Advice on taking Areds2 supplement with single kidney

Hi, We often have multiple health problems so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

I have macular degeneration in my right eye, very poor sight which is being treated by Moorfields. The left is dry macular and my Moorfields doctor has recommended that I take Areds2 supplement which can significantly help in preventing the left eye deteriorating.I am keen to start this as soon as possible.

The supplement has high doses of vitamins and minerals which may not be good for my single kidney.

I have tried to get advice from Urology online but no reply after a month. I was hoping to speak to them this week but my appointment has been put off for another month. I have spoken to my GP’s pharmacist who cannot give me an answer.

What about contacting the manufacturer to see what they say?

My thinking being that if there is any doubt about taking them the manufacturer will tell you not to in case they damage your one kidney and you sue them.

Hello Teekay2,

Are you under a hospital consultant regarding your remaining kidney? If so, you could try contacting them via their secretary.

Have you directly asked your GP? If they do not know, they may be able to find out for you?

Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply.

I contacted my Macmillan Nurse, she is the contact for the consultant, about a month ago. She said she would look into it but I have heard nothing to date.

I contacted my GP who put me onto their pharmacist who did not feel that he could make a judgement.

I willbe seeing GP in a couple of days so will bring it up.

I will try the consultant’s secretary.

THIS IS WHAT DR.GOOGLE SAYS:

Due to the high doses of vitamins and minerals in AREDS2, individuals with kidney disease, including those with a single kidney, should consult with a healthcare provider before taking the supplement to assess potential risks and benefits.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

AREDS2 and Kidney Health:

AREDS2 is a supplement designed to slow down vision loss in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It contains high doses of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, which may not be suitable for individuals with kidney problems.

Kidney Disease Considerations:

High Mineral Content: The high mineral content, especially zinc, in AREDS2 can be problematic for individuals with kidney disease, as their kidneys may have difficulty processing and eliminating excess minerals.

Zinc Accumulation: Excessive zinc intake can lead to zinc accumulation in the body, which can be toxic and harmful, particularly for those with kidney issues.

Urinary Tract Problems: Zinc can also increase the frequency of urinary tract infections, kidney stones and prostatic hypertrophy

Consultation with a Healthcare Provider:

Before starting AREDS2, individuals with kidney disease or a single kidney should consult with their doctor or a nephrologist to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the supplement in their specific case.

Alternative Approaches:

If AREDS2 is not deemed safe or appropriate, alternative approaches to managing AMD may be discussed, such as focusing on other dietary modifications or other treatments.

AREDS2 and AMD:

AREDS2 has been shown to slow down vision loss in people with intermediate or late AMD.
