So tired!

So the weather has turned and I decided to up my distance from now on, month by month, heading up to HM distance. Today I ran 13k with my friend in 1 hour 20 mins. A nice pace of about 6:30m per k, although we went off too fast for the first 2k! Anyway my problem is that this afternoon I’m totally exhausted! I’ve just had an hour or so nap and now can’t move 😂 I warmed down and stretched but have no energy. I didn’t drink any water or fuel at any point. Should I have? Is that the problem? Or is it just because I’m not used to it. Hoping to do 14k in a couple of weeks.

Yes short answer.

Google top tips for doing an HM event and consider proportioning some of them pragmatically in your build up.

Give your body all the support it needs.

I love JuJu ‘s 5k reward system of fuelling, each 5k.I found just simple to practise.

Good luck Tasha and take care of you.You are doing brilliantly.Be good to yourself with fuelling.

💥🏃‍♀️💥👏👏

Ok thanks Tbae!

I started fuelling when I got to 1 hour 30 mins but then I was running slower than you. I find that I’m wiped out after a longer run but am better if I take on board electrolytes and gels. I am also better if I don’t just give in to it and try and move around a bit but easier said than done 😂

Ha ha that could be very true! I’ve just ordered some gels. Feeling a bit better now though thank goodness!

I should explain that better. I actually take on the gels at 30-40 minute intervals but didn’t start doing this until I got to running 1 hour 30 mins in total. Hope that helps.

Brilliant 👌🏽 I’ll try it. One should see me through at this stage 👍🏽

I used to need a nap after my 1st few 10k’s! 😂😂😂

Hopefully I’ll get used to it but I’ve got another 8k to add on yet 😂💤 Hopefully the gels will help 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have some SIS gels too but haven’t used them yet. Too scared incase I 💩 myself!! That’s what I’ve heard about them. 😳

He he yes I’ve been worried about that. I’ve ordered some Huma Chia which are supposed to be all natural and less irritating as well as tastier. Just try one on a normal day rather than on a run 👍🏽

Let me know how you get on. 😬

Tried a gel today. Fine on stomach. Hasn’t helped complete exhaustion again today after run. Think it helped a bit on run but couldn’t say for sure 😂

Thanks for letting me know. I seem to get tired at 7-8k so may try one on a practice run next time. I’m still knackered from yesterday!

I've laid on the couch since getting back from my long run this morning! Shattered. I munched two jelly babies and put an electrolyte tab in my water bottle. That was enough to get me through the 15k but doesn't apear to have boosted my post run energy. Shame cos the sun came out and the garden is crying out for some TLC - but nowhere near as loudly as my legs and feet were crying out for a rest :D :D :D

Maybe we need to try some of the SIS recovery product I've seen mentioned on here.

Hmm. Wonder if someone will be kind enough to bring me a nice cold glass of Prosecco and a couple of ibuprofen, save me having to get up? Yawn. Yawn. :D

He he glad I’m not alone! Yes, I’ve ordered some gels. Got to be worth a try!

When I got back today,I placed an order for a bunch of SIS stuff - from the couch of course - using the GSR gels voucher and adding other bits until I got free postage. Lots of goodies for me to try out on future runs, including recovery powder, though I have to say I'm very wary of those gels - they do sound a bit evil :)

I think SIS are ok 👌🏽 I do like hydration tablets after a run as can feel exhausted as I lose a lot of salt I think but today was a whole different league of tiredness! Having a rest day tomorrow 👍🏽

Oh dear 😕. I was shattered all last weekend as well - not just the Sat when I ran. Turned out I have shingles! No long runs for me for a bit. 😂😂😂🤢😥😥😥

Oh dear! Get well soon! I think my body just can’t handle the increase. Hopefully it’ll get used to it! It better!

I'm sure it will ... but in the meantime just indulge yourself, you've earned a rest :)

There is nothing better than a cosy afternoon post-run nap, don't fight it 😊 Hot chocolate, comfy trousers, sofa, purring cat, something mundane on the telly and doze. The best feeling.

Fuel is a very personal thing, everyone has very different requirements—I didn't really consider it properly until quite recently, I had a bit of Tailwind for longer runs but didn't measure it out particularly or think about it too scientifically. But I really flagged terribly for the first time during the GNR so I'm starting to experiment. I'm planning to make my own power flapjacks this afternoon, will be posting my results later!

Can also recommend the Tailwind recovery drinks if you genuinely need to get up and on after a longer run, and have no time for a nap (have not tried any others, so can't compare brands, though I do have a Tribe recovery drink freebie to try out, they have a September deal on just now if you wanted to give them a go).

Thank you! Naps are they way forward then! I do take hydration drinks anyway after running as I think I need salt replenishment. I think different people must need different amounts of supplements. My friend ran on empty today: no breakfast 🤷🏽‍♀️ no way I’d be able to do that on a long run! Fingers crossed for gels. I think I manage ok to 10k. Maybe I just need to get used to it 👌🏽

SaskAlliecat profile image

I tend to take fuel in the form of Tailwind for any runs over an hour (although depending on the intensity of the run and the ambient temperature, I may not drink much or I may drain it all). Even with that though, you might just be tired as your body adjusts to the increase in distance. Ensure you're also taking in some protein after your run to help with recovery. If I'm on the ball (and all the stars are in alignment 😆), I tend to eat an egg and a slice of toast pre-run; Tailwind on my run, and a smoothie post workout.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Marathon in reply toSaskAlliecat

Ok thanks. I’ll try eggs 👌🏽

If you were fine during the run, then I would say no you didn't necessarily need to fuel during the run. But your post race fuelling should have been better.

Great pace! As for fuel / hydration - lots of comments above. We do all seem to have different requirements and preferences but most will refuel during a HM, whether it's via gels or other (I am in the 'other' camp with my power flap jacks! ) . Good point about post run recovery. I do think the post run tiredness gets less to a degree, as you get used to the distance but then of course we push the pace and this can make us tired too! 🙂
