I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this question, but I've had a little look through some older posts on the forums and I've not found an answer yet. I've been running 3 years now and I still haven't figures out what to do with my phone and keys in the summer.
In the winter I am sorted, I have a high vis jacket that has pockets and that works.
For the summer, I have leggings with pockets (they fall down) and a flip belt (that rides up), so I'm thinking of other options. I have a hydration vest, which is great for long runs, but a bit unnecessary if I'm only going for a couple of miles.
So I've ended up hiding my keys and not taking my phone. But I've decided that's stupid and I really should have my phone with me just in case.
I saw an advert for a freetrain, which kind of looks like a backpack without a backpack? There was a high vis one, so that's good in my books. I can't seem to find other similar things to compare to.
Anyone found a solution they would recommend? If I find something good I don't mind spending a bit on it, as it will get loads of use. It just needs to stay in place and be comfortable to wear.

I wear what you over there call a Bum Bag? A belt pack It holds my phone, key, ID, and. emergency cash. On long runs I can fit in some glucose candy to keep me going
I had to try out three different things before finding the perfect holders:
- you mention Freetrain, and I have the V1 vest. And I love it! It can be worn underneath my fleece, takes phone and keys, and the phone flaps out so really easy to take a quick peek. I even take most of my pictures from within the wallet! Only negative: it doesnโt have holders for water bottles, so itโs my preferred solution for shorter runs.
- I then tried a hydration backpack with front bottle holders. But, Iโve got a bit of a bust, and itโs not a good solution for me.
- so for long runs, I found a belt with phone holder and two small bottle holders. And I love that as well! It again can take keys as well. Phone does not flap out, but it has a finger print area. And it does not slide!
So not sure this helps, but maybe that little bit?
Thanks for your thoughts on the freetrain, nice to hear from someone who has given it a try. I think it might work for me, as I don't want it for long runs.
I used to have a bum bag but now I have my music and tracking on my watch.
I read an alert from the police in Swindon last week on another forum. It was about runner who had been in a road accident and they couldn't trace who he was because all he had on him was a front door key. ๐ I had already given this some thought and I've bought a parkrun ID bracket. Name, emergency phone number and I'm ready for June with a barcode. ๐
I got my parkrun parkcode on a bracelet for the same reason, although I'm really bad at remembering to use it. Perhaps I should get that back out too ๐
On runs where Iโm not wearing my water bottle belt or hydration vest, I wear an armband phone holder and take just my car key off the bunch and pop it in the little zip pocket of my leggings/capris/shorts (they all have one). ๐
Iโve used one since C25K and I find it really comfortable to wear. Thereโs also a slot for a key, but I donโt trust it and would rather zip mine into a safe pocket. ๐
I was thinking about what you said about your belt riding up. Do you perhaps wear it round your hips? I have found it is much better to wear a running belt that fits snugly round my waist so it doesn't move. Any cheap belt with an adjustable buckle does the trick - there are many on Amazon that have plenty of storage space for phone, keys, credit card etc. xx
Yes, I was wearing the belt around my hips. Perhaps I should get one that fits around my waste instead. Unfortunately mine is not adjustable, but that could be an easier solution.
I love the side pocket in my leggings. I have underarmour and new balance and nike and have no problems with them falling down. I use a flipbelt and wear it on my hips and it goes nowhere (the only time it struggled was when I had a large bottle in the back and a small one in the front - I had to balance it a bit differently). I wear a camelbak if I really need more fluids, but it's not my preferred option. Good luck finding something to work for you ๐
It's the side pockets in underarmour and flipbelt on my hips that I have a problem with. I guess we're all different and I just need to find what works for me ๐
You only need to take one key with you generally. Either the car key or door key, not the whole bunch. This should go in most leggings that come with a little pocket. Your phone can go in any belt, there are loads on the market so have a look to see what suits you.
I carry my phone in a belt I bought years ago, it was cheap and holds phone, personal alarm and big hanky ๐ For long runs I take a Nathan belt that holds water plus all of the above.
If your leggings fall down you need to look at other brands. In my experience I don't get on with those with drawstrings. Sweaty Betty is brilliant, check out their sales as they really are superbly cut and never ever fall down....
Hope you get it all sorted, otherwise itโs all annoying โน๏ธ
I have decathlon trail shorts, capris and skort (skirt with integrated shorts) they all have two zip pockets on the waist band - the one at the back is big enough for a smart phone, plus there are other pockets around the sides/hips to stash snacks etc., I tend to carry a soft 250ml water bottle in the back pocket, it sits in the small of my back and doesnโt slip down.
Iโm a pockets gal, and look for gear with the most pockets. Like IP I take a door key, not a bunch ๐
I found a pair of Ron Hill capris with loads of pockets but theyโre really beat up now and sadly Ron Hill stopped doing them ๐. I keep repairing them ๐. Got some Evadict shorts from Decathlon which have a phone pocket and cubbies all along the waist band. I posted a pic of them a while back
Cycling jerseys often come with pockets. Iโve got a beauty with three deep ones at the back
For me my bottoms have to have a tie at the waist ๐
I hate carting stuff on runs, I keep it to a bare minimum. Big hankie, door key ๐โโ๏ธ I do take my phone now since getting locked in the park ๐
I remember reading about cycling jerseys before, perhaps that's something to look into as well. All fun to see what works best I guess!
I only have two keys (car and door) with me, so it's not like I'm trying to carry around a massive bunch, I used to separate them when I run, but I ended up not putting them back together and getting myself locked out of the house on more than one occasion! So I think it's best I just take both!!
My key wore a hole in my tights pocket as I ran, allowing my key and cash to gradually empty from my pocket ๐ณ. Iโd run across two cow-filled fields which freaked me out first time, but I had to go back and search for my door key. My husband had gone out for the day on a footy tournament so I couldnโt get back in ๐. I searched high and low but failed to find it ๐ค. I keep repairing the pocket ๐. I have an arm key thing but itโs too big for my arm so I put it in a pocket instead
I posted a pic ages ago of my lovely cycling jersey Bargain buy though ๐. Theyโre a bit warmer though I find
Iโve got a Decathlon ultra lightweight wind resister gilet thatโs got a phone pocket up front and three zipped pockets across the back For ยฃ9.99. I tried running with three water bottles in there but too saggy. I was asking a bit much though ๐
If I need bottles Iโve got a vest. My ideal though is always to run light and hands free ๐โโ๏ธ๐
I bought a vest for longer runs but don't e tend to use it much. I have a cheap bum bag big enough for small water bottle, phone, keys, nibbles etc and a flip belt which is ideal for phone n keys. When I started I used to carry a water bottle, but don't like doing that now. On a another note Ive added my parkrun tags to the bags for ID
If you only have a smallish front door key, you can slip the hole in the key through one of your shoe laces before doing the shoe up. Works a treat! ๐
That wouldn't help me. I need three keys to get in the house if there's nobody in: porch key, mortice lock, rim latch lock. I have a belt with two compartments: small for keys, large for phone.
Thanks for all the ideas, you guys are always great! I'm going to try a cycling top (I kind of wanted to try one anyway, they have pretty designs!) and a belt I can wear around my waste for now and see how I get on with them.
I also (accidently) bought myself two pairs of leggings last night, so I'd better stop shopping for now ๐ณ
Mine is an ALTURA jersey, a lovely crushed strawberry colour. The pockets round the back are tricky to access but are good for lightweight jacket, spare drinks flask, The pockets are long and deep so stuff shouldnโt fall out
I have a Camelback ultra belt, it was pricey but worth the investment in my opinion. Even with 500ml or water in I barely notice Iโm wearing it and it fits snuggly around my hips
