Eyelea injections for two years and before that, 1 year of lucentis injections without any major issues until November 1, 2018.

At my last injection of eyelea, I immediately noticed black bubbles too numerous to count floating in my eye. I notified my doctor and he stated that it must be air bubbles. After a weekend of my eye and vision not clearing i began to have severe pain and little to no vision in that eye. I was instructed to meet with the on call doctor at 8am the following day. I had developed endophthlymitis and have not fully recovered sight in that eye. I am using drops in that eye multiple times daily, but can still see only minimal shapes and colors. I am worried that I will never fully regain vision. Has anyone had similar experiences?

Hi. I have sometimes experienced the odd black bubble but usually immediately after the injection. They normally sink to the bottom of my vision and are gone in a day. Good luck with yours and i hope your vision returns to normal.

Contact the macular society they may have prognosis info after endopthalmitis and ask your eye cli if too. Best wishes going forward.

Hi there sorry to hear about your troubles. Firstly it is quite difficult not to get bubbles when injecting Eylea because of the bottles are larger than others. Secondly what protective measures do they use to prevent injection ? Is draping used, face masks for the staff etc.

No draping, the only face mask was the one they put on me

My Eylea injections have not caused any trouble, and are given without any face masks, draping, etc. either. by the way. I guess I have just been lucky. I'm sure you looked it up, but this is what I got when I Googled:

How is endophthalmitis treated?

Treatment of postoperative endophthalmitis. Pars plana vitrectomy or vitreous aspiration may be performed by an ophthalmologist with administration of intravitreal antibiotics (ie, vancomycin, amikacin, ceftazidime). Consider systemic antibiotic administration as well as intravitreal steroids.Jul 2, 2018

Good luck to you, spzzdout!

Sorry this happened but there is about a 1:1000 chance. Face mask is optional by the injector, but minimal talking when near patient is required, draping was shown to be of No real benefit in prevention of infection. Some endopthalmitis is inflammatory rather than infectious and visual outcome is better. Good luck.

I brought up the minimal talking with the consultant in charge of our clinic and it didn't go down well- long story... but they do use face masks. Studies show infection can be from staff or patients talking so we can minimise risk by being quiet!!

The endophalmitis outcome will vary as stated above but have you been given intravitreal injections of antibiotics and has a sample been sent to the lab to see what is causing the endopthalmitis?/ You only mention eye drops....

Please follow my posts as I experienced a similar result from an Eylea injection in Aug 2018. Still without sight in that eye, but beginning to see shadows. It's been a long long process, complicated with the growth of a cataract. If you can't find my posts, let me know and I'll help you. I would really like to find some one other person who has had the same experience as I have, so I can have SOME idea of possible resolution. Let me know! Thanks
