Running my first 10 miler later today. What should I fuel up on beforehand?

Proper Porridge oats (made with water) with some peanut butter stirred in Once it’s cooked

I had porridge for breakfast and coffee with some biscuits too when I ran 10 miles yesterday. Waited 90 mins then ran. Hydrate well but not too near the run! Good luck and go steady all the way 😊

I run as early as I can, so a banana and a cup of tea is adequate for me. I take along plain water and some with Tailwind (a nutrition powder) in, plus some jelly babies. Any later, I’d probably have a small bowl of porridge more than 2 hours beforehand.

Good luck. 😀

Cup of coffee does me fine. The main thing is not to make any radical changes to routine. Your body will adapt if you give it time. If you think you need more fuel try small changes and see what works.

I too usually eat a bowl of porridge an hour and a half before. If you're running later in the day, just make sure it's at least an hour and a half since eating a meal. You may want something small to nibble during the run - jelly babies or a small snack bar would be fine - but you might not need anything. Try to keep to your normal routine.

For me it was my normal breakfast bowl of granola about an hour or so beforehand, with an extra glass of water. But it obviously depends when you’re going to run. I often run at different times of day. If I’d been doing 10 miles in the evening I expect I’d have thought more carefully about it and might well have resorted to a cereal snack and some fruit.

How did it go??

Thanks for asking. It was a beautiful afternoon and by sheer doggedness I got round in about 1h52mins. I was fuelled by my oat & apple pancake breakfast and pasta & chicken lunch. I drank plenty before I went and took a gel which I had after an hour running.

I can’t say it was easy but I’ve entered the virtual GNR on 13th September, and after breaking my little toe a month ago needed to get in a long run. My training and build up had been going really well, but I’ve only done a 4K and 5k in the last couple of weeks. Consequently I ache a bit this evening!
