So how’s your running going? On top of your training? Well done! Taking it easy? Why not?! Or – let’s hope not – maybe you’re stuck on the IC. If so, get well soon!
Tbh I’ve been struggling to get out at all. A month of 20°-43° heat has broken with heavy rain and thunderstorms, so I’ve been keeping close to home, rarely managing more than 7k, and simply running wherever my mood takes me.
The joy of that though, is that it leaves space for serendipity: running past barley crops just as Sting’s “Fields of Gold” comes on, or coming across a family of foxes or a stray cow.
Same goes for the weekly chats: there’s everything from accounts of marathon training and overcoming injury, illness and setbacks, to stories of running bras, weird weather and fab dentists. You'll even find tales (tails?!) of delightful dogs and their daftness!
So no matter what's rocking your running world this week, tell us all about it - you never know whom you might inspire!
Oh, and I found this: worldfitnesslevel.org/#/ Had a play and it told me that I have a fitness age of 36, rather than Garmin’s utterly bonkers 20. It also gave me exactly the same VO2Max figure as Garmin: 39. Spooky or scientific? Whatever, have a great week!

I’m three weeks post Covid today & still not 100%. I managed 50% of my normal weekly mileage last week with my longest run being 5 miles. Trying not to get impatient with recovery although today I noted that last month I had run 220km and this month I’m going to barely make 100km.
On a positive I am running again & will this week run my 500th run since completing c25K.
I don't think you realise just how amazing you are RunWillie , clocking up as many runs and miles as you do, on top of all the rest of your life! Go you!! 😀👍
Back from the weekend jollies 🏃♀️ I slept for England on my return so I guess I needed it. I stayed in the creakiest hotel in Christendom so sleep eluded me 😩
I’ll post about it when I’ve tidied up 🙂.
I have been running through a field of barley for a few weeks. It usually contains rape, so glad they’ve rotated. For me the fields of barley conjured up The Lady of Shallot. I was in the Wolds for the weekend, the undulating fields of which provided the back drop for Tennyson’s poem. He lived there and taught at the grammar school, which we ran past. A hero of mine 🥰.
I hope everyone enjoyed a weekend of running. I certainly did 🙂🏃♀️🍰🏅
I thought of you Cmoi as we ran along a stream through a lovely glade. It was so quiet. So many feet passing through but you could have heard a pin drop 🙂
Ooh Tennyson. His selected poems is one of the few books I still have from my school days 😍 and shows all my jottings and young writing (we were allowed to write notes in the margin) I still dip into it now and again….. how wonderful MissW. Thank you for the memory 😍
Your post made me realise I've never read Tennyson misswobble . I can only assume that he either didn't pop up in the O or A-level syllabus when I was doing mine, or none of my English teachers was interested in his works.
Love the description of the undulating barley fields, stream and glade. Sounds very romantic - sadly my version would probably involve an allergic reaction, wet feet and getting covered in mud! Not so much The Lady of Shallott as The Lady Full of Grot!
It wasn’t in my syllabus either. We got hideously unromantic texts to study, such as “Iron Founders and Others”. Actually it’s not at all bad having reflected on it since.
Lol I just did that test! It agrees with my Garmin age, but is being way too kind with the VO2 max! I’ll take it though 🤣.
I am amazed you’ve even been managing those 7ks in that heat Cmoi , well done. It’s all about adapting isn’t it. I am trying to work out how to train around holidays etc as I have the Great South Run coming in October. It sounds ages away, but it’ll come round fast, I’m sure. In the meantime I finally got my certificat médical sent off to the La Parisienne race organisers - my GP signed it and stamped it, although it’s not the stampiest stamp I’ve ever seen. He must have just looked at my medical notes, as I didn’t even have to go in. Fingers crossed they accept it as it’s in French but with an English translation underneath.
My last run yesterday was a joy - I think my hydration levels have been slipping, as my last quite a few runs have been a slog. Anyway, I upped the water again, and I’m hoping it’s what made the difference. Back to basics really! Rule number one, stay hydrated! Taking that into account, I hope to up the mileage a bit again.
A smashing photo there, what lovely countryside you must have around you. All the best! 😊😊😊
I'm tempted to re-do that test to see what happens if I slightly vary my answers Frenc !
Great that you've got your La Parisienne certificate sorted. You've reminded me that my own health certificate's now expired so I can't currently enter a race here even if I wanted to. I should've asked my doctor when I went a few weeks ago. It seems ridiculous to take up an appointment just to get a new certificate.
Yes, I'm very lucky where I live. Since Strava's now allowing videos, I recorded cowbells during this afternoon's run. As cattle round here are in fields, not on open mountain pastures, bells don't really have any practical use, and there's only one farmer round here whose cattle have them. It's wonderful to hear them when I run up that way. 🐮🔔
Very happy to be entering my first cutback week of my marathon training plan this week. I think I definitely deserve it!
Yesterday was a 10 miler and I am loving these long, slow runs. There is no pressure on time or speed, so it makes for much more chilled experience. However, I did 19 miles between Thursday and Sunday and both sets of Achilles would like to stop now please. Even the right ankle has started to join in now.
So it’s a couple of easy 5ks this week and an easy 10k on Sunday. I think I’ll marshal or something at parkrun too.
I do have a lovely massage booked for tomorrow which I’m really looking forward to. As part of my right side’s demand to get as much attention as my left, I also now have an annoying corn on the side of my right foot, so a visit to the chiropodist is calling. Who said running was cheap?!
14 weeks to go… 🤯
PS - a fitness age of <20 and a VO2 Max of 52? I don’t think so 🤣
Well done on your marathon training TailChaser - I must admit I envy your ability to do things properly. Don't envy you the niggles though, hope the cutback week, massage and chiropodist visit help.
Did you get those figures from the test I posted? If so, what did you input?! I thought I was doing quite well with it but I cannot possibly match your teenage athlete scores! 😉🙃
Turn another page on the teenage rampage now, now, now!
I think I'll go back, add a centimetre to my height, knock one off my waist and a kilo off my weight, and tell it "I go all out" for exercise. Just to see what happens! 😈
I switched off Garmin yesterday because it was telling me nonsense pace figures and I couldn't bear to think what the algorithm would conclude. I was so much happier running afterwards!
Oh, isn’t that just a lovely photo? She looks as if she has all the time in the world…. Just stopping for a chat with this lady runner 🐄🏃♀️
I love the image of you running beside a field of barley crops when “Fields of Gold”comes on. How gorgeous. One of my favourite songs 😍 Might try that experience myself….once I get back to running that is.
I’ve got Covid and haven’t run for over a week ☹️ but I’m feeling ok and fingers crossed I’ll get a negative result tomorrow (it was a very thin and faint line today but the NHS app still registered it as positive. I was so disappointed ☹️)
Anyway, each day that passes is a day closer to freedom 🤗
Oh I hope that you're finally Covid-free Irishprincess and that the rest of the saga works out OK.
That cow was grazing happily, apparently oblivious to the fact that she wasn't in the field with her mates, when I arrived. I promptly spoiled her fun by taking her photo and snitching on her to her owner. Ran past today and she was back where she was meant to be, still looking lovely and chilled.
Hope the same is true for you too, back out there running very soon IP. 🤗
Great that you can actually go out again IP! I inadvertently scared some cows yesterday, they jumped up with chaotic jangling of bells and ran across their (tiny) field to try to escape my black and fluo lime lycra. I apologised to them. 🙈
Your running sounds so lovely, but you can definitely keep those temperatures, yuc. I'm happy to report a very ordinary and uneventful week. I'll have another of those please! I have even managed a couple of bike rides but my right hand is still very painful (not an issue when running, but a big issue for riding and for work). I'm suspicious that I may have a hairline fracture on the pinky side, outside edge of my hand, but will give it another week or two and see if it settles - if not it'll be a one handed 100k sportive next month 🚲🙈. Have a great week everyone 😀
Only just seen this, sorry 😞 I have finally started my Garmin half marathon plan this week. My half is on 26th September and the plan is designed to get me to a time of 2.12 on 25th September (10 minutes faster than my HM time 2 years ago). Separate report to come, but wish me luck!
