Hello Lindsay

Never never never take hydroxy on an empty stomach. It is a very adidic compound and will tear you stomach to shreds. Take it with or immediately after food.

If you are taking it with food and still getting problems speak to your doctor.

Plaquenil and other anti- malarials MUST be taken with food and washed well down with water, even if the food is only yoghourt or some other milk based food item which will help line the stomach wall . This is especially important if there is any sign of esophagal motility difficulties which are associated with certain varieties of auto- immune connective tissue disease.

Get your doctor's opinion and do everything you can to keep taking the Plaquenil - it is a almost miracle medicine and those who really can't tolerate it are very unfortunate.

If you want to be sure the problem is due to Plaquenil (HCQ) you could always try reducing the dose or missing a few days to see if the reflux is any better. Please note this is not medical advice, just common sense based on extensive patient experience and knowledge. Reducing the dose or stopping for a few days will not do any great harm - the medicine stays in the blood stream for many weeks.

Anyway, you need to mention it to your doctor - it could be coincidental to your lupus problems. It would also make sense to look up reflux (GERD) and learn about it and how to reduce incidence in general - eating patterns and foods to avoid.. Reflux can be a sign of other non- lupus problems.

Good Luck

Hermione
