I was diagnosed just over 1 year ago with RVO. Im having lucentas injections that do stop the leak for a short time, then it starts leaking again, so another batch of injections needed. What i would like to know is it ok to fly, just a journey of 45 minutes. Any advice would be most welcome.

Retinal Vein Occlusion
I had an injection on the Thursday and I flew to Australia, (23 hours flying) on the following Tuesday with no ill effects. I did keep my eye moisturised with liquified tears as the air conditioning is inclined to dry the eyes
Yes I have flown with no problems. But if you are worried ask the medical team to put your mind at rest .
I have been having eye injections for more than 7yrs and have flown numerous times sometimes within 24hrs with no side effects. I have never been warned not to fly.
Hi friend, thank you so much for your prompt reply, so helpful.
Yes, I've flown regularly too. No problems. Just make sure your condition is covered in your travel insurance.
Hi friend, thank you so much for your prompt reply and advice re travel insurance, so very helpful.
Dear Harrymole,
It would be advisable to ring and confirm with your ophthalmologist's secretary. The advice that we were given at the Macular Society is that it is advisable to wait until at least 5 days after an injection before flying, in case of any negative side effects post injection which need attending to.
Please contact us on the Macular Society helpline if you would like a copy of our Travel and Holidays information sheet which specifies this.

Thank you so much for your reply..I have requested you send me the info re travel and holidays.
I asked this recently at Moorfields and they said I shouldn't fly immediately after the injection. I don't think flying harms you it s just that they want you to be near enough to go back to them if complications arise. The one they worry about a lot is infection and I looked up studies for this and, whilst they can occur at any time, they seem to be most common in the few days following the injection. Just look out for pain and extra redness or discharge before you go I think Good luck
Thank you my friend for your reply and your advice re infection.
