Hello running people. Another Monday, the start of another week and time for another chat. How’s it all going with you?
It seemed terribly quiet here over the weekend but I’m sure that meant that lots of you were out there running to your hearts’ content and having lovely joyful runs. I hope so.
Thank you to everyone who replied to my recent post and sent me good wishes. All that goodwill must have worked because my back is much better 🙂
Anyway, I’m more interested in how you’re doing. Tell us all your news here.
If you’re new or have been loitering and would like to introduce yourself then this is the place to say hello. We’re all runners regardless of speed or distance and every runner is welcome.
But whatever you’re doing, have a great week everyone!
We had a lovely sunset a while back so I took a photo 😍

🥳If you have a race in July and would like some pom-pom cheers then let us know here:
Hi Irishprincess,Thank you for the post … it is a lovely beginning to the week … I just ran a 6k (with NRC Coach Bennett) but want to be able to run longer … I can manage 13k (last week) but I hit that wall. I have been wanting to run longer, but for some reason my body just can’t make it; after about 5k or so I begin to get pain in my right hip joint … I stop for a few seconds and do a few hurdle steps and I can then continue the run relatively pain free. I regularly run 10k (sometimes through the pain!!)
Any suggestions?
I really want to be able to run longer than 10k …
You all have been such a great support … THANK YOU!
Hello and welcome here if you’ve not visited us before 🙂
Well done on the 13K, that’s great and it sounds as if you have a good routine going. I know lots here use and love Coach Bennett.
Running longer distances does put more pressure on our bodies so any weak area or niggle needs to be addressed otherwise it might get worse. Do you know the cause of your hip pain? Have you seen a physio? I certainly wouldn’t run through pain though. You don't want this to get to the stage where you can’t run at all and you end up on the IC for ages ☹️ that’s not fun at all!
I’m sure you're doing all the usual, warm up, stretching afterwards as these little things can make a big difference. You might need a good massage. Do you use a foam roller? The pain could be any number of things but tight muscles can be painful and I’ve found over the years that a good old session on my foam roller sorts out so many little aches. Maybe worth a go.
Once you get the niggle sorted, you can concentrate on your runs. Are you mixing them up? For example, a faster shorter distance, maybe a an interval session, a steady 5K and then a longer slower run each week. Many people (myself included) have gone from 10K to 10 miles/HM by doing this and adding 1K to your long run each week.
It’s also a good idea to take a reduced mileage week say every 4 weeks to give your body a rest. The suggested reduction is 40-60% of your average weekly mileage.
I do hope you get your hip joint sorted but please keep us updated and let us know how you're getting on.
So sorry to read that you’ve been unwell and glad that you’re recovering.
I’m plodding on with training towards the Chester Marathon in October. Following NRC’s plan and taking each week as it comes.
I’ve got tired legs after ten miles on Sunday and running club tonight. Rest day tomorrow. Saturday will be my very first ParkRun tourism in the Lakes and I’m looking forward to it!
Happy running everyone and stay fit, well and hydrated 🌸😊🌸
This a physio job I think. I found that hip pain appeared when I started to run 10k plus. It soon settled down with some exercises from my physio. The extra distances flush out underlying problems, which are usually just muscles needing a bit of development.
All well here although nothing exciting to report. Still on my comeback from Covid so no long runs. Plan this week is to do 80% of my normal weekly mileage. By the end of the week I would have done half of my annual 2022km goal so on track (just)
What a lovely sunset. Glad you are OK. I am wondering whether to book the Richmond Half in September. I am only running 5k and 10k at the moment, but fitness is improving thanks to a return to Parkrun/faster speeds and I think I might be able to build up to that in time. By the way, any chance of another HU HM event? I find them hugely motivating.
Morning! I’m a relative newbie here-I’m in the very early stages of the Nike run club half marathon plan ready for my first one in October. I’m currently building up to running five times a week which is going really well. I’ve finally learned how to run a recovery run properly which has been the game changer in that respect. I hadn’t realised I’d been doing pretty much every c25k run like a tempo run!
This week I did my first park run (a bit of a toughie-2.5 km uphill then all down again) but I was pleased to run it all without going silly and running it like a race! There was a brilliant hill speed interval run as part of the NRC plan this week which was the best runners high I’ve had for ages (it’s called “runner up”). Short and sweet and hugely challenging. Loved it.
It’s all feeling super positive at the moment. The main thing will be keeping it up through the summer holidays. I’m on the quest on bridge to 10k where there are lots of us focussing on consistency. Hopefully that will keep me on track!
Hello! Yes, we’re both running Bath aren’t we? So exciting 🤗
It sounds as if your running is going brilliantly! The NRC plans are very popular around here and you’re clearly getting a lot out of it so you’ve obviously picked a good plan for your first HM.
That parkrun does sound tough but it’s all great training and will pay huge dividends for your running in general but for race day in particular.
Keep up the great work and enjoy it all although it sounds as if you're having a ball 🤗
Yes that’s right! I was debating between Bath and Bristol but was advised by a friend that Bath is nicer as a first one and I think it’s a couple of extra weeks training.
The plan I’m following is 14 weeks but it’s further away than that so I can afford a few consolidation or recovery weeks depending on how things go. So far I’m really loving it. I got from 5k to 10k following the magic plan on its own which was absolutely fine but I think I need the podcasts and all the different types of run to push me outside my comfort zone. I’m fast turning into part of the Coach Bennett groupie club!!!
Thanks for chat hosting IP, and it's great to hear your back's improving. You'll get out there for that jogette, and more, soon.
I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my faceplant post - all your kind, thoughtful and funny replies cheered me up considerably. My mashed-up face, hands and shoulder are beginning to heal, and I'm only limping a bit, so I should be OK to drive again tomorrow and get out of the house without scaring too many people. Running's off the cards for a few days yet though.
Really glad to hear that your poor body and face are healing. I do think it’s amazing what our bodies can cope with sometimes. Proper machines they are!
Are you able to do any other gentle exercise or are you still too sore to do anything?
I'm not particularly sore tbh, though I've still got dressings above and below my left eye, and on my left shoulder, back of my left hand and all round my left little finger. That's where the worst of the gravel rash was!
I can weight bear on my right leg, just having to be very cautious with flexing or extending it. Took the dog out this morning on the lead and I was very slow and rather lop-sided!
There again, if I sit down for too long my leg seizes up and stiffens. Think I might go and do some ironing - at least that'll be productive!
Ironing!!!! I hate ironing and pay a lovely lady to do mine for me. Some people love it but after the first, and only, time I ironed one of the shirts for my “not-yet-husband- but-early-stages-of-living-together” he took the rest of his shirts to the laundry 😂 we still laugh about that 😂 He did/does all the cooking so I think I got the better deal 🙂
I’m sure everything will feel a bit strange and lop-sided for a while. Take care and enjoy the ironing 😏
Doing ironing shows the measure of my desperation! 😱
Also trying to finalise next Sunday's Renaissance dance practice and programme for our next performance. Given that I'm currently a one-legged wonder and half the group haven't replied to emails asking when they're coming to rehearsal and which dances they're OK to do, this is proving an interesting challenge!
Ironing is my absolute pet hate! What a flamin waste of time ☹️ My husband was away last week so he needed some clothes pressed before stuffing them into a hold-all 🙈 🙄.
How could I refuse when he bought me a posh new iron 🤷♀️ No, he can’t use it himself. The very idea 😁. He said my old one conked because it was used too infrequently. He’s a terrible wind-up merchant 🙂
I needed a new iron as I couldn’t watch the tv and iron at the same time as it caused the power to trip 🤬. I can now iron and watch adverts for cremations, comfortable recliners and sensible slippers 😁
It's washing machine plus oven that trips the power here 🤬.
Ironing generally requires Traffic Cops or Police Interceptors, ideally when they're zooming about baddie-catching near to where I used to live.
Ah yes, the ads - along with medical negligence, equity release and try-our-magical-cure-for-tired-legs - that are still running during breaks in Tour de France coverage. I mean, why?! 🙄😈
Glad to hear you’re on the mend too Cmoi. Here’s a story from my mash up a few weeks back:Much as I wanted to I couldn’t hide away as I had to go to work two days later, including our weekly meeting that’s held in a big lecture theatre with 50, mainly male, team mates. If they looked up from their phones or their conversations, they’d probably all notice the big golf ball sized, lumpy graze on my forehead and my slightly blackened eyes as I gingerly went down the steps of the theatre into my usual seat…
Thing is, I don’t thing anyone noticed apart from me 🤣 but you know what it’s like, you feel like all eyes are on you!
Be proud of your war wounds, they are well earned 💪💪💪
Thanks TailChaser - hope you're properly over your fall now? Love the story about your weekly meeting. I've stayed at home since Thursday, but that's because of the wonky right leg not letting me walk far or drive. I'll be wearing my wounds with pride tomorrow at choir though!
Daftest thing: I roll up to A&E in running kit, having changed only my shoes in order to drive more easily (leg was still working at that point) and everyone from hospital staff to other patients in waiting room asks "So how did you end up like this?"
All good now thank you, just my nerves every time I go near a tree root. I hope that wonky right leg of yours sorts itself out very soon. Enjoy choir 👍
I'm mending, though my leg's not great today. Got to choir yesterday evening to be greeted with "Well you told us you were scraped and bruised, but we didn't think it'd be quite that obvious!"
Hi IP, thank goodness that your back has improved. I wonder if all the vibes received in your post made it think twice before messing with your loyal VRBs …… 🛑
Nothing new to report here really. Bimbling away as usual, getting ready for a friend’s upcoming wedding this weekend and hols the following two - so no PR for 3 weeks. 😳 MissUnderstanding and I were at the same one this past weekend (unbeknownst to either of us at the time!) Ashton Court seemed like a good one to do for my 90th before the break. It’s always fun, and I marvel at the speedsters hurtling up, then hurtling down, almost taking flight! 💥
So remind me, did you end up deferring Bath or are you running in October? I had a paddy and requested my money back - as in any case it’s the same weekend as the GSR. How daft is that planning?
Morning Munks 🙂your 90th parkrun!!! That’s absolutely amazing! Just think what the celebration will be like for your 100th 🥳
I’m (hopefully) doing Bath in October but have got to the stage where I’m chilled about it. If it happens great, if it doesn’t what’s new? 🙄
Is next year’s still going ahead in March? I heard a rumour that they’d already postponed that but I haven’t checked. If not Bath, then we’ll meet up again somewhere else 🤗
Oh IP, I’m so glad you’re back is on the mend. Did you manage to take it by surprise?!
Last week was supposedly a recovery week for me. Why is it I always feel worse at the end of a recovery week? I did 10k yesterday and it felt harder than the 10 miles I did the week before. Maybe I’ve not been going to bed early enough or drinking enough, so I’ll give that a go.
The second stage of my marathon plan starts tomorrow. It’s getting a bit scary now, tomorrow is 3 x 12 minute threshold intervals. I keep telling myself I’ve done 3 x 10 so it’s not such a big increase, but will I listen?!! I think I’ll have to dial it back a bit and not go quite so hell for leather, cos at some point it’s going to turn into 2 x 30 minutes. I really don’t know why I’m so worried about that either though, cos I did that during the Vitality 10k a couple of months ago. Writing it down just makes it seem all the more ridiculous because I’ve done it before, so what is the flippin’ problem! 🤣
It’s more in the head than in the feet this marathon lark.
Oh, you're doing so well TC. I have no doubt you’ll see this through to completion.
How’s the eldest kitten? Hope he’s feeling ok.
I’m not going to even try a run until I get back home. I really don't want to risk the back and having to postpone yet another flight. I have reread that back pain is now yet another symptom of Covid so who knows? It’s much better but still not 100% so I’m taking more time out. All being well I’ll head out at the weekend 🤞
Fingers crossed for you IP, you’ll have to tell us all about it when you do finally get out 🤞
Eldest kitten tested negative today - yippee! He joined us for dinner tonight for the first time in a week. Much nicer than leaving dinner outside his room! Thankfully it was just a short bad cold.
And, surprise surprise, my 3 x12 minute intervals were fine this morning. I wound myself up brilliantly about them! 🙄
It sure is 😀. Tell yourself to shut up when you start doubting yourself 😀
I started my marathon plan this week. I got a phone call yesterday to remind me I’d agreed to dog sit for a week from tomorrow. I’d completely forgotten. Doh 🙈. Plans crimped! ☹️
Hi haven't posted for a few weeks. Was away and did a lovely beach run on Whitby a few weeks ago.
I suffered GPS problems on Sunday which seems to be a widely reported issue this weekend. I had planned to run around 2 hours but saw that I was near HM distance so pushed on, out to find that the GPS issue meant that I had ran 12.8 miles when I recalculated the route.
Also planning to run the GSR. I have joined the local running club but yet to attend. Mainly due them running on evening.
Hi IP. I don’t know; I take my eye off the ball for a few days and we have mayhem with injuries left right and centre! I am so pleased that people are on the mend; lots of solid North Yorkshire healing waves radiating out from here. Friday was packing day, Saturday was ferry day and we spent Sunday on a train! Yesterday was pick up Molly from kennels and unpack, so it is a few days since I ran or posted. I am pondering a problem. Twice this month I have pulled up (on short runs) whilst running with a short, as in 30 seconds or so, touch of tachycardia. I have been through cardiologist visits and tests in the past (a few years ago). The conclusion was that nothing needed to be done, especially as all of the risk areas such as blood pressure and cholesterol are good. I really don’t want to go through all the hoops again! I read recently that occasional tachycardia is quite common amongst older runners….so maybe it is an age thing. I will take it steadily this week and see how things go. Annoying when I have just got back to >10k runs, but these things are sent to try us!
See what happens when you're not around to keep an eye on us!
Oh flip BC! If it’s not one thing, it’s another 🙄 Have you got a consultant you can just ask? Just to put your mind at rest. Or your GP?
You’re a sensible runner so you know what you need to do and when. But it must be so frustrating. This running lark is one step forwards and two steps backwards at times 🤬
I might try the GP… but I always end up feeling that it is a waste of everyone’s time. Our long time family friend who is a consultant psychiatrist (in Australia) Zooms every Tuesday morning ….he won’t have an answer but maybe he will make me care less about it 😂.
BHF have an phone number to chat to nurses if that might put yourmind at rest without using up a GP appointment. When I was having issues a year or so ago I spoke to someone who was really lovely and very reassuring too
Thanks Linda, that is really helpful. I have now told Mrs BC so I will have to do something before I run again. I am just piecing together the history….rubbish in rubbish out applies to all diagnostics!!
I spoke to BHS. Very helpful. I was able to give her heart rate data and a good description of what happened. Her view was that I could continue to run as normal but should go to GP if it persists. So guess what? I am off for a trot! Thanks Linda.
Totally uneventful; apart from flat white and impromptu cafe lunch with Mrs BC that is.I have had another thought. I did catch myself over-breathing in the first chunk of the run; the symptoms I experienced in my chest could be the result of hyperventilation. That would be a more controllable and benign explanation than tachycardia arising from any problem with my heart. The first episode this month was at Park Run when I was probably a bit anxious about running in a crowd again. Who knows; , but I will keep an eye on that. I feel much happier about running now, which is the main thing. 👍
My trouble is that I am very sensitive to people's behaviour. A GP who says "I will need to see you, but I wonder where you would put your case on my list of priorities?" isn't really a lot of use to me!
There are some great doctors in the practice. I was just unlucky that day. I just kept my eye on the ball (needing a referral for an x-ray) rather than reacting as I might have done otherwise. That kind of behaviour does put people off ringing the surgery though. Forget it; run time 🙂
Having been recently diagnosed, I may be seeing AF everywhere BC (and you may have already ruled it out), but contact with my GP produced a very quick ECG, which might confirm one way or the other?
You are right JP., I should go to the GP. I have been investigated for paroxysmal AF before (years ago); the problem is that these episodes are so few and far between that it would be hard to catch them on an ECG, even with the aid of a holter monitor. My stroke risk is low; BP and Cholesterol are both good, so outlook should be ok. Just something I could do without.
Hello Irishprincess, So pleased that your back is better 😊🏃♀️🎉 I had two months with no running and have had two physio appointments. Lots of exercises, but my meniscus tear lets me know that it isn't happy. Unsure about the future, but I completed W2R3 this morning and my sister restarted C25k with me. Mr Garmin seems to like my low heart rate so continues to put me in the top 5% for my age. I really don't feel it. Also been suffering with back trouble, worse after a night's sleep or sitting.Happy injury free progress to you. 😊🌸
We’re both going through the wars a bit aren’t we? What do the physios say about you running? I guess if you’ve managed W2R3 than you're feeling sort of ok?
Fingers crossed for both of us putting our woes behind us and happier running days ahead 🌷💐🌼
Sorry to hear you're still not confident in the back IP, but hopefully you will soon be home and able to get going again. My hand is slowly improving - no painkillers now, even on an 80k ride at the weekend (still have to go over bumps one handed mind you 😍). Saturday I did my first UK parkrun in ages - with my daughter's 30 year old partner who insisted on chatting all the way round - that was quite a challenge 😱🤷♀️.
Today I ran a lovely 17k in the sun - by the river, through trees, along stony paths ... and on one rather uneven bit of proper pavement I almost came a cropper again; I have no idea how I saved it as my upper body was only about 2ft above ground level at one point - sheer terror saved the day I think (gastro intestinal questions were asked for the next two or three kilometers 🙈😍). But a run like that, on a day like this, with no niggles ... honestly it's the stuff of dreams (well, my dreams anyway 🥰).
Well, if you can cycle for 80K Linda then the hand must be pretty good! Apart from the bumps of course 😩
Gawd, I’d hate to run with a chatterbox, so exhausting. Couldn’t you tell him nicely to shut up 😂 and he clearly wasn’t running fast enough if he could talk!
That 17K sounds just gorgeous 😍 it’s runs like this that keep me going at the minute. Just the best. Or rather, the thought of runs like this 🙄
So lucky you didn’t fall again! Can you imagine going back to your dentist, “I don’t know how to tell you…..” 😳🙀
Hello IP thank you for hosting the chat this week. It’s great news to read that your back is improving. 👍😃
I’ve just found out that I’ve been selected to represent my area club in the 200m and 4 x 100m relay at the U.K. championships in Nuneaton on 31st July. There’s only one place per event so I’m thrilled to have made the cut. My recent 100m time moved me into contention apparently as it places me 13th in the U.K.
I’m working really hard in training, both off and on the track, and have my sights on a PB at the champs.
The other news I have is regarding my suspected hernia. I had an ultrasound today and the chap couldn’t see a hernia. I still get pain in the area so it will need further investigation but at least I’m ok to use starting blocks again in my race events.
My next race is the 200 in the Sussex masters on the 25th. It will be a good lead in to the champs as I haven’t raced in a 200 since May.
The picture is of my new starting blocks. I decided to treat myself. 😊
I am very aware that my running now is very different from most on the forum. I hope it provides some interest to others here despite this.
Hi Brian 🙂 gosh! Your running career is really taking off! I had no idea you had to buy your own starting blocks.
Many congratulations and a big well done on your selection. You’ve clearly worked very hard for this and it must be so satisfying to get to this stage. I’m so excited for you! All we need now is to see you on the telly and I’m sure that’s happening 🙂
Good news about the hernia or rather lack of. At least it’s a process of elimination and you can tick that off the list.
I’m sure you’ve given your race details to Linda for Events so we can give you some Pom Pom cheers.
So happy for you and your back IP! I’ve been a bit out of the loop as we were away for a wedding this weekend and I only got one run in last week. So today it was back to hills and trails. Weather has cooled a bit making it lovely for running in the woods.
