Exercised

I've recently been listening to the audio book of Exercised by Dan Lieberman; I found it really interesting and thought others might have read it and had thoughts, or might be interested in reading it.

I found the section on how exercise affects our body particularly fascinating, and the section on exercise and aging was very interesting too. I liked having it as my soundtrack on recent runs as I was able to feel good about all the things my running was doing to my body as I went :)

If you'd like to get a taster, there's a review below and he talks about the book on the Trail Runner Nation podcast 27 Feb (episode 511)

At last I understand why it is so hard to get out of the door! I have evolved to limit my physical activity whenever I reasonably can!

Fortunately, as we have found in this awful pandemic, we also seem to have evolved a need to get outside and to enjoy our surroundings. (Even if we do not need to hunt or gather). I always try to view my bike rides, walks and even runs ( 😅) as play and enjoyment rather than exercise. It helps me to get out of that door.

I think you'd enjoy the book, particularly the Active grandparent hypothesis!

I’ve not read the book but I remember the interview on TRN was quite enlightening. Love that podcast!

Yes, I have recently switched to listening to podcasts while I run and so far it's my favourite.

Just had a look at this on Amazon, looks interesting. Are there a lot of graphs and diagrams in it that would make it a pain to read on a kindle? X

I listened to the audio book so if there were graphs and diagrams they would have passed me by entirely! If there are charts that I missed, it was perfectly comprehensible without.

I read his earlier work "The story of the Human Body" as well. Another read in a similar vein but with a leaning to the those of us of a certain age is Dr Norman Lazarus's The Lazarus Strategy might be of interest.
