Myopic macular degeneration

Hi all.

After treatment (18 months and 10 Lucentis injections) for what I’d assumed was ‘age related’ MD, a consultant today told me, no, it was ‘myopic’ MD. I’ve always (since teens) been extremely short sighted so maybe no surprise there.

Has anyone else been diagnosed with ‘myopic’ MD and, if so, how has treatment gone, what is the long term outlook ? Also, any pointers to any further info on this particular form of MD?

Have to say that, in my case, my ‘wet’ ‘MD’ has completely dried out and was probably ok after 6 or so injections. So, thankfully, now on a ‘watching brief’ following my first eye clinic WITHOUT an injection. Hopefully things will stay this way.

But, as I say, I’d be interested in the experience of others.

Many thanks! 😊

I had a bleed from myopic MD when I was 63 and only needed one shot to stop it. That was 2 years ago. I used to have it checked every 3 months but now I'm on a yearly checkup. Hope you have the same success.

Hi I've had MMD for about 5 years now in the right eye. I've had 23 injections and learned to live with them now. I'm still hoping for stability..last time I went there was no bleed so I have to go back in 8 weeks instead of 4. I suppose the main concern for me is it doesn't develop in the left eye. I'm not as short sighted in that eye so hopefully it won't. I'm unsure how likely that is generally and would be interested to know.

I wish you success with your treatment and good luck for the future.

Sheila

Thanks Sheila. Good luck with your treatment and good news that your interval has been pushed out a little!

I have myopic MD, I'm extremely short sighted, developed a cnv about 2 years ago, I've had injections of eylia, things have remained relatively stable, I've been advised that people with myopic MD tend to require less injections hopefully it will be the case for you, I find yellow no glasses helpful with the blue light

Many thanks. I'm seeing my 'normal' optician in a couple of weeks so I'll ask about 'blue light' glasses.

Like you I've been extremely short sighted since young. I have lost my central vision in my left eye but so far the injections are keeping my right eye ok and I manage to drive and do most things wearing glasses or contact lenses. Like you for a long time I was treated for AMD. I am now 69yrs old and as long as I can carry on with the injections hopefully I will continue as I am. My prescription is -11 in both eyes. Hope that helps

Hi Fuzzbox, I have Myopic CNV both eyes . I always been short sighted, - 10.5 both eyes.

I started lucentis injections in 2017 left eye I had fluid and bleed, within about 5 weeks the distortion and my sight had improved .

Over 5 years I’ve had 32 injections in the left eye , recently moved onto Eylea , to see if it settles it down for a longer period. The right eye started in 2021 and required 6 lucentis injections and so far it’s doing well and pretty stable.

I work full time , drive , and do everything I have always done although I must say there is times it gets to you , and I have a wobble , as sight is everything.

This chat and macular society are great for help and information.

Take care and good luck for the future .

I also got MMD at 60. It periodically goes into remission, once for 2 years and now, it has been been maintaining without an injection for the last 7 months! I’ve lost some vision and don’t drive at night but otherwise I am able to do most all things without problems. I try to eat a really good diet and actually see better than before due to cataract surgery.Good luck. It’s a better diagnosis than AMD.

I'm 77 and being treated for wet AMD in L eye since September 2020. 9 injections of eyelea so far but the sight continues to deteriorate. I have been myopic since age 8 and wonder if I might in fact have myopic AMD. What would be the difference in treatment and progression if so? And how is it diagnosed as different from wet AMD ?
