how can i support my husband who has dry macular degeneration diagnosed 2 years ago
macular degeneration: how can i support my... - Macular Society
macular degeneration
Hi Monica, there are two aspects.
1. Emotional support. From yourself and others.
2. Practical. Vision aids etc. And diet.
Check out the macular society website for help with both. Their helpline is fab.
Be guided by your hubby' s abilities and interests. Push when you need to. You know how far you have to ' encourage' him to help himself!
Make sure he checks regularly with the amsler grid ( mark on it in pencil to compare week to week) as he might not notice a gradual deterioration or a change to wetmd. Either way, new vision aids may help at different stages.
There may be a local support group he can attend where he can chat with folk who have the same issues he faces. Our partners can't really get some of it and sometimes we just need a 'woe is me' moment without boring our families - that's what this forum is good for too lol.
Your gp can offer counselling to both of you. I have found it helps.
Finally, try to live in the moment together, enjoy all that today offers but plan gently for life to change as time progresses. The good thing is drymd is slow acting.
Sending you both a hug x
thankyou for your help ,much appreciated x

All good advice given above.
I was diagnosed with MC ten years ago, and I’m still coasting. Don’t give up hope, don’t throw in the towel and assume life’s over.
