Today's attempt to do 18miles was a complete disaster. Did just over 4miles in the first session then after a bathroom break couldn't get the Internet on my phone so I could listen to music on Spotify with my wireless headphones. As I can't run without music I decided to cut short the session. I am thinking of having another attempt tomorrow but a friend of mine said that she only did 16miles in training. Tbh I don't think it will make any difference to how I get around the marathon for me whether I do 18 or stop at 16 being my longest run. I don't run with music during events as like to experience the atmosphere only run with music on my own as noone runs at my pace.

Will 16miles be enough to get me around Brighton?
Hi pippa sounds amazing what you’re doing, I can’t really offer any advice as I have ‘only’ gone up to HM distance, however, I was of the belief that 20 miles was considered an ok prep for a marathon.
Also, I’ve noticed you haven’t posted your amazing achievements so far, show us the bling! Please do, we’d love to hear of your experiences,(you’d also earn your HM badge here) plus I note you’re in for Swansea HM this year, me too!
Good luck with all you’re doing
Mx
Thanks Madge. Not sure how I add pictures on here unless I do a separate post.
For a full marathon? I plan on getting to 23 miles. Then I know I’ve only got a ParkRun to add on on the day. I wouldn’t be happy only having done 16 or 18 and knowing I still have 8-10 miles still to add.
Did you mean kilometres not miles?
I meant miles. Only work with miles. Know what 13.1miles, 26.2, 3.1 & 6.2 miles are in kilometres but anything in between I am stumped so do all my runs in miles.
Well since the HM is only 13 miles.. you should be fine
Or are you planning a Marathon ?
I am doing the Brighton Marathon on 14th April but I have the Weston Super Mare half marathon on 24th March in two weeks tomorrow that is why I was asking if 16-18 miles would be enough to get me around the marathon.
Right...go you
How comfy are you when you run your HMs ? I am doing my first on 24th March, with a predicted time of 2.35 to 2.45...
I would not be happy, even thinking of a Marathon in the near future though....but I am sure that far more experienced folk than me will advise you...
OK I will never win but I am getting quicker. Brighton Half was 3mins and 9secs quicker than Cardiff Half (4:13:09). My feet hurt but I have bought some new socks as only wear my trainers once a week so it's not them. I am OK after a half an hour of finishing.
I run/walked 15 miles yesterday - at my minimum cutoff pace of 14:30 mins per K. At this stage , I have no idea of how I could finish the full 26.2 miles. Sorry to sound negative!! I have known people who sign up for a marathon 3 weeks before the event having only run 5K parkruns and managed to finish the event - but don't ask me how!!!!!
Well, I'm coming back from injury and my schedule has me up to a 16 mile long run before tapering into Brighton begins. Not ideal, but it is what it is. I'm going for it, so I think you'll be fine.
Thanks andystev. I did 18.26miles on the treadmill today and I was dead chuffed. Like you said even if I did it outside it would not make any difference as anything can happen on the day.
Running 16 miles (25 km) as your long run is not enough imho. Closer to 19-20 miles (30 km) is about the minimum I'd say to get round a marathon course ( based on by own experience). But everyone is different.
I ran a long run max 16km (16/1.6 miles) before my first HM (21km) and 30km (30/1.6 miles) before my first marathon (42km). That was sufficient in both cases to get me to the finishing line although I died a bit from 17-21km and 30-42km respectively. Because they were my first time events I had no target time really, just wanted to finish.
I am planning to do 20miles this weekend that said someone I know said most marathon plans go up to 18. Like you said everyone is different. Some people only do 10miles before a half marathon some feel they have to do the distance. Another friend only did 16 but she did do a 20mile race as 20is 4miles more than 16. Everyone is entitled to their opinions.
I like to run with something, be it music. podcasts or zombierun, etc. but I have to say on a few occasions I have run without anything and it has been great. Once in a while its nice just to spend time with my own thoughts whilst out running. Might be worth trying.
