Laser treatment for macular oedema

At some stage I am to have laser treatment for my macular oedema. I have had the dye test and seem to be suitable. I have a few questions

1 how long should it take to do

2 will it hurt

3 will I be able to work the next day and

4 how do I keep my eyes still

Any help with this would be great

Hi Koalajane I have Intermediate AMD in both eyes and have laser treatment in both. They give you drops in both eyes and a cup to keep your eye open which is like a clamp but you don't feel a thing. The specialist asks you to look into the machine at a light and he zaps the eye in different places. It's painless and only takes a minute. You don't feel a thing and you can carry on with normal activities. My husband drives home as the eyes are dilated.

Hi there ok so I have had a fair amount of laser over the years for macular oedema so I can answer your questions in more detail.1) does it hurt?

It’s a bit uncomfortable it is very very bright and it does depend on how much lasering they are doing. Usually you go into one room for a consultantation before hand to answer any questions they have another look at your eyes put drops in for anaesthetic then you go to the laser room.

2) can you work the next day ?

Yes definitely infact you should feel fine a few hrs later tho a bit light sensitive if you have sun glasses take them with you

3) how do you keep your eye still?

They actually put a contact lens attached to a monocular on your eye to keep it still it does not hurt because you have had anesthetic drops it feels a bit weird but it means you can’t blink and they control your eye for you so no worries there.

Timing ? As said depends how many lasers they are doing. You won’t be able to drive home if you usually drive as your eyes will be dilated the dilation should wear off within 6 hours of the drop going in.
