Just when you think everything is going ok, the doc phones and says my blood is showing I have low potassium now. Been advised to eat tomatoes and kiwi fruit, both which I hate but have been eating bananas and oranges which I can cope with!

Anyone suffering from low potassium?
hi Lucyloo i suffer from low potassium are you on nigh dose steroids at the moment because they can make you drop you potassium levels,& increase sodium my rheumatologist said, also ventolin inhalers used excessively can do the same, so if you have asthma make sure its controlled well..
if you have loose bowels or vomiting they can drop your potassium. a lot of people i know with SLE have the odd blip,
unfortunatly i have chronic low potassium due to faulty renal tube problem and am on supliments but its not related to the sle apparently and very rare.
orange juice, chocolate, figs and plums are all good sources. if you do get a stomach upset the dyoralite rehydration fluids replaces sodium and potassium.
i love the fact it is a good excuse to eat chocolate but most GPs dont tell you this as its not the healthy option.
hope this info helps.
Thanks Tatty. I am on steroids at min tho down to 20mg from 60mg and also on mycophenolate too so maybe that has something to do with it. Also got kidney nephritis and on water tablets and read that cn cause problems too. Am a bit picky bout what I eat but will keep on with the fruit plus a bit of dark chocolate sound very good. Hope everything not too bad with you. Take care.

water tables can drop your potassium but the can add in a water tablet that helps you reabsorb the potassium if you keep struggling.
watch out my doc prescribed me potassium tablets, i said no so i was told i could eat bananas, BUT the doc i'm registered with tells me he is concerend about my sugar intake!
