Happy new week, and new month!!! Where is this year going? ๐ฎ๐
Speaking of new things, I have just invested in my VERY FIRST GARMIN! Scream!!! Never had a running watch before, and I couldn't resist going out for an unscheduled 3 km run to try it out when it arrived on Friday ๐๐๐
But gosh it was hot!! Last week I once again pulled from the wardrobe a set of three little summer dresses I must have had for at least 10 years. They are made of hydrocarbons and I suppose they'll last forever - so I may as well carry on wearing them every summer!
Have you tried something new recently? Or broken out the tried and true? ๐
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!
If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Well done getting the Garmin. Prepare to be amazed and awash with stats!
Iโm starting to get Ultra envy. I watched some of the live stream of the Mont Blanc marathon and, although me and that terrain just wouldnโt get on, it has made me contemplate some day long running. I know Iโm still to weak in the core to pull that off but itโs a thought thatโs just going to niggle away at me.
Iโve got a fairly full Autumn of trail running ahead but I might aim for a marathon or an Ultra in 2020.
I recommend the Beachy Head Marathon! It's like a mini ultramarathon with some serious hills - but the terrain is mostly nice and soft, the support is great, and it has a very generous 9 hour cut off time ๐๐๐
Got my first training run for Beachy next Tuesday. I haven't entered yet as I need to check if the challenge is something I'll enjoy before I commit! x
Hi Roseabi's. At the other end of the scale to everyone else, I have now completed 10, 11 and 12ks over the past three weeks on the way up to my target of a 10 miler. I ran the latter two on a very hilly holiday island, so when the travel fatigue (sitting around on a boat and trains) disappears I ought to be good to go for the next phase. This week has designated "strength training" on your plan rather than a 13k plus run. I guess this is to avoid too much new distance running on ill prepared legs. I do strength exercises daily anyway, so am tempted to just carry on with the long runs....unless you are really saying that a week off at this stage is a good idea anyway? Good luck with the Garmin! I would be lost without mine...I waste/invest loads of time looking at the data and it has really influenced the way I run....stride length, pace and average heart rate in particular. ๐๐
The reason why there is not a long run every week of the plan is to allow for more than one day of rest between the non-optional runs.
Btw, I made a few small edits to the plan - have changed the name of the "Pace" run to make it clearer, and have added some more info about pacing in the notes:
Ooh, feel better soon. I read about the Garmin/ strava isssues yesterday, but my ride synced ok last night at about 7pm, and a workout this morning. Maybe it's fixed now, or maybe it just didn't affect everyone? Hope yours is fixed now.
I saw there was a known issue with Garmin syncing to Strava yesterday - I was affected, but it got there eventually. I was glad I found out about it though, because it didn't seem like the best start to my Running Watch Era ๐
Morning everyone! I donโt have one yet, but I sense one in my future - but I was sitting next to a lovely lady on the Park and Ride bus back to my car after running the Bristol 10k Race for Life yesterday (posted about it on B210K if you need help getting to sleep ๐ด), and she was proudly showing me her hydration vest.
It was made by Aonijie, Iโd never heard of it, but she said it was awesome. Anyone have one, or are there better ones out there you could recommend. I see thereโs an Amazon Prime sale coming up soon ...... oops! ๐
It is a value brand but an excellent starter. I opted for the Salomon Agile set 2 which is pricier but use it all the time now. It doesn't have a rear bladder but I bought a cheap one online that actually fits in the rear pouch so I can easily carry 2ltr. Bear in mind all that extra weight adds to strenght training too!! ๐คฃ
The only thing new for me is trying one of the 'Headspace' runs on Nike run Club yesterday. I'd recommend them every now and again, particularly when things get stressful.
I've got a fairly quiet week running-wise this week, with just a 'Pace 5-10K' planned tomorrow, then a 5K at Bognor Parkrun on Saturday. After that I'm off to hopefully sunny Weymouth for a couple of days, taking in a steam fair (traction engines and other boy's toys I'm afraid!) then back home and running again next Monday.
I have a Garmin but stats gal I ainโt ๐. Hence I have the most basic model. Is yours all bells and whistles? Have fun with it. I am on Garmin connect We have a C25k group on there
Running going ok, my half mara was cancelled yesterday โน๏ธ But I got plenty of exercise done anyway
I have a ten mile race next Sunday so training carries on. Off in a minute for a jog ๐โโ๏ธ
Have a good week folks ๐๐๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
Me and my Garmin have had a falling out this morning. It ran out of battery 19km into my run, after having been left charging for hours. Itโs now saying itโs 100% charged after being plugged in for less than 2 hours. ๐ค Iโm suspicious that something might be going awry with the deeply annoying charge point on the back of the watch and/or the battery. Cโmon Garmin, itโs 2019 - just put a micro USB port on the bloody thing.
Apart from that, the run felt really good today. Not too hot really and I could have carried on going.
Wow Abi, that is a big shift for you! I am amazed youโve managed without one given all your experience. I suspect youโll enjoy it. More data!
Itโs been business as usual for me. Still trying to maintain my distances on the local trails. The new Kinvaras are solid shoes and on the nearby track they do feel quite fast. Its been very hot here lately so harder to snag any pbs. I did get a new hydration vest and have posted about it to help anyone looking to decide on one. I just need to figure out how to fully dry the massive drink straw it comes with ๐. Have a shorter trail race in late coming up in late July too which Iโm looking forward too. Today is Canada Day and a national holiday, with a tall ships event at harbourfront, so we will likely go and check that out today.
Stay cool and shady everyone, the heat there sounds intense! ๐
I have to say I am loving the extra data ๐๐๐
I actually plumped for a Garmin because my lovely Fitbit Versa died, and I didn't want to just get another one only to have the same thing happen. And I've a big birthday coming up, so...
Go-faster shoes - awesome!! Have a lovely Canada Day xxx
My daughter used to take our rabbit for a walk round the garden on a lead (it was a very big rabbit and too feisty to catch if it got away!) ๐ Hope you enjoy your garmin (despite your proven ability to run without numbers ๐).
Decidedly envious of everyone working thru their HM plans as I keep deleting scheduled runs from mine ๐คข Had my MRI yesterday, hopefully results this week. I'm desperate to put some numbers (๐คฉ) to the next few months so I can set some realistic expectations - always looking for a clearly defined goal. In the meantime I racked up - and enjoyed - over 300km of cycling in June (not bad progression from zero), and I'm now discovering the delights (?) of seated abs and cardio workouts ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ but maybe not enjoying that so much!
It does indeed! I feel like I'm taking back some control. Last week I managed to lose 1kg of the the weight I've put on since my last run - great positive reinforcement that will hopefully become the opposite of the downward spiral I had drifted into
I love my Garmin 35 Abi - except for its VO2 max calculations - I think it just randomly plucks numbers out of the air ๐
Was supposed to do 6x440m this morning with a target time of 2 mins per rep but it's too bloomin hot for that so went for a stroll instead. Am considering a long slow run tomorrow morning in place of speedwork to top up the tan ๐
My first (and currently only) VO2 max calculation makes me feel a little bit smug, but I'm going to try and ignore that particular number as much as possible ๐๐๐
My VO2 score was dire for ages - very sad after Fitbit had led me to believe I had a great score! Eventually I realised my DOB was wrong and Garmin thought I was about 25 years young and rather unfit for my age ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
I have next to no idea what the VO2 max thing is all about. But I do know that I donโt trust the Garmin as it usually appears to think Iโm a cyborg. ๐ค Hmm, you can tell all that from sitting on my wrist... right.... I think the truth might be slightly less impressive. Also, itโs dropped me down a couple of points lately so Iโm sulking!
Happy new Tech! ๐ can you work it yet? ๐คฃ๐
They are great but confusing at first!
Well I hit July's goal of a 20 miler yesterday so kinda messed up my plan but it does mean I'll continue to consolidate around the 19/20 mark. It was tough the last few miles so I want to get my body used to those kind of runs on a regular basis.
My original plan of being able to run to the Downs from my door has been perfect though and at 20 miles I get a good explore in too!
The worst bit was when it didn't want to hook up with the app at first, but now we're getting on fine! There sure is large collection of features - whew!!! ๐ ๐ฅ๐
My 735 had to go back unused after Christmas as the Bluetooth just wouldnโt work. The replacement has been fine though (apart from todayโs charging issue). Fingers crossed yours behaves itself.
Congrats on the Garmin and Birthday best wishes too! Iโm sure you will love the Fenix ๐! Iโm on week 3 of my marathon plan and also did my 2nd 5mile race on Friday. It was hot and hilly (like the last 1.5 miles was one big hill!) but I managed to come in within 2s of my first 5miler 3 weeks before ๐ so that was good.
Well done on the Garmin! I only have the most basic one but still love it!! I had a bit of a lazy running week last week but back on it last night with a jolly hilly run on the west wight, beautiful views and we saw a badger trundling around too! Night off tonight before some trail running on weds, possibly entering local 10k this Sunday but undecided yet! Xxx
Have decided against the 10k but instead have entered this for Sept, cos it's nearly sold out. My pal said it was his favourite run of 2018! it'll be my longest too!
Ooh, exciting new tech! Have fun with it! My Garmin is ancient but still plods along, bless it! I keep looking at all the stats everyone reports from their newer versions and I just know that i wouldn't know a) how to work them and b) what they all mean anyway
This week I will be packing, flapping and worrying - oh, and going for my first 11 or 12k for a while, on the HM plan
Congratulations on the new watch. I did quite fancy getting a watch for running and swimming, but have decided against it. Maybe next year. I have just forked out for a second hand sportive bike from Cranks. This is trying something new as I haven't ridden a racing type bike since the late 80s ๐คฃ going to take a while to get used to it. I've signed up for a Aquathon at pells pool. 300m swim and 3k run, never done that before, nervous about swimming in a group in a pool, but it looks like an inclusive event. Also signed up for a 10 mile mince pie run in December, exciting as it's on trails and road. And I believe there will be mince pies . My running has been a bit on the back burner recently, but I'm back on it and working my way up again, with cross training and strength work, this group is a great one for motivation and tips. Love to the runners ๐
Bike sounds interesting - looking forward to hearing more about it!
I have been thinking about signing up for one of those aquathlons - Pells Pool sounds amazing!! I did one at the King Alfred in Hove a couple of years ago and found it great fun, and not at all daunting (apart from rather a lot of waiting around!). That mince pie run sounds perfect ๐๐๐
I'm not an experienced swimmer, so it's out of my comfort zone. But for ยฃ7.50 is a mega bargain. I've not been to Pells pool yet so should be good , hopefully my run will make up for my slow swim ๐คฃ
Happy birthday Roseabi. Having signed up for the Great South Run with cheekychipmunks, I thought Iโd better join your quest now. Iโve just been extending the magic plan and have got to 12k so far. I think Sandie1961 and Beachcomber66 are virtually on the same journey with me, which is great.
I have enjoyed a planned running break, also known as a holiday with far too much to eat and drink, but I will return to running soon. I promise.
Happy birthday to you and enjoy your garmin. They are great. ๐ฐ ๐ ๐
I love my running watch, I've had it for about 4-5 years now. It's the most reliable thing I've ever bought, you just can't break it. I've jumped off cliffs into water, I've fallen onto rocks... it hasn't got a scratch on it. Love it.
Anyway...
๐ฌ My knees are hurting today! ๐ฒ๐ง๐ฉ *foreboding music* I'm used to a few pains, I've been running through them without any problems, but I haven't had it in my knees before. Slightly concerned because I'm very close to my 10k race and I really wanted to up the intensity in the next few weeks and then taper... Hopefully they'll be fine in a couple of days with some ice on them.
So I might be trying something new this month.. Swimming! Nice weather for it and I have an amazing outdoor 50 metre swimming pool close to me. You hear that knees!? You're not ruining my day, why can't you be more like my watch!?
Things are looking up. After several weeks of lower mileage than I'd hoped, and definitely short long runs, I managed a proper 14 km today. I kept thinking something was wrong, because my pace was way better than usual. I've now decided not to question it, and just be happy. It also turns out that it's my fastest long run in years. So much for my constant moaning that my running isn't what it used to be!
I'm going to do my first Norwegian parkrun outside Oslo this weekend. It's a 3.5 hour drive away, so we'll spend the night somewhere close by. The kids aren't thrilled, and my youngest made the wise move to volunteer instead.
Hi Roseabi and all you great people. Iโve had a poor start to my HM training last week. Managed 3 good runs from 2 Sundayโs ago to last Sunday. 25km in all but all on weekend days. No cross training or strength training.... I started a new job so struggled to get everything in sync. Hopefully things settle down and Iโm hoping to get some runs during lunch times soon. Weekday strength training might have to be done at home. No idea what to do as cross training yet.
Well done!! And congrats on the new job - hope it's going well?
Cross training - what do you enjoy doing? We tend to choose lower-impact activities (less of the jumping/hopping) to compliment the running: walking, swimming, cycling, yoga/pilates. You could make your strength work part of your cross training too - a lot of yoga poses work on strength, or there's good old fashioned gym workouts of course ๐
Cross training is not mandatory, just highly recommended ๐๐๐
Thanks roseabi. Definitely enjoy swimming and cycling. Iโm just worried about doing all 3 regularly in case I start thinking about triathlons.... ๐ค Thanks for the ideas and have a good weekend.
Ha!! I remember posting on here a few years ago that there was absolutely no way I would ever contemplate doing a triathlon. Currently working on my second triathlon... ๐
