First up, a big shout out to paul1960 and GoGo_JoJo who wouldn't be constrained by either time or distance! They have already opened our HU Virtual Running Event with a 21 mile and a 20 mile run respectively. Massive kudos to our two fabulous, fabulous frontrunners!
β At time of posting we have a brilliant 30 entries to the HM and 45 to the 10k β
β β β
If this is the first you've heard of it, it's not too late to enter!!!
Half Marathon or 10k option
Main event Sunday 28th March, 9.30am
(although for greater flexibility we will accept runs at any time on Saturday 27th March - see update below - Sunday 28th March, or at any point during the following week of Mon 29th March - Sat 3rd April)
Links to earlier posts for more details can be found at the end of this post.

β Remember we have created a public playlist (HU Spring 2021 event playlist) using all your suggestions; available in Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.
If you don't have a Premium spotify account, you can still access the Spotify playlist but do bear in mind that there will be occasional ads and you will also be using your phone data (there is an article here with suggestions on how to minimise your data usage if that's likely to be an issue support.spotify.com/us/arti... ).
or if you wish to set up your own version of the playlist on a different platform, you can find the list of tracks here: docs.google.com/document/d/...
β We have created a virtual race route for you to follow - one for the 10k and one for the Half Marathon. These can be accessed by downloading the RunGo app and searching for the appropriate route. The route will keep you company all the way (a little like Laura's podcast or MJ or Sarah and the others in the C25k app, or a guided run on NRC, or even the London marathon or London Winter 10k apps). A personalised HU virtual race with words of encouragement, entertainment, progress and route info, it is designed to help the time fly byπ€ It should co-exist happily alongside your choice of music player and whatever you normally use to record your run. It is of course entirely optional and whilst we hope it will make your experience more enjoyable, we cannot offer any guarantee you will like it πππ
If you are interested, but haven't had a try yet, check out the update post for links to the Guides which will help you get everything set up. There is even a '1k Try Me' virtual route which we recommend having a go with first, so everything is ready on the day. The three virtual routes can be found here:
β There are two really important points if you plan on using RunGo to follow our virtual route
- you must press the Virtual Outdoor (or treadmill) button to start your run. Do NOT press Run this or you will miss out on our virtual run experience!
- if you are on Android you need to download the route before running it; we have updated it many times this week and may do so right up to the start, so please, please make sure to press the 'Update' button before you run to ensure you have the latest version
β Finally, there appears to be a storm rolling in on Sunday!!! This happens. The most prestigious events can fall victim to lousy weather and invariably the show goes on! Just occasionally there are last minute cancellations or alterations because of safety. Given concerns have been raised, we have decided to 'open' one day earlier for anyone who would prefer to run this Saturday 27th rather than Sunday 28th. Unless the forecast changes, I still plan to head out Sunday morning for the 'main event', but if you are at all concerned and prefer Saturday please do go for it. We will make sure the virtual routes are finished by tomorrow evening.
If you have any issues with the playlist or Rungo, let us know below. Any other questions, do shout.
So all that remains to be said is rest well, eat well, sleep well .... and we look forward to seeing you at the start line. Good luck everyone!!!!

Woohoo! Looking forward to what the virtual 10k commentary will bring. After managing 8k this week, I am hopeful for managing the 10k (after all it was only Nov when I ran a half, so how hard can it be??? π€£). Palm Sunday is our first return to gathered worship at church, so I am planning to do my run on Wedsπ PS Linda I am very impressed at your efforts to proof listen to all the commentaries - above and beyond!
I don't know what distance you're at just now, but it's worth noting that some plans will only have you running 10 miles before your HM - leaving the adrenaline of the day to carry you through the last 5k. Not necessarily recommended if you are trying to run a PB or beat a target time, but for a sensible first half it would be doable. Only you know whether it will be sensible or not π
I can definitely do 10 miles, and Iβm pretty sure I can do a half, as I will be doing it very slowly as Iβm heart rate training at the moment. So if I do do it then itβll be the slowest half ever but at least it will then be easy for me to beat next time
π Iβm very close to committing π€¦ββοΈ I will see how my legs feel tomorrow and then decide. Theyβll have had two days rest by Sunday anyway so should be ready for me to embarrass myself π
Actually, Iβve decided, Iβm in! Gives me something to push for and it doesnβt matter if I donβt manage it. I will start earlier if thatβs ok, as running at 140bpm means each mile takes a while!
You'll sleep better for having made the decision!!! If it doesn't feel right on the day, then finish early and submit a 10k time instead! Bib number 032 is now all yours and we'll see you on the start line!
Itβs going to be the slowest half marathon youβve ever seen! But yeah sounds like a plan, at least if I canβt make it Iβll have done the 10k. Iβm really excited now, a bit more pressure to do it should help spur me on!
Thereβs no hurry This is just for fun π. If you go very carefully and see how far you can get. Thereβs no need to overdo things See how you feel on the morning as the weather might be bad which could help make your mind up
If the weather is bad then Iβll definitely do it as I love running in the rain! Iβm pretty sure I will sign up, but will just see how my legs are tomorrow. So Iβm 99% of the way convinced lol
Hi Linda,Congratulations to paul1960 and GoGo_JoJo πππ₯³π₯³
I have been really looking forward to Sunday so I was gutted tonight to see the local weather forecast of heavy rain and strong winds on Sunday morning. π₯
I don't mind running in the rain, but I'm not sure about an hm in a storm!
I'm going to keep my eye on the forecast and hope to run on Sunday. π€thanks for opening up the event on Saturday.
It will still be a fantastic hu virtual event. π
Since I posted, the wind has been dropped on my forecast ... so maybe there is room for improvement for everyone yet π€ Sadly weather is pretty much uncontrollable when it comes to races, but it gives us something to talk about π
I shall wear my cap, as I did today, and another wide weather proof headband to keep it secured to my head. That's my windy/rainy weather look. Terribly uncool but it does the job.
Sounds good to me. I will be in a striking combination of purple and waterproof fluorescent coral. Happily there wont be many around to see me ππ
I checked mine yesterday and it looked horrific but itβs changed this morning - for the better! Still windy though but half what theyβd forecast yesterday.
The wind speed is going to double though in the early afternoon, by which time I hope to be bathed and fed with my feet up π€
Itβs looking a little less hideous here on Sunday, and the wind, although far from ideal, is from a more favourable direction than last time. Iβll be there, and Iβm hoping the fun playlist and RunGo will make my HM fly by!
Youβve gone above and beyond on this Linda! You deserve a mammoth π as well as a π and several gold βοΈ βοΈ for your efforts! π₯°
We can do this! A bit of wind will make us feel like we made a real effort, make us feel proper hardcore πͺπ. Your comments are really kind although by the end of 21.1k you may be cursing us - feel free to keep those thoughts to yourself π€ͺπ€·ββοΈ
Hi Linda9389 and running friends! It looks like we might avoid the worst of the storm here on the south coast on Sunday, so Iβm running then anywayπββοΈπ
Good to every one whoβs getting out there. Take care, have fun and do it for HUHM! πββοΈπββοΈπββοΈπββοΈππ
Excellent!!! Thinks look more promising here now too. Maybe we have more control over the weather than we give ourselves credit for π See on that start line on Sunday ππ
Hello I think I entered but have a knee problem so wonβt be taking part π’ itβs been 12 days since I ran and I just donβt know what to do , not sure if the doc is correct with meniscus it started hurting walking down the stairs this week too , anyway enough of my miserableness good luck to everyone π
Ahh I'm sorry to hear it's still bothering you like that. The runs always wait for us - having had a couple of long spells on the IC I can vouch for that. Take care. When thinks get tough we should think of you and how lucky we are to be out there running. Sending healing vibes your way. Take care.
When my knee went last May (speed challenge too much for my old joints!) I went to my sports physio as soon as I could. She diagnosed runners' knee plus a very painful plica which had me limping badly. I ended up with carefully placed and tensioned KT tape and a shed load of exercises, much of which was aimed at hip strengthening. It worked! As you are having doubts about the diagnosis, maybe a trip to a specialist sports physio is worth thinking about. My lot are serious people with masters degrees; I am confident that they know what they are doing.
Just as a guide, my physios charge Β£45 for a new patient ( they need added time to capture history) Β£40 for a 45 min follow up or Β£30 for a 30 minute follow (times vary with treatment required). I guess fees will vary from business to business.
Have a great race everyone. I'll be running and thinking of you all but not racing. Distance and time will be decided probably during my run π€£ happy running π€
Have a great run! Remember this is a race with a difference - the winner being the person closest to a randomly generated time. Everyone has the opportunity to win. Granted, you do need to run at least 10k or 21.1k to record a timeπ€·ββοΈ. Happy to enter you at the very, very last minute (i.e. after your runπ) if on the day you decide to run 10k or more. Whatever you decide, have a good one!!!
Thanks again for all the amazing organising linda9389 and roseabi ! Although we have storms forecast for this evening, Sunday is supposed to be sunny and around 8Β°. That would be good as my fundraising pack finally arrived, and consequently I shall be running wearing not only a fab running vest, but also bunny ears - see photo!
Women's running shoes, running vest and bonus bunny ears.
Loving the vest and the ears! When I said photo ... not sure I had a flatlay mind, but I'd have done the same π Have a great run with all the extra motivation your fundraising brings π
Game plan is getting dafter by the minute linda9389 . Just downloading the playlist and have decided to preface it with "Remember you're a Womble!" It was the song chosen by my late brother-in-law to close his funeral, and my fundraising is for the hospice that cared for him. Having just listened to it for the first time in 13 years, turns out it's surprisingly good as a running song!
WOW, this really is an event to behold, thank you so much for your efforts on routes, playlists, commentary and all of the fun! I plan to run my 10k mid week, as I've been gradually upping my distance and just need a few more days in the bag and a couple of shorter steady runs in the legs, though we are forecast 20 degrees for Tuesday so I may avoid that!! Balmy 14 on Wednesday may have my name on it.
Hard to fathom 20 degrees, but apparently so. Thank you, really actually looking forward to it. Just off to check out Run Go and the playlist, don't need any last minute panics!
Very excited about this. I have had a nice restful week with just a few short easy runs, have started working out what kit I want to wear, have trailwind ready for mid run and recovery, virtual route downloaded and nice shiny HM medal waiting in anticipation of success. I keep checking the weather forecast which fingers crossed doesn't look too bad at the moment here (like David I'm on the south coast) - no rain forecast, just pretty windy. I had vague notions of running along the coast for part of the distance but decided it was not good weather for cliffs so am doing a more sheltered route instead.
Thanks so much for all the effort that has gone into preparing this, so exciting to have our own virtual starting line.
You sound well prepared, excellent! Running along the coast, without shelter, for 21.1k brings all sorts of challenges. I remember get well and truly sandblasted on more than one occasion on my Coast HM and the amount of sand left in the bath was unbelievable!!! Seeking shelter is a good move in my opinion π
ππ and I think one of the roads on my route will be partly flooded, my shoes will be wet but they will be clean ππππ Have fun π₯³π₯³π₯³πββοΈπββοΈ
I'm going to be rocking my new Nike Shield shoes! Ready for the weather. Bring it on. I tested them out today in the squall that was going on when I turned out this morning. I came back with dry feet. Yay!
Whilst I would greatly like to take part, I have to be sensible.
On Tuesday's short run after my 10 miler I tweaked my ankle somehow. Yesterday evening I did a few short jogs whilst out walking which showed me that it wasn't ready.
It's not been injured to the point that I wouldn't be able to run but I don't think it's wise to impose over an hour of repetitive strain on the ligaments.
I don't think I actually officially entered, so please can you put me down for the 10k? I may surprise myself and switch to the HM last minute but I'm not really ready just now for the longer distance.
I've got a HM route planned misswobble but haven't actually calculated the 21.1k. If it's under I can add distance fairly easily at the end. If it's over, I guess I just have to keep running, as there aren't really any short cuts. Though I could maybe get a lift from the hunters π€£π€£π€£
Thank you again for all you have done and especially offering for Saturday as an option. The two days look much the same here, possibly a couple of mph windier on Sunday. I will stick with plan A and if it's grim i will abort and try Wednesday instead.
Hi, some of my virtual running buddies are doing this. I will be out in support but will only be doing 5k. (Iβm still building up to run 10k) Thanks for the play list. I love the idea of sharing some banging tunes with you all.
So looking forward to this linda9389 . Thank you for the tunes and rungo which is helping make this feel like you're all here running with me!!! Good luck everyone!!!
Thankyou so much for all the effort put into this! I will stick to the plan to run Sunday, although I was planning a trail route π€ that might need some adaptations if the rain keeps up! Good luck to everyone whenever and wherever you are running!
