Third 10 Mile Run πŸ’¨

There’s nobody more surprised than me to post that I’ve completed another 10 mile run this morning!

I set out on my circular route which goes through farmers’ fields and a couple of hamlets, before coming back down the main road into the village. The forecast is mild with a breeze.

Well, I put it to you that the forecaster doesn’t know the difference between breezy and windy! It was reasonable as I set out. I wasn’t fixing to chase any PBs on this run; I wanted it to ebb and flow naturally. If I felt like backing off for a while, then I would. I listened to Coach Bennett on β€˜A 10 mile Run’ which I had heard before, and knew he was going to suggest Fartleks at some point. Well, no, Coach! Not doing that! Otherwise I enjoyed this guided run.

I eat up the kms at a relaxed pace. I’m aware of the split times, but not ruled by them. Once warmed up, I can feel my pace increasing and I go with it for as long as I want to, then back off again if I’m getting tired. At about 8K I’m on a back road crossing farmland when the wind really starts up! But it’s a tailwind, so all is well. Then I realise with some dismay that once I turn right to head back into the village on the main road, it will be a headwind! For about 6K.

At 10K I reach the main road and turn. I walk a few paces as I drink some of my tailwind mix. I have no choice, it’s the way home anyway - I can run it or walk it, the wind will be the same! It’s battle time, so off I go. It’s not pleasant at all and I think of my sofa πŸ˜€. Looking ahead, I can see a hamlet that might give a little protection and I keep going. At 11K I look at my watch and I’m surprised to see that my pace is fine, even though I feel I’m going more slowly. My heart rate is up as I’m working hard. I see I’ve gone into Zone 5 and back off some more. I reach the hamlet and gain some respite from the wind for half a km.

Coming back into the village now at 15K and I’m finally sheltered from the wind. I decide to finish strong and take off running down a single track road next to the river. It has newly laid tarmac and is a joy to run on! I finish running and stop to catch my breath. I’ve done it! Another 10 mile run! Back in the house, I’m surprised to see that the splits, although ebbing and flowing slightly, were really neat and tidy. I didn’t expect to achieve negative splits on this run, but did it anyway and the last km was the fastest. My battle with the wind is surprisingly not reflected in the split times and I also have 2 PBs for 10 miles and 15K πŸ₯°

Such a sense of achievement to run for 10 miles! I earned my porridge this morning! πŸ₯£

First km the slowest at 9:16. Last km the fastest at 7:13.

Wow awesome run, well done you. I felt tired reading that, running into headwind is the worst! But 10 miles in those conditions, you’re a Wonder Woman and very inspirational! Happy running πŸƒπŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ…

Thank you πŸ™ Not sure if I feel like a Wonder Woman right now, but I’m not feeling the effects as much as the last run, so it’s definitely getting easier! πŸ‘πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Good hard windy run for you today Jools2020, that sofa was so tempting but you kept on running, well done, it is indeed a sense of achievement to run for 10 miles, I have only ran that distance once, I am sure you enjoyed that well deserved porridge when you got home. 😊 πŸƒπŸΎ

A great run Jools , especially into the headwind on the way back , but no doubt counteracted by your tailwind drink haha πŸ˜‚Oh, and those splits look good to me ! .

So will you ride the same route on your bike next week ? 😁

Thanks, Ian! πŸ˜‚

Although those roads are fairly quiet, I don’t think the world is ready for me and my bike! I’ll stick to off road for the time being 😬

Great stuff! It’s hard work when it’s windy but you’ll find becalmed runs much easier. Swings and roundabouts this running lark πŸ˜ƒ

Farmer’s fields are a workout in themselves so well done πŸ’ͺπŸ™‚

Fantastic Jools! You are really smashing it! 6k into a headwind - and you still manage nice tidy negative splits. You are a natural! I felt exhausted just reading that!I had bacon butty this morning, but sadly no run. I must get out there tomorrow

Jools2020 profile image
Jools2020Half Marathon in reply to Birdlady64

Thanks, Diane. I was going to try and extend this run by a couple of kilometres, but decided against it after battling the headwind. I’ll only push on it it feels right and today was not the day.

I think it might have been you that got me onto Saturday bacon butties πŸ˜€

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64 in reply to Jools2020

Yeah - I had them after my 10k run. I don't have them every Saturday - honest! You're right - it makes no sense to push on if you're not feeling it

It was a good run πŸ‘. Even the car drivers were considerate. On the main road I was battling the headwind and watching the traffic (no paths) and I didn’t have to jump in the hedge once πŸ˜€

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRun10 Miles in reply to Jools2020

That was really lucky, I find if you have to jump out the way of a car or person it messes up with the pace and yours was good and steady, those bacon buttys sound delicious too

What a run, I was running it with you reading the post. It’s amazing sometimes when you look at times and think how did that happen and then the joy of PB’s to boot. Great run well done πŸ‘πŸ˜€πŸ‘

Thank you - I hope you weren’t as tired as I was! πŸ˜‚ I didn’t do much else yesterday, apart from putting some calories back in! I was surprised to see the PBs, but very happy about it. Another tick for the over 60s 😊

I mean, you've got to be chuffed with the whole thing. So much to take from here. Really good distance and some PB's too. I've found when running in the wind that if it's clear ahead then I move my neck so my face is at the side and it gives respite a bit at a time. Well done too for a strong finish. This is important I feel.

I am so pleased with this run! I felt I was refining what I have learned lately, especially with the ebbing and flowing - that was key with this run. Every run will throw up its challenges that have to be dealt with, this one was the wind. I had originally intended to extend the run by a couple of kms on the way to a HM, but decided not to because of the extra effort running into a headwind. I’ll know when the time is right! Thanks for your insights. πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘
