Afraid of a wet AMD relapse.

Dear All,

I had several years of Avastin for Wet AMD in my right eye by a fantastic specialist and was discharged as cured about 5 years ago. I still had some light loss and a little distortion in the right eye and will forever.

Lately, however, I have become anxious that there are more residual symptoms although I do have a tendency to fixate on that type of data. There doesn't appear to be any more distortion on the Amsler Grid, but I still worry. I can't see my old specialist because of medical coverage network restrictions or I would go for an exam post haste.

I guess my question is who can do a local examination in the interim. If it is determined that issues exist, I can then change networks in October. I don't really know what type of physician can do an exam or if I have to run to a retinal specialist. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I assume that you are not in the UK?

I am sorry to learn about your wet AMD, but pleased that it was treated effectively in the past.

If you are, I would suggest regular monitoring by an optometrist at an opticians.

The majority have good equipment to monitor macular conditions and can arrange NHS fast track referrals to hospital ophthalmologists if appropriate.

skip a trip to the eyeglasses doctor and find an ophthalmologist....an eye doctor. Imho an optician hasn't the skill nor equipment to look for wet and nuances.

You are 100% correct...I have to schedule an appointment with my Optometrist and will follow up as needed. Fortunately, I can see him tomorrow. The insurance plan I'm on here in the U.S. is completely mired in referral red tape. Imagine that! I can't say hello to a provider without getting a referral from someone else in the chain.

Hi Hollyg.. Medicare my foot! The flavor I have doesn't allow me to see the specialist that is excellent so I'm going to be on the hook until January out of pocket. I really don't want the unknown doctor punching a needle in my eye. Sigh.... Rewind... You we right. Went to the Optometrist who examined me long enough to get the referral written! 😨
