I have DMO diabetic macular oedema a condition caused because my diabetes team mistakenly thought I should lower my sugar levels quickly and it caused terrible sight loss. I lost my career and my driving licence in my early 40’s. Time and time again I hear of the amount of money and research for those with AMD for the older generation when little money seems to be spent on the younger working ages. These people who are younger have mortgages to pay and children to support. When will money be spent directly researching into other conditions such as DMO these people not only have sight loss but diabetes too. I am absolutely fed up with hearing about the great research done for AMD money should be spent on supporting other eye conditions too. When have you ever heard of money being spent on any other eye condition? Rant over.

Little money spent on DMO research it all goes on AMD
Good afternoon tallyho, Our our Research Strategy states that we fund research on all forms of macular disease, but unfortunately it’s currently the case that we don’t have any projects underway. Given the rising cases of diabetes and therefore the likely increase in sight loss due to the condition, we would like to fund more research on DMO.
If you would like to keep up to date with our research projects you will find details on our website.
Here you will find information on research projects and also details of how to become involved in our research.
Best regards,
Kelly

I understands tallyho's rant. I have the same condition. I lowered my blood sugar very quickly after my diabetes diagnosis, soon developed DMO. I am slim, did not eat sweets and no family history of diabetes except a grandmother at a very old age, I was in my mid-50's and freaked out. Fortunately I did not loose my vision or career and I do not drive, but I have a lot of pain and anxiety etc. after each injection and always fear infection from the injection. Loosing vision would mean I loose my job. I am a math professor in CUNY. There are no safety nets in the US for me if I loose my vision and I do not have any family etc. so vision loss would be devastating for me.
