With a bit of training and you having already ran a HM in 2.30 I think you could run a marathon in around 5.30, just take the training the way you trained for your HM.
Personally I would worry less about getting a good time and just really considering about whether you have capacity to get the training in. You will see from all the plans out there that its a lot of time on your feet running. Fab if you have a life that can accomodate that, more tricky if not..... have a look at some plans and see if you can work out how it could be done, and focus on the enjoyment side of things...
Looking at what you've achieved up to now I think you could do it.
Great just not 100% yet but I am putting alot of thought into it just need the right plan let me know if you find a good plan cheers
You’re smart thinking it through thoroughly Paul. I’m sure you could do it as you’ve always succeeded in the past. But 26 miles is a looooooong way. When I ran my HM distance in September, there was no way on this planet that I could have run a other 1k, let alone 13k more!
Good luck making your decision! 👍
I’m finding it hard to find the time to fit in the runs needed for my marathon training plan. For example this morning before work I need to do 10k, I do 5k at lunchtime yesterday, 10k on Wednesday lunchtime and 9k Tuesday evening. Tomorrow I need to do at least 16k and should aim for 50k this week.
On the plus side, the increase in volume has improved my endurance- I can do two 10 mile runs two days apart and not feel exhausted.
But the programme is relentless and I’ve not even got into the increasing intensity stage yet. Finding the time is very hard. Good luck!
You can definitely do it - I also think a time of 5-5:30 should be doable, and shouldn't take much more than 5-6 hours per week at peak training.
I'm not very good at intervals, so my general plan when training for a long race is 4-5 sessions per week. I generally have one long run, which increases by 2 km every week, a medium long run at the weekend which is half the distance of my long run, then 2 or 3 5ks the other days. One of them is parkrun, where I try to get some speed in.
At the moment I do 7mile Monday 5 mile wensday and park run call it 15miles aweek I was thinking doing 10miles Monday and 10miles wensday and then park run for a while then increase the mondays run each week keep the other 2 at 10mile and park run each week dont know if that's ok what do you think
I'm planning to do a Marathon in May. It's my first Marathon too (I'm 63). Like you, I ran a HM, and finished in 2:40 (with plenty of stops and time to chat). I'd only trained for 4 weeks, going from 10k to HM. Not recommended. I used the Jeffing method and it worked well.
Apply anyway. You can always bail out later- lots of people do. You can sometimes transfer to another race, or sell your place.
I've entered on this basis. Yes, risking £40, but my thinking is it will motivate me to do something, rather than thinking about it 😜
I like the BUPA marathon plan, as there are three rest days and three days running. It looks more do-able than others.
Good luck!
You sound and do just like me you can get in runs for free if you run for a charity they get you a free place on the understanding you raise some money for them which is not to bad I did not do that much training for the hm but it was ok the last mile I thought was hard and then thinking just another 13 miles to go sounds like hell but I would really like to do for my 60th it's a hard decision but am sure I will make the right one just that training inbetween sounds harder lol
