Driving home

Hi all. I am signed up for a marathon which is quite a distance from home. I am just wondering about the wisdom of trying to drive home after your first marathon. Any thoughts?

You I've not done one, but my son has and he wouldn't even drive the 4 miles home from our local marathon!

I made the mistake of driving home after a very long run recently, I had to stop a few times to walk and stretch... Think if I have no choice next time I'll leave it a bit longer and make sure I've done lots of post run stretches.!

That sounds like a good plan!

I would stay over in a hotel with a bath tub 🙂

Is public transport an option if you don't want to stay over?

There is, and even though I have booked car parking at the hotel I am seriously considering the public transport option! It will be an hour and a half on the train!

Have to agree with the others - wouldn't do it.

Driving after half marathon was bad enough . . . . . .

I am doing a half in September but I did 12 miles last Sunday and drove afterwards and was grand. Might see how I go after my longer runs.

I drove home after my first marathon which was about 1hr 30minutes drive, It was fine and planning to do it again after Beachy head marathon in October.

Did you wait for a little while after finishing before heading for the driving seat?

well it was brighton marathon so had a burger and a large coke, then got the bus back to the car, so maybe just under 2hrs.

I don't plan on heading straight to the car so hopefully we will be grand. Drove yesterday after a 13 mile run with only a slightly sore foot!

I havent and frankly rather not... but have driven after 20 mile training runs... I just got a bit stiff.....

I have driven 3 hours after a 6 hour obstacle race with no ill effects. Stopped en route to eat everything in sight at a service station. Wouldn't have chosen to do so if there had been an option of being driven, but didn't feel in any way unsafe.

If anything driving the following morning is the dodgy bit.

I wouldn't have trusted myself to drive to the corner of the road after my HM, and the next day I was John Wayne 'au féminin'. I took the train home, and was relieved as I wouldn't have been able to drive with very swollen feet and legs. But that's me. I'd avoid it unless you have already tested driving after long runs.
