Hi Everyone,

I will be traveling to Scotland and Ireland in a couple of months and I too have both wet and dry AMD, I have been getting Eylea shots for the last 4 1/2 yrs. and wanted to know if I have a problem while visiting where would I go for care and should I take out insurance while I’m traveling.

Thanks for your help.

if you’re in the USA check with your current insurance provider to see if they offer any coverage when you are abroad.

No Medicare doesn’t cover you out of the country.

I would never travel without medical insurance. Eye care in UK a little sporadic.

Happy travels!

not as sporadic as in many other counties USA def included in that lot!

def take out travel insurance as although all our care is free on the NHS that only applies to residents. Hope your trip goes well.

Just a warning, that there is a long waiting list in Edinburgh NHS (and probably in other regions too) but private hospitals can do them, I think. Also another warning, UK health insurance companies such as BUPA will not cover them because they do not cover chronic diseases (at least as far as I know), so make sure your insurance really does cover such injections.

thanks for all your input, Medicare doesn’t cover us out of the country but I called my secondary and they do and should cover anything Medicare would cover in the US so I think all is good, thanks again fir everyone’s help.

I think you’d best contact the NHS for advice before you come. I suppose you’ll be travelling in the time between injections anyway so it would be emergency care anyway which you could receive but probably have to pay for.

hi atlas, welcome to Scotland when you get here. I echo Elvira Kate in saying eye departments are very stretched and even regular appointments are not being delivered on time in my area of central and south west Scotland. Suggest you check out available hospitals in the areas you intend to visit in case you have an emergency situation. I doubt you will be slotted into the nhs system for routine injections. When I went abroad I researched and had the telephone numbers of private clinics in case I needed to get seen urgently. Have a great time in our lovely country ….well lovely scenery anyway.

That’s a great idea I’ll try and get info when I arrive in each stop, first stop is Edinburg will be there for 4 days

try Googling each town for private eye clinics before you leave home. There should be some in Edinburgh and large towns such as Glasgow, Perth, Inverness etc. I know there is one in Ayr. I took down telephone numbers and took them with me. Didn’t need them but I felt prepared if I did. All the best.
