I love posting about runners who push it all beyond what most of us take as unthinkable. So, here we go. On Saturday Aleksandr Sorokin set a new 100k World Record of 6:05:40 at the Centurion Running Track in Bedford. Pause until it sinks in.
That is 5:45min/mile pace (3:35min/km) for SIX+ HOURS, for those of us counting at home.
Incredible, awesome and beautiful. 😀

I can’t absorb that, 😀. I’ve just somehow managed to comprehend the speed at which Kipchoge smashed a two-hour marathon (every single KM split being between 2:48min/KM - 2:52min/KM), and now this. For 100 kilometres. 😀
I saw a documentary about a Nepali mountaineer Nimsdai Purja who climbed 14 of the highest peaks, three of them in just 48 hours, some with limited oxygen (don’t try that stuff). His Vo2 Max according to the guy in the test center was ‘something they have never seen before’. This must be in the same league. A mix of genes and extraordinary hard work.
He clearly knows his stuff, being an extraordinary ultra runner. For me ultra means distance but for some it’s also a cocktail of speed and mileage. I can’t do 5K at that tempo…..lol. Brilliant!
I thought that Frenc! I did my first one a gnat’s under.
My first thought was that far on a track! Round and round 😳. You’d go barmy 😁
He must have the ability to zone out. I think we all have to some extent but that’s just amazing in itself before we even start to be in awe of his strength and fitness. Great stuff indeed! Well done Aleksandr 👏👊✊
I thought, ok, six hours of running is not THAT bad if your knees agree, but when you take into account his tempo then the reality sinks in. Super result, done by a superior runner. On the track. Mad.
I was recently invited to take part in a six hour track run. Funnily enough I declined😁. Run round a track for six hours to see who goes furthest. I suppose if you’re like shiz off a shovel then you’d fancy it 💥☄️🔥
Not sure how you’d have to wire your brain/focus to endure it. When I went for 50K I made sure I ran past some of the most iconic London sites simply to forget what I was doing and preserve what was left of my sanity. Otherwise, nah, couldn’t do it. I ran 42k in the park once. Then again, the park was big and I could explore different paths. On the track? I’d go……@&@&@….
I do a 7 lap marathon each year, which I thought would be terrible, but it’s not. I’m glad I didn’t let the lap thing put me off. It’s quite funny as it’s run on a caravan camp. When you’ve seen one van you’ve seen em all 😵💫
It reminds me of the song “Little Boxes” All made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same 😀🎶🎵
So much respect for you misswobble , I get bored even running along a flat road with no bends. Love the "Little Boxes" reference, though I suspect the van owners wouldn't!
Not only that. If you go beyond and look at people who ‘do’ much longer distances then it all goes to fantasy land. Here we’re taking about a ‘simple 100K’ record. I’m fascinated by pretty much anything that people can do (and I can’t 😀), but this, given that I participate in longer running, shakes me to the core. If only we could focus at positive things in life, the life of all of us would be, well, much more full of life. 😉
Imagine what his training must be like? Whenever I read something like this, I read it again and Google it further. At times those results seem like a typo. I guess he ran on the track in order to break the record but his mental strength must be incredible as well.
Yesterday I gave it my best shot running at an average 5 minutes per km for just 5K (ok, it’s a bit hilly where I was) and was feeling I was carrying the contents of my stomach in my throat. I then remembered his speed. Over 100 kilometres. Lol. Different zone, parallel universe. 😀
Of course, my case as well. And having fun. I’d never compare myself to anyone, that for some is a crushing game. However, I happily follow, admire and respect all who achieve the extraordinary, and this is nothing short of it.
