Is 8 months enough time to train for a half marathon?

Hello all :)

I started running in June and can now run about 7k without much hassle and I love it so much.

I’ve just seen an ad for the Hackney half which is in May next year and I would really love to run it.

It’s 8 months away and I will be able to run a 10k by christmas but a half is a completely different and rather scary thing for me!

Do you think I’m pushing myself and having too big of a dream or do you think I could do it?

I look forward to hearing from you!

A :)

I started C25K in December and am doing the Great Scottish Run tomorrow. So, that was 9 months to go from nothing to 21k. You’ll probably be more than ready for it. Good luck in your training - take a look at the pinned posts regarding upping your distance.

Plenty of time, there are loads of training plans that are much shorter. Just make sure you increase gradually to avoid injury 👊🏽

Hi Honestrunner. I think it’s enough time if you take it steadily. I am training for a HM in March and just building up distance steadily each month. I have allowed 7 months to get to that point. It can probably be done a lot quicker but I am trying to limit injury opportunities.

Good luck!

Sounds absolutely doable! Maybe there will be a spring HM group starting here at the end of this Year. It's a fun way to do the training if there is. Good luck, and enjoy :)

Tons of time. You are fine. You could train the whole thing twice if you wanted 🙂

You can definitely do it! Pick a training plan that works for with regards to number of runs per week and stick to it as best you can (life will get in the way!). I’ve just completed my first half marathon (14 months after graduating C25K) and followed a Runners World plan that gave me loads of confidence going into the race ... and got me round in a time I’m really proud of! Go for it!!

Go for it! I graduated C25k last July, did my first HM two weeks ago.

Find a training plan you like and go for it! I used the Galloway method (run/walk/run), and it really worked for me. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Unanimous support for your plan. Most HM training plans are around 12 weeks, but they would expect you to have a decent base level. Getting to 10k by Christmas and just enjoying a couple of months consolidating this will work well for your stamina.

Having a longer time to build up will prevent you overdoing things and will give your body plenty of time to build and therefore prevent any injuries from pushinr your body too far too soon.
