Daughter just back from attending Boardmasters' festival in Cornwell. Apparently it has been a super spreader event (50,000 attended). Her carshare friend tested positive 2 days ago, the sample taken immediately after their journey back north.
Now we wait to see if my daughter turns positive. (So far 2 negative PCRs.) She came home full of cold, sneezing all over the house and refusing to wear a mask. "Mum it's just a cold. I've had 2 doses of vaccine."
I'm so cross that these festivals were happening before her age group had their 2nd jabs. She's only ahead of her friends because Paul posted at the end of March about those living with the clinically extremely vulnerable becoming eligible for a vaccine. I feel sorry for them because they believed it would be safe - proof of vaccines were needed or negative LFtests etc. They wanted to believe it would be safe because they'd had such a bad 18 months and felt they deserved it but will we now see families all over the UK reaping the price? There was no way she would have not gone with her friends because of me. No way. Sigh. Thanks for listening!

Hi Cathyan, what a nightmare for you. I am really sorry that you now have to bare the stress and uncertainty of your daughters decision. You must be worried for her and for yourself bless you. These large scale events are sheer madness in my opinion and I am certain there will be a significant increase in cases as a result. All we can do is keep ourselves as safe as possible xxx
Thank you CecilyParsley it’s such a relief to be understood. I love this forum. A double jabbed friend with Rheumatoid is day 11 of COVID right now and really struggling. She was admitted but is home now. Such a risk still for everyone in this community.

This is simply wrong!!!
Having two, three, four etc doses of the vaccine does NOT stop one from spreading this highly infectious delta variant of COVID-19 to others.
Younger people may well feel super protected but they can still give it to other more vulnerable people like lupus sufferers and other CEVs. This behaviour is selfish, self-centred and downright inconsiderate. Being young is ok but being carefree is definitely not ok.
Sorry for being blunt and direct but around 35,000 people testing positive for covid everyday in this country is truly scary. One has only got to look at Australia and see how they strictly shield. U.K. is far too complacent.
God help us all in this pandemic. I am not at all optimistic as Autumn approaches.
Thanks Ingrid. Our kids live with ill parents a lot of their childhoods (in my daughters case from the age of 6 months) so it’s not surprising they rebel and want to be like their friends and not have to think about the consequences for us from time to time. She didn’t want to admit she was a risk to me. I get that. She’s calmed down and acknowledged the situation and is being more sensible now, thankfully.
There are about 33,000 young people and children in the UK with long covid. No one seems alarmed that we are setting up an entire generation for long-term health problems.
Sarah Vine (I'm not a fan) wrote an article about this festival and said it was the equivalent of a chicken pox party where all the festival goers were coming home and testing positive. And she went on to say that she has no problem sending her son to the Reading festival.
I used to love going to festivals. I've lost count how many I attended in my previous life before SLE so I can understand why young people want to go. They feel immortal. But that doesnt help the CEV does it?
I’ve just read her article. Oh dear oh dear. But it seems to echo what some entitled complacent never ill friends of mine say. Thanks for posting and being understanding happytulip
I completely understand where you’re coming from! I am seeing more and more positive younger people in hospital, I am just in despair. Vaccine doesn’t stop you from getting Covid but is more likely to break the link from Covid to hospitalisation by preventing you being seriously ill. That said, those with autoimmune are struggling lots regardless (like your friend I saw you mention). I was very ill with Covid and now left with anxiety as a result. We went on the train the other day for a day out for my daughter’s birthday and the sheer overcrowding with people not wearing masks… I was on the train crying in to my husbands shoulder, I must have looked a state! So I really know how you feel. I went as I want my daughter to have a good time but I felt so on edge the whole time.
My husband tries to understand but still wants to take himself to football matches next week as he’s missed out on ‘too many’ so I’m not convinced he completely understands. To be honest, even if he just brings a cold home that’s more germs than I want in my body currently!
I digress but I wish you all the best and just wanted to say that I get it, I understand, is there any chance that your daughter will isolate from you in her room or something now she’s home? Or distance as much as possible, hand washing, anti-bac after using bathroom/kitchen etc?
I hope it all goes well and sending you big hugs, there’s a lot of us here who understand your concerns xx
I’m so sorry to hear of your experiences TeaandToast. It’s awful that public transport is not insisting on and enforcing masks. Sadly my friend has been readmitted and is on oxygen and IV everything (steroids antibiotics etc) Thanks for replying. Xx
I know a couple of lifeguards who attended the festival and both now have COVID. As you say these large gatherings are not good they just end up as events that are super spreaders.I live in a holiday destination and already our rate has gone from 125 to 352 on the scale. Our hospital has 9 cases and I know a nurse who works there and tells me it is all holidaymakers 😳
We have a few large festival events looming - which we normally attend, but not this year .. unfortunately folks hygiene at these events in ‘normal’ times leaves a lot to be desired. Have seen it first hand with folk urinating everywhere as an example. Unless one camps no food or drink can be taken into the events meaning one has to buy food etc on site.. mmmm another area where hygiene is questionable.
I’m not a kill joy by any stretch of the imagination and I love a good party etc. but I value my health more.
Have a lovely weekend everyone … in the fresh air away from the crowds 😉🤗
I understand how worried you must be. My son and his friends went clubbing in Newquay a few weeks ago despite my protests. 6 of the 13 contracted Covid, including his girlfriend. I banished him to his room in a complete panic and started mentally packing my hospital bag. Of the 6 the one with no jab was quite ill, 5 with one jab had 2 rough days. My double jabbed son managed not to catch it despite kissing his girlfriend when she thought she just had a cold the day before her positive test. He did daily LFT tests and 2 PCR's. We feel certain that being fully protected played a big part this and I hope that this turns out to be the case for you too.
Pcb31 I’m so pleased to hear how your son escaped it - for your sake, and because it’s giving my daughter and I hope! Thank goodness for Paul letting us know about household members’ vaccine eligibility at the end of March!
Just an add I know friends who do LFT one who did 4 work related , and to visit family CEV and also to attend festivals all showed negative. Also double vaccinated. Came back from festival feeling ok LFT negative then usual next day felt rough did LTF again negative, decided on going for PCR positive result thought something was wrong with said test results. Ended up in hospital for a few days Covid.
The warning was if you feel ill just get the PCR to confirm so many LFT are either not conducted properly or failing for what ever reason, even the nurses and doctors advised on noticing this happening at the hospital where they were treated.
No problem, it’s such a weird time, when I hear mutterings of another festival being mentioned by friends or younger family members, I can already feel a huge frown on my face!
My daughter’s latest PCR is negative. Hurrah, I think she’s escaped it as it’s 7 days since her last exposure to a positive testing friend. However my double jabbed friend with Rheumatoid is still on a COVID ward so it’s a horrible reminder of the risks and ongoing situations our community still faces. I didn’t appreciate the comments in a BBC article implying the infections amongst this age group weren’t really doing any harm bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-c...
