Astrazeneca vs Pfizer for Lupus Patients

Does anyone know what is the preferred covid vaccine for SLE Lupus patients will less harsh side effects? My GP suggested Astrazeneca because he has 'heard' of some neurological symptoms being experienced by some people who took Pfizer. My concern is that since Lupus patients clot easily Astrazeneca may not be the one of choice. Too, would an asprin regimen before taking the Astrazeneca be sufficient to prevent clotting? Am in between a rock and a hard place.

Personally, I’d go with Pfizer. I think mRNA is safer overall since it doesn’t use another viral vector. I am not your physician though. I agree that I’d worry about AZ and it’s, albeit low, propensity to incur clots in those with pre-existing conditions.

I am SLE with aPL, no APS. I got Moderna without issue.

Thank you responding so quickly. A concern also is that I am on Lyrica for nerve pains--don't want any additional neurological issues.

I have TONS of neuro problems. Dysautonomia, eye problems, vestibular problems, peripheral neuropathy. They are all at baseline. No worsening. On IVIG for this so I’m getting pounded by everyone’s COVID antibodies on a monthly basis.

Obviously this is my personal experience. Everyone is different.

Is moderna an option? It has the better stats efficacy wise.

I had Astra Zeneca both times, first one caused rise in temperature and lump in vaccine area which lasted several weeks, second one no issues at all. I’ve lupus sle, sjogrens with aps and several other things related to autoimmune. I take aspirin as well as hydroxychloroquine. I will be due a third vaccine soon and will take what ever is suggested. My daughter had Pfizer vaccines and had no issues, she has sjogrens, diabetes and coeliac. I guess you have to listen to what your consultant suggests and trust that he knows what is best for you. 💐

I have had two doses of AstraZeneca with no reaction beyond a sore patch on my arm for a couple of days and I am super sensitive and allergic to several medications. I think my third booster dose will be Pfizer.

Can you talk to your consultant? I have Lupus, APLS and TM and I had the Pfizer with no issues.

I’ve had three shots of the Pfizer vaccine with little side effects (second and third shots were a breeze). I have SLE, Sjogrens, HypoT and seropositive APS.

I recommend you ask your doctor about what is best for you.

You are right we do not know the long term effects of the vaccine but we do know Hydro and Ivermectin do not work against Covid 19.

Re AZ

nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/N...

may be worth a read beforehand.

I had a bad reaction to AZ starting day 9 - headache on bending over and lying down, and shortness of breathe on exertion. This was before there were accounts on the news.

I took aspirin, although others may have persuaded me not to, and was okay...

I don't know anyone else personally who had an issue. Everyone I know has been doubled jabbed and is fine. I think the jabs have been good...GPs get back if patients are worried after having the jab. Twice I had phone calls the day I mentioned a particular symptom.

I had covid a year earlier, then long covid, and I've been aware since my blood clots much more easily and patterns of bruising are different. I wish I could get tested for antibodies to heparin / platelet factor 4 antibodies...

My problem may have been because I had covid a year earlier - as same thing might happen when have the actual infection.

As I am 80yrs , I am due for the booster any day soon. Having had lupus for years , lots of difficult symptoms to cope with typical of SLE , and on hydroxochloroquine for 14 yrs,

I am eager to have third jab . Whatever they are offering locally. Previously two AZ.

Hi ....I asked my consultant which one , she said anyI asked my GP because I am super sensitive to most meds and she said AZ

I have had both jabs , been ok , and my choice for the booster is AZ again ,which I will again speak to my GP for her guidance

My other half after 3 heart attacks, stroke which left him blind , diabetic , and many stents , and a bypass had both doses of AZ , he was absolutely fine , and will choose the AZ again and on 22 tabs a day as well !!!!

Everyones body is different so you just have to evaluate what is best for you after speaking to your GP and go with your instinct.

Hope that helps

Oh dear, did you see Trump taking Hydroxychloroquine last year and believe that was the answer? (There was then a shortage of those pills for lupus patients as a result) It was then proved that hydroxychloroquine had no significant effect and they became widely available again for those that needed them . Perhaps you spend too much time on the internet looking for so-called "data" to back up your dangerous ideas? We do not know the long-term effects of hundreds of different medications but that cannot and does not stop people using them in an effort to combat whatever disease or illness they have. That is how science and medicine works! You should be sensible and listen to what your GP or consultant advises you, not waste time trawling the internet for "arguments" to justify your own personal prejudices.

I have Lupus and ME and have had both doses of AstraZenica. I had no side effects on either doses. I would discuss with your doctor.
