I’m at the end of my wit dealing with the council. I was moved into my council flat when the bedroom tax debacle happened and I had to leave my private tenancy. The new flat has a bath, not a walk in shower, which they said they could adapt. 8 years later still no walk in shower and I’m still falling out the bath despite a grab rail and bath board. An assessor is coming again tomorrow, my 3rd assessor!. I just don’t know how else to convince them I need a shower. Anyone had a success getting this done? Please give me guidance of what the hell they want to hear from me!
Thanks so much!

Thanks for your reply. You’re right, these things are best thought of in stages. Otherwise it just makes me very depressed. After finally winning my full pip at tribunal a year later I should know that by now. Thanks for your encouragement.

Had a wetroom fitted by council years ago. Was originally put in for my husband but my needs were taken into consideration as found it very difficult to get in and out of the bath. You need to over emphasize how difficult it is for you.
Hi Lily. You are entitled to a disabled facilities grant as you are a council tenant. Is your OT and GP supporting you in this? Letters from them would push things along. I cannot get in and out of the bath either but as we have a shower upstairs they would not consider us. Good luck I hope they sort things out for you quickly xx
I applied for a disabled facilities grant in 1991 and the council paid for an extension to be built onto my dining room, The idea being as I could no longer climb the stairs and a stair lift couldn't be fitted to my stairs as they were open plan and would not be safe that was the only option left. The extension was for a wet room with walk in shower, toilet & sink. After the extension was built I moved downstairs and My dining room became a bedroom with on-suite If I can remember rightly it cost £20,000. However since then things have become much more harder to get anything. I had to wait 3 and a half years on a waiting list just to get an electric wheelchair. I hope you get sorted out as it's so hard when you are struggling.
I was advised to make changes during an appointment with a hospital based occupational therapist a few years ago. I was referred from rheumatology, after telling the doctor there I was afraid to go out after struggling to manage severe sciatic pain, to OT and a physio.
I could get in my bath but couldn't get out, the pain was so bad. The OT suggested having a chair fitted to the bath to lower me in and out. I wasn't sure so she said how about having your bath taken out and a shower fitted. She organised it and a plumber arrived to make the changes. They not only took the bath out but replaced the loo and sink....long job as the guy worked by himself. An inspector came later to check on work and the electrical side of things.
To say I was gobsmacked is putting it mildly but it was best thing I've had done. I've never had a lot of help during my 74 years, I was so grateful. I could finally wash safely, they brought a white plastic chair with the shower pack, laid a new floor...job lot. Can you speak to your gp, see if they can help through her. Did you get a medical referral for the shower???
