When the mind takes over sleep!

Does anyone else lie in bed 🛌 and plan their next route to achieve the next part of the plan? I would have preferred to have slept as the plan the next morning was to get to 18k!

I was wrestling with the thought that I had just managed to squeeze the 17k in by adding a cheeky .5k around the Baptist church and back on to the canal for a short distance before joining the road for home and the 5minute warm down.

My mind was going round and round when the thought came to me don’t do the add on or join the road for home use that 1.5k to get me further up the canal as the stumbling block had been there are only a few places to get off the canal.

The only thing is I’d never ran up that part of the canal due to the 6 locks, oh the elevation.

So the decision made I did get back to sleep 🛏 and yes I followed through my plan yesterday morning as well as taking the very small 4 pieces of home made

flapjack with me for the first time for sustenance (not a guilty pleasure - really after 5months of a 1500 cal a day!) - thank you for the tip here it really helped after last week.

The plan came into place I ran the canal came off at the Parish church and ran down hill all the way to hear Strava announce 18k yessssss my longest ever run,🏃🏻‍♀️so far. The great thing is now I can see how I’m going to reach 19.5k then 21.1k- that’s the plan, I can now sleep 😴 easy for the next 2 weeks.

Blimey. It is not often I can't get words out! But your progress 🥇😮

I love that you are enjoying and embracing the long run. I do think of runs at night especially before a big one. You're preparing fantastically for your HM which you will do. You really are a bit too awesome!!

Haha! yes! I frequently lie in bed plotting routes or planning how and when I need to eat/work/etc. to fit my run in! Then there are the times I wake up and realise I've been dreaming about runs ... obsessed? maybe, just a little 😅. 18k is fantastic - as you say there isn't much more to go to that HM. I reckon the hardest thing for you will be stopping at 19.5🤔 Good luck, have fun and bask in a bit of well deserved smugness😊

Thank you linda9389 good to hear how you plan too. I really had to think about the last few kilometres to make sure I don’t hopefully do anything silly at this stage. Thank you for your support and encouragement, when I finally get there we can all enjoy the moment 🥂

Fantastic Over62! Wow, such a great run and soooo close to HM distance! You’ll be there before you know it. 👊🏃‍♀️

I had to force myself at that stage not to go for the full distance, I could almost touch it! But sticking to plans is good and helps reduce injury risk. I did go from 19-21.1k though ..... 😈😅 Tell no-one! 😅

wow 18k is amazing!! So close to a the hm distance too!

May I ask how long it took you to get to this distance? Just I'm currently at the stage where my long run 11 / 12k, and my training plan tells me I should be running an 18k in a little less than a month!! Which I must say seems a little daunting right now.

Thank you a_in_gsr what a good question I was doing about 11k 3 months ago and I have been gradually building the distance up on my long run of the week since then, I found the breakthrough on to this stage when I was prompted by grannyhugs at around 14/5k that 16.1 was 10 miles so that became my goal to increase the distance, I didn’t really have a plan at that stage as I thought I had reached my maximum, so it became a milestone for me and since then I have been increasing gently each week and of course the HM has become the goal. The encouragement on here has been fantastic and I would urge you to post on here as often as you can it is truly supportive.

Hope that helps

Happy running this next stage🏃🏻‍♀️

thank you so much for all the info!! Hmm having little goals definitely has spurred me on in the past so 10 miles is definitely step 1 to aim for :)

Fantastic! 18k is well within HM range. Well done on exploring a bit further and getting over those locks. Yes you are not the only one obsessing over your next run 😁.

Amazing Over62. 18k run so now you know your not far off that HM distance.

Sometimes when I go to bed I do think about the route I will run the next day and then you get today . I was going out for a 5k and and the last minute changed it to 10k , ended up at 13k.

Congratulations and well done👏👏

Thank you Buddy34 - wow that’s a flexible mind plan! The nearest I’ve come to that is going from a 7k to a 10k!

Oh yes! In fact some nights I can’t get to sleep because my head is all over the place deciding which route to take the next day 🤔

But your run sounds fab. Well done on the 18K 💪🙂 and your plan for getting some shut-eye 😴

Thank you Irishprincess, great to know I’m not alone at route planning in bed!

Hi Over62 yes I’m guilty of lying in bed plotting out routes, particularly when I’ve got longer runs planned. I normally plan a route that’s longer than I need, but I have had the occasional long run when I’ve run around the block or up and down the road a few times to make sure I’ve done the distance!🤣

Thank heavens for Garmin and all the other electronic wizardry out there to tell us how far we’ve gone!😊

I agree David_G It’s funny sometimes how completing a K arrives sooner than you think and conversely you’re thinking I must have completed that K by now! Thank goodness for the technology!

Well done! It's fun to plan routes and then go out and get them! I keep a notepad and pen by the side of the bed and mentally trace my steps, then write them down or I forget by morning. I've been doing that with marathon routes.

When you get out there you can tweak as you like.
