Pineapple and floaters

Has anyone heard of a recent study in Taiwan looking at the effects on floaters of eating pineapple? I have always had floaters, which got worse after a bout of posterior vitreous detachment and are very annoying even if not dangerous as is my AMD (under control with AREDS2 for the dry eye and injections for the wet eye). However, if eating pineapple will help the floaters, why not? Every little counts. Unless anyone knows of a drawback. Here is the cited article, comments welcome.

Hi Elvira. I have never heard of it but I am interested as I have Posterior Vitreous Detachment too as well as wet AMD in one eye and I am receiving Eylea injections. I shall read this with interest, thank you very much for sharing.

Looks really interesting. Anything that helps eye health sounds a good idea.

Good Morning ElviraKate,

There has always been claims of pineapple and its benefits, but no solid proof - however Pineapple has vitamin C which is good for eye health and this study you have linked doesn't suggest eating a copious amount, so there is no harm in trying to see if you get any benefit from eating pineapple

All the best,

Becky

I also heard and read some paper about this. And decided to try it myself - the worse that could happen waasthat it had no effect at all, right?

So, i ate half sometimes a whole pineapple a day for about 3-4 weeks and the floaters thing got better - they were less in my right eye and not so disturbing in my left. I took a break for a 2 weeks and the floaters reappeared. At the moment i'm trying to keep up and eat at least half pineapple a day and i'm quite happy with the results. Alao, i have to say that i take macushield gold (even though i do not have macular degeneration) and omega3 supplements. I am 34, and apart from high myopia(-12d) and probably a thin retina, i never have had any problems with my eyes so far(no pvd, no retinal detachment)

I think it is worth a try

It’s one paper, which is never enough, it’s interesting and the figures look good

You have to dig to find the dosage of pineapple, it’s 200g approx taken as dessert after lunch, and the big improvement comes in the third month (I didn’t read every word, I find the print quite hard going)

I’d be interested to see a greater number of subjects; to see if the improvement is maintained after 3 months and do you need to keep eating the full 200g or can you step down; and does it work for those of us not in Taiwan who will be getting probably a different variety of pineapple and fruit that is much less fresh too

Having said which there are plenty of pineapples around in London and it’s a nice dessert in summer… good for sore throats too
