Run Rabbit Trail Mix Challenge

Saturday was a great day out attending the Trail Mix challenge where we ran a different 5K course on the hour for 5 hours, a whopping 25K.

This was my first trail experience, and the Run Director suggested that time wise, we add 30 seconds per KM to our expectations, and to be fair given the terrain that was about right.

The strategy was to set out at a steady pace, and aim for a 35 minute 5K, and if all went to plan just walk the final race if I was able.

On the first race I fell in with another runner of a similar pace, and we dragged each other round the 5 runs, each one getting progressively more challenging :-)

Official times were ...

0:30:19

0:31:13

0:34:31

0:37:00

0:41:44

The final race was more walk/run than run, but determination got us all over the line.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, and I now know if pushed what I can do. My previous furthest run was 10 miles, so I was unsure if I could do this, but so glad I tried it - I will definitely be back next year.

Considering I started couch to 5K in September aged 50, not having run for 30 years, I can definitely say that the programme works, and I am probably now a runner!

/Steve

Well done to you Foz4star on completing all those 5k's on the hour, you got just under 30 minutes rest between races 1 and 2 but by race 4 and 5 that rest was only 23 minutes, glad you enjoyed the champagne.

Thanks for that, the rest periods were compromised as it took 10-15 minutes to walk to the next start point.

There was water, electrolytes and gels at the finish of each race if required. I think not waiting around too long was the key to not stiffening up towards the final runs.

I think if I had sat down, getting going again would have been challenging.

I wrote CHALLENGE at the end but somehow "spellchecker" has changed that to Champagne, lol, nevertheless you deserve that after all that running 🏃

AlMorr lol, I managed to hydrate properly at home, and may have squeezed in the odd pint (or three) :-)

What an interesting idea. At my pace this would pretty much be a continuous half marathon...

Thanks

cheekychipmunks it was a steady effort, the final two were tiring, but was very rewarding.

That sounds like such a neat event. I like that each 5k loop is different; I find running the same loop over and over dreadful. You've done amazing, especially given your new return to running. You can definitely call yourself a runner!
