First proper week of triathlon training started with a 30 minute easy run this morning. I have just purchased some sports sunglasses to protect my eyes from sun and insects. These are meant especially for the bike, but I would like to try running in them too (have never run in sunglasses). I decided against doing this for the run today because it was raining a bit, but unfortunately the sun came out as I went, and produced a horrible glare on the wet ground, from which my hat peak could not protect me!
Probably as a result of this, after I got home a migraine set in so I've been lying in a darkened room listening to running podcasts - check out Tina Muir interviewing parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt:
Although I've not tried them out properly yet, the sports glasses seem very comfortable and were only Β£10 from Amazon Prime. Even better, they are currently on a BOGOF deal, so I got 2 pairs Here's a link if you're interested:
I'm hoping I can continue with the training tomorrow, may have to swap things around a bit. My intensive swimming course is this Saturday! Wish me luck (nervous!)
I've seen "fashionable" people with their caps turned backwards so the peak protects their vulnerable neck or ears. Could it not be wrapped around your neck so it protects from glare from below?
I did my first training run with Paul and 3 other friends possibly contemplating the IOW marathon in October (i say possibly!!) 3 of them are definite and routinely run 10 miles on a Sunday, Sally and i worked out we hadn't done longer than a 7 miler for a few weeks(worked out mine was the Needles XC half 7 weeks ago!) we both felt flaky after 10 miles but made it to 11.7 of the 12 the others did, and it was hilly and warm! But legs felt ok just feet a bit sore(waiting on new shoes on order) but definitely needed to eat/ drink more. Tried out a new energy snack that my friend had used on her marathon as i don't get along well with gels, but had chopped it up and shared with others so next time i need to have more. it was very tasty though!
Total for last week much more than usual at 27 miles including a really hillly 5 mile club run last Thurs . Will see what this week brings and how my 2nd Sun training goes! week off this week which is lovely!
I wanted to try them before, they were on the counter at run shop 1/3rd of the price as on a short B/B so bought a few, mine are the raspberry one! going back for some more! i'll have to see if they have the coffee one!
Sounds like excellent training, although 11.7 miles as the very first long run after 7 sounds ambituous. that said, we've all seen how you marvel at anything you put your mind to, so I'm sure you'll soon be the one suggesting adding a few extra miles after a gruelling weekend long run.
hhm! i think you're right it was a bit ambitious! all paul's fault as it was on his training plan! But up to 10 miles wasn't so bad! i definitely need to read up more on nutrition. Plus i pretty much always run in the evning and this was an 8am start! I would like to do the local one and its right near my birthday, but I'm just going to see how it goes! you can enter on the day! the route's pretty hilly but i know a lot of people trying it for the 1st time this year!
My headphones broke last week, so I got a new pair on Friday. Wireless thingies, never had that before, and wore them for the first time on my Saturday long run. And surprise surprise, I set a double PB on that run - both 10km and HM. So there you have it - don't waste time on threshold runs and intervals, just buy wireless headphones if you're looking to improve speed!
First run of the week yesterday. 14K along the coast at a better pace than when I did a similar run last year. Taking the family on a slow-going 6K trek along the coastal path later on in the day might not have been one of my smarter moves.
I need sunglasses! Must be cheap π I shall have a look at those you mentioned Roseabi
I can't afford to buy energy bars so I make my own but yesterday I took the Lidl pistachio bites, which are fab. I just snip them open a bit before stashing them about my person π I ran 16k but started chomping them about half way. No melting π
I am on a tough week running wise. A long run yesters and another one today. I had them stacked up because of being too tired to run because of pre dawn walks with the dog. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzπ Not to mention all the post dawn walks as well π
MissW take a look in Halfords for sunnies too! Very reasonable price and good selection as aimed at cyclists mainly. Hubby bought a pair of wrap-around ones when we were in there last week as he has v sensitive eyes since recent treatment.
I have taken mine out for a spin on the bike, and I am very pleased indeed. Comfortable, don't restrict my vision (my normal sunglasses are much too dark for cycling), but I still felt comfortable in the bright sun, and how I laughed at the feeble attempts of insects to land in my eyes! Ha ha!!
They're not very sexy, mind - here's a (rather blurry) pic on my Instagram feed...
I was thinking about singing as a way to amuse myself during the ultra next year - what with my sloshy water bottles and warbling I'll be the person to avoid won't I!
Feeling a bit silly. I missed my planned 10k run on Sunday due to - ahem - GI issues (don't tell Nance, she wouldn't understand and she doesn't seem to have noticed I didn't run) which have continued. I managed a 7k this morning but I was not comfortable. I have cut all my normal fruit out of my diet and much of my veg, cut down on fibre, still having issues. I was musing on this at lunchtime... as I spread my sweet chilli hummus onto my crisp-bread... I don't do well with some spicy food so I may now have identified the culprit π€£ Funny what causes little upsets!
Sorry, MissW, was this for me? I'm swapping to a new laptop and might have missed it. Yes, I love my porridge I'm all better now, ta - I think it must just have been that spicy hummus! It's not that spicy really, but it must just have not suited me. All is well now, and I went trotting round Carsington this morning and got half drownded in the torrential downpour!
I have a gel that I got free from a race but I've not dared eat it π Something nauseating about them, sucking gel from a packet makes me feel a bit bleeeugh π
ifmtoy can cut them up into bits and just try one or two spaced out on the run, or near the end, just to see how you get on with them. Guava tastes nice π There's a song called guava jelly π
