Ever since starting Conch to 5k over3 years ago, I have done at least 3 runs a week without fail. Last Monday I turned my ankle on these boulders. Iced and rested for 2 days and then ran. No pain whatsoever. But the swelling hasn’t gone down and yesterday, after a full day back at work I had a full on cankle. Doc has said not to run until after an X-ray.
I was just about to get to 800 miles for the end of June too.
Running is my medicine. I’m not sure what I’m going to do. How ridiculous is that.

Sorry about your ankle Tasha99 but you must not run until it is completely healed, if you do it will just get worse, let's hope it's not too long before you can get back to running 🏃🏾.
As someone who also ran after turning an ankle and subsequently spent four weeks on the IC, rest and ice until you have that X-Ray. A little patience now means less time overall spent not running.
Thank you. It’s hard to rest when I’m on my feet all day at work. I feel like I need to rest it but can’t when I’m at work. I think I’ll get told off if I don’t go in.
Bummer! Really sorry to hear.. I have experienced most running injuries. From the list I'm only missing breaking legs in five pieces and entangling all main arteries, I've done pretty much all the rest of it. The thing I did when being sidelined was cross-training in order not to lose all my fitness. That could be anything non-impact, from cycling to swimming to stretching and weight lifting. I even did sulking. I'm very good at that too. You'll come back, those things happen. I find it miraculous that you have done such a long stretch in perfect health. All the best!
I’m sorry to hear this Tasha. I can fully sympathize, as I had my first ever injury last year and was off running for 3 weeks, came back too fast and had to take another month off. I found cycling quite helpful in place of my long run days especially, but please don’t be like me and try and rush it or overtrain your cross training. You’ll be back and stronger for it.
Oh no Tasha99! I’m so sorry 😞😞😞. I’ve turned my ankle, usually the left one, quite a few times, and really badly, and it does take time to heal. You will need to be really patient. Keep it super strapped up for work so you don’t keel over to the side which is what used to happen to me! There are some fab rehab exercises out there, so when you’re able and your doc says it’s ok, this will give you something to concentrate on. I know it doesn’t feel like it now, but it will pass. 😊😊😊
Thank you. I wore a strap today but it just swelled up underneath and then hurt by the end of the day with the pressure. It doesn’t even hurt tbh so I don’t know what’s wrong with it.
Bu**er 😡 it’s so easily done when running. I’ve done it twice, once before I was a runner and the second time running at night. Every sprain is different so fingers crossed you won’t be out too long Tasha 🤞
Oh no Tasha, that sucks. I hope the x-ray is clear and it heals fast. Can you do something else in the meantime? Cycling saved my sanity for the five months my foot was out of action.
Maybe try it and see how it feels? I guess it depends where the issue is. Mine was a metatarsal and all the medics said cycling was OK, but there's probably more movement in the ankle when cycling.
Oh Tasha99 , so sorry to hear that, it must be infuriating. Really hope you can get is sorted out quickly.
Also, if I remember rightly, you're a teacher, so I get what you mean re work. Although I can manage to stay seated when I'm doing one-to-one adult lessons, I'm constantly on the move when I'm teaching classes of apprentices - it goes with the territory!
Sorry to read this, and I know exactly what you mean about it being medicine. I have bipolar and running is the only thing that’s really helped me. Every time I get injured I think how I’m going to cope, but the only way to deal with it is give yourself a break, listen to your body and just try and heal without stressing, so you can come back stronger.
Good luck, I hope your back up and running soon 🤞🏼
Thank you so much LLJ. Not much I can do about it. But it’s quite upsetting tbh. But there are worse things going on in the world than my stupid ankle.
You’ll be ok, I’m sure you’ll heal quickly. I’m a whole box of crazy and I managed to cope so you’ll be completely fine! I’ve had more injuries than I have runs at this point 😂
Aww Tasha, what a shame. Who put those boulders in the way anyway? 😅
Hope you get to have an X-ray soon and they find something which can be fixed quickly. In the meantime, keep smiling. I’m sure you’ll be back running again before long. 🥰
Oh Tasha, I’m sorry to hear that. Can you get an x-ray on your way to work? Does your boss know? Sit as much as you can (preferably on a computer chair with castors so you can “scoot” & get those little ‘uns to do the walking & come to you. It might be a different teaching arrangement for a few days, but they will love to look after you.
So sorry to hear that .Did you just slip to the side and invert your ankle? I work in minor injuries. If you inverted your ankle there is two possibilities. One is that you have a possible fracture or it is all soft tissue damage where the ligaments have been over stretched. So definitely rest ice compression and elevation . Been on your feet will cause the ankle to swell. I’m afraid it takes a few weeks to settle but better than a fracture. Fingers crossed it’s the latter.
It is so frustrating , I will keep my fingers crossed for you
Aw Tasha I am sorry to read this. I may not have replied to many of your posts for an age, but I have read quite a few and look on with mouth open astonishment at all that you have achieved with your running, your enjoyment of running shines through and you are an inspiration. 🏃🏻♀️🎉I went for quite a while with no injuries, but have now had quite a share of them.
A while back when I was teaching in a secondary school I fell off my bike because of ice and fractured my pelvis. The GP gave me a return to work note stipulating that I must sit while teaching and have help carrying things. Harder with 5 and 6 year olds, but somehow because a doctor said this, I found ways to change my usual working practice.
Get well soon. Here are some flowers for you 🌹🌸🌺🌼🌻🌷💐
I sprained my ankle about 4 weeks ago so was swollen and bruised. I know how you feel as just started walking on treadmill in gym. Running on back burner so will be hard when I get back to it. I didn’t even sprain it from running but just twisted it indoors . Unfortunately my stamina will have gone so will have to build it up again when I can get out there again.
🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 for the xray results. Once you know what you're dealing with you can then decide what's feasible. You may need a few days off work to properly rest it 👎🏻
Oh Tasha!! We are undermining the image of the invincible Northerner. To be brutally honest (am I ever anything else!!), those rocks look like a sprain or break waiting to happen; probably just getting cautious in my old age but I would have given that lot a wide berth!! That said, my calf is still playing me up so I have no room to talk. Get well soon; you have a fantastic summer ahead of you 🙂
Thanks BC. There was no way around them unless I went swimming in the Tees up near High Force. It is the Pennine Way. But it’s not much of a ‘way’ here 🤣
Swimming might have been safer. I used to spend a lot of time near rivers; an ever changing landscape. I bet that the route was beautiful......but a bit lethal !
Ah good, no fractures is a relief I bet! Once you’ve seen the Physio, they’ll tell you what’s what and you can take it from there. I imagine all your running will stand you in good stead for your recovery, but like yesterday, foot up and ice please for the rest of the day! Oh dear, sorry for sounding bossy. Take care! 😆👍🏃♀️
Ohhh, what a bummer! And what an achievement to have run 3 times a week for 3 years!! Amazing! Those boulders look beautiful and it’s a pity that they lead to your injury. I hope you recover well and are back to the runs before you know it!
