Brighton virtual 10k aka โ€œBM10k [TheEdit]โ€ run report

What a lovely day for a race ๐Ÿ˜€

I ran the BM10km virtual race on Sunday with my son Dan. We were both running for the Brighton based charity called Speak Out which is an advocacy charity for people with learning disabilities.

The weather was perfect for running 13 degrees, sunny intervals, with a 12 knot NNW wind which shifted to a headwind for a kilometre or two. But Iโ€™m not complaining ๐Ÿ˜‚

I recalled roseabi saying the gummy bears in the pack were hard to swallow on the run so Dan I stuffed a packet each down at the start line before we set off and I can confirm they were lovely but really chewy. ๐Ÿ˜‚

It was lovely to be accompanied on the run as we both supported each other, chatted, and stayed together till 7k when Dan told me to push on as he was happy with the pace he was at.

I had an energy gel at 5k which we covered in 26 minutes which was just a little behind the target of 25 but we both felt good at 5.00km pace at that point and knew we could pick it up. So the plan was to pick it up a little for the next 2 k and then gun it for the last 3. The second 5k was completed in 22.39 which amazingly is the same time as my 5k PB! Not sure how that works tbh ๐Ÿค”

The course itself was a straight run along the sea front from Bexhill to Hastings old town but neither of us had checked the route prior to the run. ๐Ÿ™„ This meant that for some stretches it was very pebbly and slippy to run on and there were 3 not insignificant hills, the last of which was the final 200 metres.

That final km was a nightmare tbh as the sun had brought everyone out for a Sunday stroll. Loads of folk munching their fish n chips and 99 flakes as they strolled along strewn across the path. I had to be super sharp here and, a bit like driving a car, I was continuously eyeing up potential lane wanderers, and other hazards until one dog decided to pull away from its owner right as I was approaching and the only thing left I could do was hurdle the lead, which was a mighty relief, as if Iโ€™d caught it, one, or all 3 of us, were going down.! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Still, even with the hazards and that final hill I managed to run that last km in 4.13. Final time was 48.39 a new PB and finally I am under 50 minutes ๐Ÿฅณ

Dan ended up just behind me in the end finishing in just under 50 minutes. Iโ€™m sure he would have been closer if he was feeling 100% that morning. Mind you, serves him right for overdoing it the night before ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™„. Oh to be young again. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Met up with my daughter in law and my gorgeous grandson and spent the next hour in the play park at the sea front. Spent the day today on Grandad duties but weirdly nothing hurts?? Maybe tomorrow? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Sorry Iโ€™ve rambled on so much and well done if you got this far ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜Š

Happy running all. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜ƒ

What a speedy team Brian! Those are seriously great times and I bet youโ€™re both over the moon - I canโ€™t start to imagine how quick your son would have been if heโ€™d been in top form. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Iโ€™m so relieved the dog lead hurdling ended well. The alternative would have been carnage! ๐Ÿ˜…

A great inspiring run report and wonderful happy photos! Really well done! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

Awesome thank you Buddy34 ๐Ÿ˜Š Itโ€™s awesome when all the training finally starts to pay off. There have been some quite dark days when Iโ€™ve battled hard with the gremlins.

Oh yes the battles are real. But I've always said if it was easy that feeling of achievement wouldn't be the same. I tell myself that anyway ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘

Thank you so much Irishprincess ๐Ÿ˜Š I will be going to sleep reliving it for a few more weeks to come for sure. And as you say it is one for the memory bank to be called upon during any bad days that might lie ahead.

Fabulous Brian, well done! Youโ€™re very speedy! Great pics too, sounds like a lovely day, always makes me laugh when thereโ€™s a bit of unscheduled hurdling involved! (This wasnโ€™t in the course description......๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‚)

Iโ€™m not overly tolerant of dodging unpredictable wanderers though! Mind you as a virtual event I suppose you have to be prepared for that...๐Ÿ˜‚.....Iโ€™m sure I did at least half the distance again when I did an event where walkers and runners were all mixed in together, and some groups of walkers blocked the whole width of the route!

Great stuff!

Thank you Madge50 ๐Ÿ˜Š I guess itโ€™s the peril we must face in these times now that there arenโ€™t any official races. It was nice that people were out and about enjoying the weather and we really should have planned it better perhaps leaving much earlier in the morning. Still no harm done and a great run and day.

Wow! that's amazing, but could all have ended so differently ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

At those speeds I imagined a pristine clear track with no wind to contend with; it sounds more like an obstacle course! Just amazing times!!! But sharing it with your son - best bit of all ๐Ÿ˜Š A great read ๐Ÿ‘

Itโ€™s hard to believe isnโ€™t it that I was being helped to cross a road by a kind old man and weeping in pain on the pavement at one point in February. Bodies are amazing things if you care for them properly.

Great photos Brian and how lovely to run with your son!๐Ÿ™‚ Congratulations to both of you - and I am seriously impressed by your amazing time!๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ… 8th place on the leader board is not a place I am ever likely to find my name!๐Ÿ˜‚ Just - Wow!๐Ÿ™‚

Not heard of Speak Out - but having worked with people with learning disabilities in the past (and having acted as an advocate too) sounds like a great cause.๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you for your lovely reply Sandraj39 ๐Ÿ˜Š I was so happy to be running with my son for the first time. We are like really good friends and not son and father tbh.

Yes Speak Out is a tiny charity but as you say it is a great cause as advocacy is so important for these people. I didnโ€™t raise very much money at all but it all counts in these times.
