we plodded resolutely over our chosen course. I noticed my right knee brushing the inside of my left over the last K or so; time for some squats with band or that will cause a strain somewhere. We have agreed to switch our savage hill run to Mondays so that there is an extra day’s gap between it and our Thursday run. Oh, I wore the forbidden short shorts today; I think I got away with it !
Next issue is to deal with my little egret look…..brownish legs with bright white feet through constantly wearing running trainers. I will be in trouble for that next 😂 Happy running every one.
Presumably you were able to sneak away before Mrs BC saw you in the short shorts BC?In this weather I think they are the only thing worth wearing. Anyway, have you seen how short the elites’ shorts are in the Commonwealth Games? 😳
Good for you for getting an 8K done this morning 👍 especially after your mammoth hilly run. You’re on a roll 💪
Nope; I was quite brazen about it! The opposition has ….dissipated 🙂37 k so far in August. All at a steady 7:00m/k; I can work on pace when I get a bit stronger, but I really think that trying to run too quickly has been my main problem. Now my target is to keep VO2 max at 40 for a while.
You do conjure up an image BC! 😂 Hey it’s hot though. Mrs BC will understand; she wouldn’t want you keeling over from overheating would she? People are wearing (or not wearing 😳) all sorts round here 😀
Hi Irishprincess , super photo of a nicely majestic tree! Though my instinctive reaction was to want to climb it, which I know is inappropriate for all sorts of reasons.
My running is still a struggle. Ran 6k last Tuesday morning, then did over four hours of Renaissance dance and choir rehearsals that evening. Result - on Wednesday I was limping again. As we had a paid performance on Friday evening I scrapped any ideas of running or even going for a walk until after then, and removed myself from two of our six dances so I could get through the one for which I was really needed.
Walked 4.6k on Saturday and ran 4k this morning, super-slow despite relative cool (22°). Garmin refused to find GPS so cut off the first part of the run, then started flipping between 7:40 and 6:10 pace from stride to stride. Grr.
However, one positive thing: following the Tour de France I went all fangirly and followed Romain Bardet on Strava. And he's been posting the most beautiful photos from recent rides in the Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme 😀
Oh dear Cmoi, sorry to read that you're still having problems. Mind you, four hours of dancing is surely fairly energetic and it all adds up on your feet and legs.
It’s so frustrating when technology doesn’t work. Like you my Garmin has, on a few occasions, failed to start. It’s then a dilemma on whether to run without or wait a bit more …… who knew running could be this complicated 😂
Anyway, take care and sending you a speedy full recovery.
I still need to come over to run at the Arboretum. Whenever we go I think how wonderful it would be. 🥰
I had an odd week with my HM plan last week, doing 2 speed runs and one recovery run. I ran out of time to fit the long run in, but I’m not bothered as I’m aiming for the GSR, not a HM. I enjoyed the speed runs; one was a progressive tempo run (wouldn’t have used that sentence prior to becoming a runner!), and the other was a fun intervals one. Such a hoot. 🙏🏻 No PR this weekend either, again no time.
So today I did an 8 miler at the gym! 12.6k to be exact. I’m currently sitting at the hairdressers with foils in my hair (no, I won’t take a photo!), and the chair never felt so good, nor did the cuppa. 🙏🏻 I think it’ll be the gym all week judging by the weather forecast. 🥵
I think of you when I’m heading for the arboretum Munks. But, given the current temperatures I doubt I’ll be there again this week, far too hot at 9am!
Your training sounds as if it’s going really well. The GSR comes around so quickly! Are you running Bristol again this year? I can’t remember if you said you would.
12.6K at the gym!!! Wow! Well done to you, that’s brilliant. You definitely deserve a cuppa (and cake?) after that. I’m at the hairdressers tomorrow morning for the same treatment and I always look forward to their coffee ☕️
I really must find time to come and run there IP. Or at least wear my kit when I go for a walk with my daughter and grandsons, then I could sneak off for a quick spin around the trees before heading to meet them at the cafe! 😋
Yes I am doing Bristol this year, but only the 10k. It’s on September 25th. I’m still smarting about the fast and flat course they promised for the HM last year. Err no, it wasn’t!!
Enjoy your cuppa at the hairdressers tomorrow. Mine doesn’t offer cake - if they did I’d have demolished it in record time after that treadmill stint! I had to apologise for my rather pink face. But better than rocking up with hay in my hair when I used to go straight from the horses! 😳
I think most race organisers “stretch the truth” in their descriptions of routes. Most of the so-called flat courses I’ve entered have been anything but. I guess it’s called “marketing” .
I had a fantastic week last week Irishprincess, on Wednesday I ran my 29th 10K and on Saturday at Drumpellier Parkrun I ran my 53rd parkrun, not just that, I met GTFC and Tasha99 and for most of the run the 3 of us ran together, my time was 30:51, my second quickest of this year, it was so nice meeting them, after the run they treated me to a Lattie and cake and after that GTFC took me home in his car.
Well done Al on so many achievements, especially your 30.51! An what an absolutely lovely day to meet up and run with GTFC and Tasha99 . And cake afterwards! Couldn’t be better 🍰
Afternoon IP. I do love a tree 🥰. Magnificent and thoroughly useful 👍
I have been running in the sun and making the most of it while it lasts 😎🌝. I was out this morning for a turn about the place. I was sweating like a dripping tap ☺️ I ran slowly and not for long 🙂🏃♀️
I’m doing the first ten miler of my marathon plan at some point this week. It might well be later in the day if the hot spell persists
I’ve been out thus morning for a 35 min recovery run Very hot, and I was dripping like a tap again 🥵. It was wonderful though as I had the trail to myself 🏃♀️
I feel for you in the heat IP. We are in heat warning temps too. I had to cut my long run short by 10k yesterday. The heat just took me out. It was 35 feeling like 45. I also got caught in a patch of Poison Oak (i think?) while exploring a trail, which was annoying and sting-y. Both my lower legs are itching and swollen up now. Mrs Decker and I had our Shingles vaccines on Friday night and it really messed both of us up for all of Saturday and even into Sunday. Hoping that was the worst run out of the way now. Onwards! 🙂
Nice pic IP - pleased too see it still looks green, mostly, rather than dried out brown!
After running HM distance for the first time I tried to dial things back last week and concentrate on my Garmin 5K plan (which aims for a 26 minute 5K on August 21), taking rest days on Tuesday and Saturday.
I am wondering how relevant the 5K plan is to me at the moment. Tomorrow, in week 11 of a 12 week plan it wants me to run strides for the first time; 6 by 20 seconds at around 4:30 min / km, around 75 metres. Doing strides as part of an S & F plan in May I was running 6 by 60 metres at up to twice that speed, so I am feeling a bit of a disconnect from the plan.
The main thing holding me back is being overweight, and I was impressed that according to my Garmin I burned 1600 calories running a slow half marathon distance. Kind of thinking that if I concentrated on longer slower running for now I might lose some weight and maybe then try a 5K plan at a faster pace. 🤔
Yes, there were still patches of green. I guess the trees can dig deep for water and they have kept all the grassland very long which means it doesn’t crisp up so much. But there are various shrubs that are wilting badly ☹️
Yikes! You’re going to run fast in these temperatures 🥵 rather you than me. What 5K plan are you following?
Horticulture is a bit of a blind spot with me; though I love to admire a pretty garden, I've no idea how it's done or what the different plants are!
I should hopefully be done before it gets above 16C, and it is only 20 seconds each time, with a minute's rest in between. 🤞
It's a Garmin plan I'm following, with coach Greg. In trying to balance the plan with other running I've learned new respect for experienced runners who seem able to do this very well!
A tree with character and history, beautiful! I'm torn between loving this weather on my bike and hating it to run in 😄. Long run on the plan tomorrow, so it will be another attempt at getting up and out early ... do wish I was better at that ... but with an unexpected day off work I can at least take my time and enjoy the view. Happy running/recovering everyone xxx
I’ll think of you Linda as I’m up early tomorrow too for a hairdressers appointment at 830 😳 Why I thought that was a good idea when I booked it I have no idea 🙄
Well, it's not anywhere near as far as most of you are and have been running, but this Friday is my first 10km race!! I'm really excited but a little nervous, is that normal? Plus of course the weather is expected to be hot 🔥The downside is, it's looks like my Garmin will be on its way back to Amazon ( thank you for all your help and comments, I've decided to return it and try again with another retailer)so no watch and no headphones allowed to keep me on track for pace 😞
I guess most of you will be able to gauge your pace with running the distances some of you run, but I'm still not good at that.
However, there's a medal at the end (woo woo my first one!) And a piece of 🍰, that's got to be worth it, hasn't it??!!🤣
Nerves give you extra adrenaline so are great for racing! Don’t forget your VRBs will be waving lots of pom-poms for you 🥳 And bling!!! And cake! So exciting.
Great news about your Garmin, definitely the right thing to do. But no doubt there will be chip timing for your race so you’ll get a proper time 👍
Today I took on Great Yarmouth North Beach parkrun, apparently it’s the hardest one in the country and I can see why.It was my first time on this one and probably my last 🤣🤣
Balloons. Today left the house at 6:15 and heading towards the balloon festival which coincided with my long run on my HM training.
Things didn't start to well as I tripped on a tree root taking the scenic route to Ashton Court. Instead of stopping myself I decided to drop my shoulder and roll. To my surprise I ended up back on feet with a slightly grazed knee and dirty leg
Morning breeze was nice and it was my first trial with the water bladder. Found some lovely new trials. Pace wasn't best as I kept stopping for photos.
Really well on the second attempt. First time I had the dreaded sloshing. Then read the hints, if you turn it upside down you can suck all the air and create a vacuum.
The other thing is working out the route for the pipe, I tried as illustrated and the mouthpiece ended up by my ear. Ended up just placing it in the bottle pocket and looping back up.
I took just under a litre rather than my normally soft bottle. I also added some ice , but no electrolytes. Probably still had a quarter litre left at the end.
