Wet Macular Degeneration Treatment

Are there types of wet macular degeneration that cannot be treated and why? My mother has been in for an examination and they injected one eye but would do the other and didn't explain why.

It may be that she has dry md in that eye. Inj only work for wet.

It is not likely but possible Dr made a mistake in her notes - clinic will only inject as written. If an error has been made make sure admin pick up on it for next inj appt.

Suggest you double check with her Dr what type she has in each eye.

Any infection also precludes an inj but they would normally tell you that.

Best wishes to you both for the future x

Hi cavinbiker

Strictly speaking there is only one type of wet age-related macular degeneration. What varies in different people and even in different eyes of the same person are the list of complications that can occur with the disease, ie detachment, vein occlusion etc. , but whatever the situation may be, the treatment is usually the same.

The reasons why treatment is given for one of your mum's eye and not the other could be:

1) one eye may not yet have reached the criteria for injections. NICE stipulates that the visual acuety should be worse than 20/ 40.

2) The macula may already be too damaged so that injections would not do any good at all.

I hope it is the former in your mum's case.

If you feel uneasy about the whole matter you can always contact the macular society direct. They are very good on giving advice.

Hope that helps. Best wishes and a hug for your mum.

Hi Cavingbiker,

I suspect that your mother has developed wet macular degeneration in one eye and dry in the other (which is why one eye only was injected).

Ayayay80's post has also mentioned other reasons.

Please see the following link to our booklet about treatments;

If you would like to have a chat about your mother's circumstances, please give the Macular Society helpline a call on 0300 30 30 111 (9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday).

Best wishes
