½ marathon training week 2 - in the snow

Although I'm pretty much at sea level I did wake to a few inches of snow this morning. Didn't wake till 8:20 so those from village still going out to work were dealing with the road conditions. Pot of tea in bed then the urge to go was too much. Headed out at 9 with my lovely new yaktrax on my shoes. The plan was to do one 2 point something km circuit of the village to try them out, if all going well I'd keep going. They are brilliant, you can feel them grip every footstep. So yaktrax ✅, shorts ✅ thermal gloves ✅ Oakley wraparound sports glasses ✅

6 loops and 1 hr 44 minutes later 14.11km completed. Next week long run 10 miles

Weather while running - snow, hail, wind and sun. 1 deg feels like 5

2 "rest days" looking after toddler hugs who weighs in at 11.5kg so there's my strength training sorted.

Happy running everyone 🤗

Very impressive!! After a rubbish night’s sleep, I saw the frozen ground and decided a book, a coffee and log fire would have to be enough for today.

Probably very sensible, enjoy🤗

11.5kg, good strength training for you with toddler hugs and a very good 14.11km run in the snow as well, more snow for us tonight and tomorrow with an amber weather warning,

I have an appointment on Saturday at 9.40 am for my first Covid 19 jag so I'll be running my 35th not parkrun in the snow on Friday morning, good luck with your HM training.

I will tell you how it went on Saturday and any after-effects it may have on me, perhaps a little sore or tiring compared to the normal flue jag which I got that last October, I will run my 5K (not) parkrun on Friday.

Well done GH! I’d be tempted to get YaxTrax too, although I really really don’t need any. I have trails to run on if it snows. No snow here today though, just mighty cold with that bitter wind. 🥶💨 I did the same distance as you this morning, totally unplanned. I figured as the trails were frozen, not muddy, I should make the most of it.

Stay warm and safe. 😀

Thank you. My walking boots are needing replaced, but none in stock, so yaktrax will soup there too. Well done on your run.

Well done GH, getting out in that weather, and still in your shorts 👍 i'm not running today, might try 2 rest days for a bit, probably walk later.

Well done Grannyhugs! A great start to the week and loving the new shoes.

On another positive note, it got lighter much earlier this a.m it seemed. Lanes that would have been inaccessible last week at 7 were suddenly usable. Spring has almost sprung!

Thank you, definitely getting lighter and staying bright later, as a teacher i always thought February mid term was the turning point.

The shoes are my normal brooks ghost 13's but I added a new pair of yaktrax - coils on them. They'll be great on my walking boots too

😂😂 thank you, it was exhilarating and loads of lovely comments from the families out playing in the snow.

What a wonderful post grannyhugs, I’d better get some yaktrax sorted or my planned restart this week isn’t happening, snow everywhere ⛄️

Thank you. I’d never even heard of yak trap until a young runner told me about them last week and luckily the local outdoor shop had some in stock and personally delivered to the door.

Great run and good to hear about the yaktrax too. Thanks for inspiring me to get out and run my Monday 5k I too looked out the window and saw the snow, all morning I kept thinking it’s stopping now etc and kept procrastinating- I read your post and said to myself just get out there and run - so I did! 🏃🏻‍♀️👍😃 thank you

Thank you and brilliant that it inspired you to run too. Well done, delighted for you. I feel we need to run in every condition once to allow us to know what we can cope with. 🤗

Mentally I was back to be a child enjoying the snow but it was sheer bloody mindedness that kept me looping the village 6 times passing the house each time 🤣🤣

A pot of tea ☕️ in bed sounds lovely,

Amazing that you can run that distance, wow half a marathon, very inspiring, well done you 👏👏👏🏅🏅🏅and what lovely strength training.

Wow the yaktrax sound fantastic, love your trainers as well which brand are they?

Shorts!!!!! Omg you are so brave, in those weather conditions!!! I went out for a short walk today wrapped up and felt frozen, (must wear more pairs of 🧦!!) admittedly walking very slow!!

Enjoy your well deserved rest days!🏃‍♀️

Grannyhugs profile image
Grannyhugs10 Miles

Thank you, it was lovely runnin the snow, my shoes are Brooks ghost 13s the yaktrax just stretch over the soles of any shoes so I can use them on walking boots too. I get well wrapped up with many layers of mountain gear, hats, buffs etc for walking but always a rucksack so I can peel off. Somehow for running though shorts are fine, they are the double layered ones so lycra or similar around upper thigh. Summer weight shorts above 4 deg.

Sounds a fantastic run, your training is going very well 👍. No need for yaktrax here at the moment - no snow or ice! (West Somerset) 🙂
