10 mile – it had to be done!

I couldn't fit in a run yesterday and with a relatively free day today I set out thinking I'd aim for 10k and if it was going well then I'd push on to 10 miles (16.1k).

Looking out, it was overcast and damp but not really raining. So I put on my road shoes. Big mistake – of course the rain got heavier and the toe area on my shoes is quite porous so my feet started to feel damp pretty quickly. The other big mistake I made was going out without my cap (to shield my glasses from the rain).

I set off at a steadyish pace and the first 5k passed uneventfully. At 8k, all was good but the thought of being only halfway to my goal was pretty daunting. At 10k it was obvious that I could continue but another 5k felt like a big ask. However, from the 11th kilometre on it felt pretty relaxed. For some reason, my HR dropped while I maintained the same steady pace so I upped it a little in the last km. So I'm feeling more than chuffed with today's run. I also took 1 min 9 sec off my 10k previous best.

Thank you! Funny you should say I was in the zone as that's the focus of the John Douillard book's plan that I have been following. :)

Never heard of that before but yes it was a very nice surprise when it happened. I look forward to experiencing it again. :)

Excellent run. Congratulations on hitting 10 miles and breaking your 10k record at the same time!

Thank you. It was a real learning experience being totally relaxed and just setting my pace according to my heart rate. I now feel more confident about tackling a half marathon. It's also really enjoyable (and more satisfying) to complete a longer distance.
