Electrolyte boost

My first ‘long’ run today carrying electrolyte instead of water in a 660ml bottle on a hip holster thingy. Definitely made a difference, especially on the hilly loops I did at the end. Also recovery was much quicker and no muscle cramps.

Has anyone else noticed such a difference with electrolyte?

Well done on a great run! Not used an electrolyte drink myself Dave but it is something I would like to try on longer runs in the summer. Do you mind me asking which one you used? Will also be interested in the replies of others who use them.🙂

I got a tube of 5 High tablets from the running shop - dissolve 1 tablet in 750ml water. I chose the citrus flavour.

You can get them from Halfords.... aimed at cyclists. They often have offers where if you order online and collect, they are half price. I have been in the store, ordered on my phone whilst there, picked up immediately for half price 👍🏼 I like the cherry flavour.

I started to carry electrolyte last summer in that hot humid summer running. I find it makes a huge difference and gives me that zap of energy after each sip. I also have a pint or so of it after a long hot run. I use ORS and SIS hydration tabs. But lucozade sport has worked after a run too. 😊

Crikey, you went a long way! Well done, pretty toasty today too......I’ve used electrolyte/rehydration tabs in hot weather, last summer, for anything 10k and over, like you dissolved in my water bottles, found it very good and same, seemed to recover better too.....👍

On long runs where it’s not too hot,, e.g 10 miles or so, and I’ve only taken water with me, I ’ll have them afterwards sometimes to help rehydrate

I can't really say that using these kind of things is good or bad. When I am tired, I am tired and no amount of Hydration drinks or gels "picks me up" , well not at least to the point that I can really notice. Obviously we need hydration on the go ( I went though 1 litre of ENDURA Rehydration Performance Fuel endura.com.au/Products/Prod... and another litre of water during a 4 hour run/walk this past Sunday plus a couple of gels and a few sugar snakes :) I managed to finish the distance but I cant really say that this was because of these products.

I am sceptical. I have read more than once that electrolyte supplements do not have an effect other than in extreme cases, but I DO know that I really like the taste of High 5 Citrus and found it to be most refreshing during several of the events I have run 😊😊😊

I found it really made a huge difference- normally I can’t maintain pace after 10k and just get progressively weaker and slower, especially if there’s any hills. The sips of electrolyte really seemed to work for me. 🙂

From the evidence of one run... 😊

Yes it could be a fluke, but it really does seem to have made a difference for me. Not only on the run, but afterwards as well, with no cramps and today my legs feel really good - not at all like I’d done 17k on mixed terrain yesterday. I’ll try using it going forward and see what a difference it makes. 🙂

Not wishing to take this thread any further off topic, but thanks for the info about electrolyte drinks. All my runs so far have been without carrying any water but as I'll be attempting an HM soon I needed to wise up on this. Have ordered some SIS electrolyte tablets and some Tailwind!
