HM training week12 day5

1hr 50mins in zone 2. Only 10.5k and I’m beyond knackered! Left leg (the dodgy one) hurts from hip to ankle and the gammy knee is swollen. Icing it and will miss my next run and rest it if it isn’t better by Tuesday. Honestly, digging deep is an understatement! Roll on the end of the month and tapering. I missed the rain though : chucking it down now. My zone chart isn’t too bad, just a couple of spikes and 12 minutes altogether in zone 3.

Mummycav beefcake alert Bev! One bloke running went thundering past me stripped to the waist, manly chest tanned the colour of a conker!

Seems that you have had a bad run today Flick, between left leg and your gammy knee being swollen, this mornings run was bad, you will need to give yourself a few extra days off running, you admit that you are "beyond knackered", running is to be enjoyed, at the moment you are punishing yourself and not enjoying it, I certainly think you should have at least 3 days off.

in reply toAlMorr

That did make me laugh. I’m in training! I still enjoy the runs, even if I am having a good old whinge 😊. Judging by what others are saying on Strava, a lot of people at my stage are finding it tiring and tough. That’s why tapering begins soon after this stage. This leg and knee have been doing this on and off since I was 19 and had the road traffic accident that caused it, so I don’t take it as seriously as somebody with a sound leg - but if I need to rest it, I will, don’t worry lovely Alan x

Thanks for that information Flick, you don't seem to mind too much about your leg, sorry about that traffic accident when you were 19.

in reply toAlMorr

Honestly, there’s not much I can do about it. If I took time off every time it did this, I wouldn’t be able to live my life. Anyway, rest day tomorrow, and I don’t have to do anything else today x

And where is the photo of said conker-coloured-chest man? Maybe next time 😂😂

Sorry to hear about the swollen knee Flick, maybe a few days' rest and lots of icing will work magic. I'm a big believer in rest and it sounds as if you're in dire need of some. I'm sure with the training you've done so far you'll be fine for the HM. All that adrenaline will get you through 🙂

And lovely photos again 🙂

in reply toIrishprincess

Alas, he went by too fast for me to whip out my phone😂

The knee is going down already. It just does this because I fractured my femur and split it to the bone when I was 19. If it’s bad on Tuesday I won’t run, but honestly it usually settles down again pretty fast - unless I’ve really punished it like I did early this year with moving house.. I really want to finish the training if I can as it’s working so well for me. We shall see. I shall stop moaning because everybody is going into nurse mode 😀

You're not moaning, just sharing 🙂

It’s true really. I post the training runs because I hope they will be useful to somebody, and people have said they find them interesting. They show a journey, and I think they will be useful to me too when I look back over them xxx

I’ve checked the photos Flick and where is the beefcake one please?

in reply tolimberlou

Haha sorry about that- he was too fast for me, gone by in a flash before my hand even reached the pouch my phone was in! Next time 😂😍😍

Aw that sounds tough Flick 😘 🤞🏻 crossed it toes the line soon.

I've ordered my buddy pouch 👍🏻😁

Strangely I still enjoyed it, even though I spent the first half wanting to go home and the last third almost hobbling. It really is true that there’s no such thing as a bad run.

I hope you enjoy your buddy pouch. I’m really pleased with mine 😍

Woo hoo Hidden ...even though you had painful knees today, this is a good run, you are amazing me every time you’re out!! There has been a noticeable lack of beefcakes this year on my runs...infact, I haven’t seen one that was worth a mention so reading your post gives me hope...it might not just be the squirrels that are making more of an appearance in this part of the year, maybe the beefcakes get too hot in the sun so they’ve been waiting for the cooler days and chance of a shower?! Now, where’s my trainers?.....🏃🏼‍♀️👀🏋🏼‍♂️💪🏻

in reply toMummycav

There were loads of male runners here today. You should come and stay with me and run in Abingdon. Not the slightest whiff of Lynx either!

Lol...now there’s an offer that’s hard to refuse! Staying with you would be a dream...but beefcake spotting with you? Well, what could possibly beat that?!!!!! X

in reply toMummycav

We must do it! We could run round saying phwoar, though I would probably get arrested as most of them were young enough to be my grandchildren 😂😂😂 though not the conker chested one, he was at least 35 x

I was dodging conkers on the floor today...but no beefcake to distract me. Lots of gorgeous dogs though !

I find your runs very interesting, please keep posting : )

in reply tobackintime

Hope the knee settles down Flick ( good luck with the icing). So near the taper now - I am sure it will all be worth it! Beautiful photos, as usual, too! 🙂x

in reply toSandraj39

Thank you. Knee still a bit puffy today, but it's a rest day, so here's hoping!

I’m just so impressed you stayed in zone 2 for so long!! My son 30 years my junior! Gets a very painful swollen knee when he runs at my pace. Which he needs to do the HM distance really. But staying in the low zones I’m finding impossible if I can stay in 4 I feel good zone 2 is walking for me. Is it age or lack of experience or what? My resting HR is 52 my running rate is 170!! Every time no matter what I do!!!!

in reply toCandyCool

it's the zone 2 running thats bothering the knee. My resting and max heart rates are around the same as yours (Im 72, so that's weird). I have to keep walking when i stop running to avoid fainting as the HR makes its enormous drop!

CandyCool profile image
CandyCoolMarathon in reply to

I’m 62 so that’s not so strange HR wise. At 72 having an annoying knee is probably quite possibly 🤔🥰

in reply toCandyCool

I’ve had that knee and it’s annoyance since I was 19. Running has improved it, but it still catches me out 😳

Stoozie profile image

Do you find you have to run 'strangely' to keep the HR low enough Hidden ?

in reply toStoozie

Not now because I’ve speeded up in the lower zones, but I looked like a Monty Python sketch when I first started doing it. Also be aware that most people use the 220 minus age formula to set heart rate, and it’s far too low!

Anyone who attempts HM has my greatest respect. It is so much harder than the journey to 10k. You have a lot more running experience than me but on extending my distance to 10 miles I have been getting some knee niggles and last week got to see a physio. He got me to do certain actions and it was quite clear where weakness was and what needed to be done to strengthen and stop further damage. My ITB is the problem, although not full blown at this stage. He said that to run through it could take me to a stage where I had to stop running for 6 months or more. He said it was good that I saw him when I did as I am not even at the stage of inflammation.

I know you think this pain is linked to your old injury, just as I did to begin with, but if you haven’t done so already it may be worth seeking physio advice. The ITB is very much hip to ankle.

Hopefully, you don’t think this is me in nursemaid mode but maybe my recent experience and the advice I’ve been given will be useful for others on the forum, if not you.

Lovely to see your photos again, and various sightings (😉). I look forward to reading your HM post and then a return to those happy carefree posts that inspired me when I was on c25k .

in reply toDexy5

I can’t afford a physio. However, my GP suggested an MRI to see what’s going on inside the knee as I’ve had this specific pain since falling off a ladder eight years ago. I have to refer myself and didn’t want to till after the HM. The jury is out on whether I will manage the race. I could have done in the summer, but I’m less energised now and the knee is an unknown
