Half marathon training plan?

Hello,

I am nervous posting here because I'm *so far* away from a marathon. But...since a half marathon is closer, I would like to set myself that goal.

I have done a few 10kms over the past few months - but not all that easily. I'm struggling at the end and have not tried to push much beyond 11km. But, 10km is halfway to a half marathon and I'm wondering if someone can point me towards a good half marathon training plan.

Any suggestions to making my 10km more manageable would be appreciated and how to extend that 10km to the next 10km would be fantastic!

You could increase by 1 Kilometre a fortnight with a few shorter runs, ie a 5K in between the longer runs, that's what I did from 5K to 10K and might in the future regarding running longer than the 10K distance, always drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, you might get running further. 😊 🏃🏾

Firstly a very warm welcome to the forum! No need for nerves - we're very friendly. Most of us landed here with 10k under our belts - it's the perfect position to consider a half marathon from. I loved my journey from 10k to HM and find HM a very rewarding distance (I'm sure a marathon is too far for me!).

I’d agree with both AlMoor and linda9389. A gentle build up from 10k to half marathon distance is the way to go. Take your time, don’t rush to get there and let things happen as they will. You’ll get there I’m sure!🙂

Don’t worry about coming back here for any advice and support you need. We’re all either on our way to half marathon, marathon or other longer distances, or we’ve already got there!🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

Many of us will have come up through Couch to 5K and know how tough it can seem from time to time, so don’t worry about asking for help if you need it. Good luck!🤞

Welcome! There are lots of training plans out there - have a look at a few and take your pick depending on which suits you, how many runs a week etc. I built up to a 10 miler first and then trained for a Half. I continued to extend my weekend long run and then also lengthened my shorter runs a bit, I think, to increase my overall weekly mileage. I looked at several training plans and then pulled together my own based on these. Sadly, I'm not runnning anywhere near that distance at the moment 😲 but I do hope to again, as fitness/niggles allows!As for making 10k feel easier? I think a good regular running routine helps (sometimes easier said than done!)

Bienvenue. I have become a big fan of run/walk to build up endurance or time on my feet. Started out with a 2/1 ratio and built from there. Good Luck with your training.

Like everyone else who’s already replied, I’m going to reiterate that there’s no need to be nervous about your foray into your HM training. 👍 This forum is super friendly and will give you all the advice you’ll need along the way. 😀

One thing I would say is if I can do it (twice so far), you definitely can! Good luck and have fun. 👏👏

Gently building up distance is lovely. One of the best things in life is heading out for a slow run I can’t recommend it more.

Enjoy the process. Stop to drink, eat, take in the view, take photos. It’s fab 🙂👍

Thank you so much, everyone! Very much appreciate all the support and advice. I checked out some of the suggestions and I've decided to go with the NRC Half Marathon plan - since i use the NRC app already.

It is a slow 14 week build up but I may take it very slowly, as I find it hard to run in warmer weather. So, I may keep running and then start to "do" the plan in the autumn. Even going out at 6.00am results in my dripping in sweat and feeling very uncomfortable.
