Marathon training

I have currently lost my mojo and I need to get out more often. This morning I was supposed to do 9 miles with my club but I couldn't get out and I have not run for a week.

Although the last time I ran it was a 10 mile Trail run, but I really need to be more disaplined. I can run half marathon distance reasonably easily, I have done 5 official halfs now at between 2.14.34 and 2.18 but I have yet to go beyond that has anyone got any tips to help me get out more often, as I really know I need to step it up? I have 4 months until the big day.

Oh that's tough, it's a hard time of year to be looking for motivation! Could you sign up for some virtual distance challenges? Last year I did 12 monthly ones that fit together so I never wanted to miss one out. I've seen one for 2020 where the 12 monthly medals fit into a frame. Something like that may help motivate you to keep the distance up? We're definitely all here cheering you on 😍

In my experience you need to work out when you can go out, what time you can allocate each week to your training outside of work, family etc. To train for a marathon requires commitment to getting out and doing the miles. Starting from 10 miles or hm means you have time to increase from there to 20 miles in 4 months. I was getting out running three times a week, a 4.5 mile run with intervals or hills, a 6-7 mile run and a long slow weekend run. Every four or five weeks I cutback. I did some strength training too but didn't manage much cross training. So in your case I would work out a progressively longer distance plan that you can tailor to the commitment that you can give to it.

Sorry to hear you’re struggling, I don’t think the short days help at this time of year. If it’s any consolation I felt the same yesterday morning, made myself go with my trail group and I was so glad I did. Perhaps try some cross training and/or swimming - it all counts as prep. Mostly, be kind to yourself and don’t feel guilty, I’m sure lots of us can relate to your post and know we’re all willing you on via cyber space!! 👍👏👍

Its hard to maintain motivation, especially at this time of year. I just put together a plan then make myself stick to it. There are plenty of gremlins trying yo invade my mind with great reasons not to run just before I step out. I have learn to ignore them.

Sometimes I'm less enthusiastic about running then others but I have learn to accept this ebb. I have also learned to accept that the only time I dont feel like running is just before I am due to run.

However, the benefits are only felt after a run, and I have never regretted going for a run afterwards, but I have always regretted the decision not to.

Your in a lull, but you wont remeber how good runningfeels unless you force yourself to do it.

Not what you're looking for?
