Hello Boycie,

Vitamin supplements are proven to be effective in slowing down the progress of dry macular degeneration (MD), and helping to prevent dry MD turning to wet MD.

Macushield is one of many available eye supplements, but its contents are fairly basic. It contains lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. Many of the others on the market contain additional vitamins and minerals which are also thought to be helpful.

Incidentally, we have been told by research scientists that the body will make meso-zeaxanthin when you take lutein.

If you are very lucky, your GP may be able to give you a supplement on prescription. It is always best to speak with him/her before taking a supplement, for this and safety reasons, particularly if you are taking other medication.

We are awaiting the results of the second AREDS trial (age related eye disease study) which is a large study which has been carried out in the USA over the last few years, to assess the benefit of lutein and zeaxanthin as well as Omega3, vitamins C and E and zinc.

Please see the following link for more details;

areds2.org/

Results of AREDS2 should be published by the middle of this year.

Please also see the Macular Society booklet on nutrition at the following link for more details;

Please beware of any claims made by the manufacturers of supplements claiming that they will restore lost sight. They will not do so!

Best wishes

Hi Boycie,

Glad you asked this question. MacuShield is different from other eye vitamins because it contains meso-zeaxanthin. Not all eye supplements contain this ingredient. In fact, MacuShield is the only one that contains it in its converted form. (In reply to what andy said, some folks lack the ability to turn lutein into MZ naturally.)

My Grandfather uses MacuShield and is having good results thus far. He likes that the pill is small and that he's only required to take one per day. He also says his acuity is improving in his left eye some.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them as best I can!

Have a great day,

A

Hi guys, I have written an extensive report on Macushield supplements. I have to say the reviews seem to be mostly positive. even if the improvement is only small that would be worth it. peakhealthpro.com/macushiel...

The "Trust me I'm a doctor" show looked at it recently and showed scientifically there is definite macular health improvement. (Must have lutein, xeanthin, mesoxeanthin) my gp has given me macushield on prescription now.
