Anyone know anything about ligaments??

Hi there!

It seems that for me, HM training is temporarily on hold, whilst this silly self-inflicted issue with my knee sorts itself out.

I realised though, that you lot are really smart, and you might be able to offer some wisdom on this. Basically since the whole 17.5k-without-any-insoles debacle, the back of my left knee gets really tight, and there is a spot on the front right that feels sore. My physio says he thinks it's a ligament issue, and it will settle down. He's given me an excercise to free up the nerve pathway, whatever the heck that is, which does work for about 4k or so when I run, but then everything starts to tighten up again, presumably due to the ligament thing triggering my sciatic nerve, or at least that's my limited understanding from what the physio said. I reckon my brain's then tightening the muscles to protect them as it's the same nerve. I don't know, I'm guessing!!

So advice needed really. Do I do more stretches? Less running? More running? Ice? Heat? Give up totally and go back to the couch?

Thanks in advance!!

Neil :)

I think you ought to carry on doing the exercises the physio gave you and give it time! xx

Thanks Abi, well I am of course, just impatient!! I loved the longer distances, and I’m itching to get back out there of course.

Since I posted the ligament thing had eased considerably, so hopefully a few more days rest will see me sorted.

The hardest thing I think is that I can feel my depression hovering around again, so I really do just need to get out there and run!!

Patience... I must learn that!!

Oh goodness, I totally understand your impatience xxx The thing is that it's not much good asking us about medical problems because we don't have all the details, and are not professionals in that area. In most cases anyway 😊

Did the physio give you an idea of how long it might take to get better? Maybe they wouldn't mind if you take an extra appointment to explain it in more detail? From what you say it's heading in the right direction which is fab!

I know it's hard to lose something you rely on, even for a short while. Have you been able to get out for walks at least? Anyway, you can always come on here to chat about running in the meantime - tell me about your running plans once you're fit again?

Thanks Abi, yeah, I know we're not a bunch of medical professionals :) The physio's actually been very good, and to be fair to him, the ligament pain had largely eased when I last visited on Friday. He's done everything I've asked of him, and has got me from struggling to run 5k because I wasn't stretching properly, to 17.5k - when I went and messed it all up lol!

I'm not going to get the opportunity to run before Friday now anyway, so I think I'll see how things are after then, he can usually fit me in at short notice. At £42 per time though I need to watch it :) And this is the north too... it must be 4 times that down where you are :P

My lifestyle is just not conducive to doing this. Yesterday I woke up, drove to work (an hour sitting in the car), worked from 8 till 6 with a little bit of walking round at lunch time, drove back (another hour) and then sat in a church meeting all evening. Monday's a bad day to be fair, but if I get up any earlier I'm too tired to concentrate at work, if I go to bed earlier I can't sleep, I think I probably just want shooting lol!

However, I am not giving up!! I still have the HM in my sights for when I'm fully recovered, though I may not do an actual race, I might just get comfortable with the distance first. I'd like to do some hill intervals (there's a brilliant route near me for that) and some speed training.

First I need to get back to somewhere near where I was though :)

Thanks for all your help and support, you're amazing!!
